Ironically and surprisingly, between 2018-2020 and then sharply in 2023, the Liberal government lowered the deficit, which is something that's only happened 5-6 times since 1962.

Us? Canada doesn't actually have high taxes - we rank 20th out of 38 OECD countries (basically the developed world). There are other groups that measure this and generally we're midpack in most cases and that's largely reflected in how big our social safety net is relative to other countries (like we pretty much deliver what's expected - it's not really being wasted).

We also generally are pretty stable in our tax to GDP ratio regardless of who is in power - there are not wild swings due to political party, it's more related to economic conditions so it's not like Cons are better than Libs at being frugal (it's basically a wash).

$10/day child care is a program with good intentions, but it's not perfect. We should encourage people to have children in Canada, rather than relying on immigration to replace our working age population.

I know some here want to burn it all down and remove all safety nets, but no one is campaigning on getting rid of the CPP, OAS, EI, or publicly-funded health care. We need young people to pay for these.

What I can't understand is that there are people who don't support programs like $10/day daycare and at the same time complain about immigration and the wrong types of immigrants.

$10 daycare is a program with good intentions, but just like everything else that Turd touches, it has turned subsidized daycare into an unsustainable POS. Signing onto the program binds the childcare center into an agreement where they cannot raise prices on the parents, but with operating costs constantly rising, childcare centers are actually losing money because they can't get enough revenue -- fee hikes on the parents are prohibited, and gov funding doesn't increase (or doesn't increase at a rate that can keep pace with escalating operating costs).

The gov funding also goes through a pay-first, reimburse-later model, so operators are forced to front all the costs first. But I've read that reimbursements regularly takes anywhere between 1 - 3 months, so owners are taking on large amounts of debt (and paying interest on them!) and that is just not sustainable. It also goes to reinforce how the Lib-Turd gov is hugely bloated and yet still extremely inefficient.

Many daycare centers are actually losing money as a result. Some are forced to closed down bcos the business model just isn't sustainable anymore, resulting in even fewer childcare spaces than before Turd's progam came in. Others are hanging on the best they can (while losing money / taking on additional debt) in the hopes that more funding will come.

So fxxk Turd, the Libs, and Carney. I'm moving to Portugal when I retire, but for now, I'll stay in Canada bcos I don't need to send any of my own hellspawns to these places anyway.

(Wait... is that last line more of a Badhobz thing than Honda?)

I don't actually know how extensive the above problems are, but from following the news and such, I know all of the above are real, actual problems that have occurred. News of childcare centers closing down bcos of insufficient funding from the program have at least popped up in Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton, and Calgary. A quick google search will dig up lots of examples, such as this Macleans story:

Wouldn't Honda just say that if you can't afford childcare then you shouldn't have children and that you're a stupid loser that's leeching from the gov't and you only have yourself to blame for getting into that predicament?

Honda would definitely complain that if you can't afford daycare you should just cut your balls and cock off

He'd then complain how we're turning into Japan and our how our taxes are too high paying for an aging demographic with no one replacing them.

I wonder if the end game for this stuff is that the majority (70-80%) of daycares are gov't owned and operated with a small number being the home operated ones and some private ones that are a bit bougie and specialized with the latter two getting a fixed subsidy but the bougie ones are allowed to charge whatever the market is willing to pay.

I think this sorta bridges the gap between the current world and what it's like in some of the European countries where it's all gov't operated.

I'd prefer a more consistent daycare experience for all income levels - I'm sometimes surprised at what I see at different daycares in terms of the quality of the space, some of them seem like real trash and aren't anything I'd let my kid be around. Parents shouldn't have to be desperate to find care and feel like their kids aren't getting an equal shot at life based on where they live and how much money they make.

My youngest daycare just turned into $10/daycare in May. Too bad we were only able to take advantage of it for 4 months, but better than nothing!

I feel like VLAD needs to get laid, and I'm still waiting for she/he to post their pic.

We need gender confirmation here, I want to understand what kind of a person would lie about their gender on a forum full of dudes, it's Jason level weirdness.

Dukes hurry up and do your little link up.

This has been getting very little coverage - Ken Sim and his team repeatedly broke the law in holding private meetings to discuss council business. When called on it Sim just ignores it - this has been pretty consistent with how Sim has conducted himself throughout his term as Mayor.

Quote:
Vancouver just received the kind of report no city should be proud of.

Its Integrity Commissioner has found that Mayor Ken Sim and (what were then) his seven ABC Vancouver Party councillors repeatedly breached the Vancouver Charter’s most basic requirement: that the people’s business must be done in the open. (One councillor, Rebecca Bligh, has since been ousted from the party.)

This isn’t about arcane law. Section 165.1 of the Charter is the very foundation of municipal legitimacy. It requires council to meet publicly, save for a few narrow exceptions. The idea is simple: decisions must be debated and shaped where citizens can watch, weigh in, and hold elected representatives to account.

The Commissioner’s report released Monday lays bare that this principle was treated as an inconvenience by the mayor and his team. Draft amendments to important policies—the Climate Justice Charter, Moberly Park funding—were worked out in private. Regular caucus meetings in the mayor’s office, conducted with a quorum, discussed council business in ways that moved decisions forward. Chats on the Signal app and personal email chains served as unrecorded, auto-deleting channels to hash out motions before they ever saw daylight.

The defence? That these were merely caucus discussions, not formal council meetings. That no votes were taken, so no harm done. That party politics at the municipal level give cover for the same kind of private strategy sessions common in Ottawa or Victoria.

...

Who voted for Sim? The guy has no charisma, is incredibly unlikable in every public interaction, and didn’t seem to have any sort of beneficial platform for anyone other than cops and developers. Did no one vote because the muni elections are just overlooked?

People hated Gregor and Kennedy Stewart so much that they were willing to vote for a guy exhibited macho vibes in the same way that Trump was seen as a masculine person.

I thought Stewart was a pretty bad mayor but Sim takes the cake as the worst one of the last 50 years by a mile.

Here's Ken being a man's man by shotgunning a beer:

Here's him showing Trudeau who's boss by wearing jeans and a hoodie to meet with him:

And here's Ken Sim signalling to our veterans that they're losers for dying for our country by wearing a puffy jacket and white sneakers on Remembrance Day:

Sim has been one of the worst mayors this city has ever seen, don't even get me started on his crypto bullshit as well.

I believe the voter turnout was somewhere in the low 30s in 2022, I fully believe this asshole will be voted out soundly next election.

I see the principle behind the law, but it's pretty hard to prevent this in high level boards or councils. SO much of the work is actually done beforehand (eg. words of motions, budget, etc.). The official business time is to rubber stamp things and really to vote.

Aren't the majority of the council part of ABC, Sim's party, I mean how do you prevent them from having an ABC party meeting and discussing strategy & things?

Like most things, the huge Chinese population voted for him based purely on his race. I know my parents did. Better to have a fellow Ching Chong than some guy who has a platform you actually agree with. Fuck the policies.

That being said why is it the Vancouver mayor gets all the attention. Who gives a shit. I don’t even know who the mayor of Burnaby or north van is…. Hell I don’t even know who the mayor of Richmond is….. malcom in the middle or something ?

Knowing absolutely nothing about this guy, I'd say thumbs up to the first picture (fuck wearing a suit for anyone) but thumbs down for the second (...except when honoring veterans)
