Easiest and simplest way is give money to everyone like HK and US.

That's what the NDP wants.

Hondaracer 04-08-2020 07:47 AM

People are going to scam tf out of it

Frankly I’m tempted to apply and just see what happens even though gainfully employed. Same people who are going to be getting this are the same ones already scamming EI, double dipping on benefits, etc.

MG1 04-08-2020 07:51 AM

Well, none of this is coming my way, damn it!

Oh well, I guess I'll keep paying the taxes like a good little boy.

At least I'm getting a refund this year.

I just hate the fact my tax dollars are going to fucking scammers and dishonest people. Paying to help those in need, I don't mind at all.

Except US isn’t giving an amount that matters to anyone. What would a one time payment of $1200 do to mitigate people’s financial issues after job loss?

That's $1200 per adult, plus $500 per child.
In a household of two parents plus one child, That's almost $3k.

It can cover the necessities.
A blanket payment is meant for accessibility and speed.
The more regulations and processing there is, the longer it takes to get to people's hands.
The sacrifice is, some people are not going to get as much as they would have with a more regulated system, and some may get more.

Mr.HappySilp 04-08-2020 08:11 AM

^^ something is better than nothing. HK is giving people like 10k HK dollars which is more or less 2k Canada. And that's a one time payment as well.

320icar 04-08-2020 08:17 AM

Stick to EI, and have a system to help self employed people.

So many lazy people are going to take advantage of this it’s insane. They cannot just give 2k to *everyone* who isn’t working. That’s fucked

Oldest trick in the book when you can't dispute the facts then attempt to defame the source. Too bad that only works in a libtard world.

I'm assuming all these payments are coming tax free?

correct me if i'm wrong but isn't EI supposed to be taxes?

if these payments are tax free then fuck ya I'm going to apply....it's my tax money going out, why shouldn't i get it too

US system is far ahead of what Trudeau/Horgan announced (and rightfully so)...CERB vs COVID stimulus checks alone we're getting about 1/3 of our US counterpart per capita... 3400usd for the average family on top of their EI that's extended to more people and boosted by 600usd/wk

the CERB 360usd/wk excludes essential workers/students & new grads

BC emerg benefit for workers 700usd but sign up for our email to get more updates!

BC rental assistance 'will post eligibility in a day or 2' since a week ago

Prices for an additive used to clean fish tanks have skyrocketed after studies found the pharmaceutical drug version of it may treat the coronavirus, a report said.

Chloroquine phosphate is used to in aquariums to kill some organisms, like algae, that may harm fish.

Sellers on eBay and other websites hiked prices in March, and buyers were willing to shell out large amounts of cash for the substance, Storyful found. The listings indicated that the product wasn’t meant for human consumption.

Between Feb. 25 and March 2, the price paid for a single 25-gram bottle of chloroquine phosphate rose from $9.99 to over $500.

On March 18, eBay’s tracking indicated that one seller had sold 84 lots of the substance in 24 hours. By that afternoon, all sizes were sold out save for 100 gram lots, which were being listed for $519 each.

The anti-malarial drug chloroquine, and a derivative of it called hydroxychloroquine, have been found effective in killing the virus in laboratory experiments, according to some recent studies.

But the drug hasn’t yet been approved in treating COVID-19.

There's no doubt some are. I'm already reading it on reddit finance forums.

But it's not hard for CRA to track it down and cross reference things. Yeah, some will fall through the cracks but many will get caught and penalized.

I've never been audited, but I think the last branch I want to f with is the CRA.

Yup! for anyone on Mat leave you always get a nice surprise when it's time to do taxes. Hey remember all those EI payments you got that basically came with no tax deducted, well not you owe us thousands of dollars thanks!

And in a household of two Canadians and no working children it’s 4K a month. They will have the money in 3 days of application, which from what I’ve heard is taking people minutes.
That can also cover the necessities. I fail to see how the US system is better than ours.
The difference with ours is that it will remain accessible for a longer period of time so there is a safety net for what we hope is the entire duration of the extreme points of this situation.

also if you have children i believe the new child care benefit is about an extra $300 per child.

^ covid stimulus check in the US is on top of unemployment insurance for those who qualify...and for all families under 150k usd annual income

cerb replaces ei and isn't as universal

This was a loop hole gov't realized; you could work 1 hr at starbucks, get an RoE and then say you earned $4900 from "consulting" with a newly established company (less than a yr).
1) has to be 5000 with RoE in year 2019
2) company stimulus package has to be company that's more than 2 yrs in business (last i checked on BDC who's distributing the funds)

Again, for one month.
I’m not saying what the US is doing is wrong, I’m just saying it’s not some undeniably better approach just because orange man always right and Trudeau always wrong in the eyes of some of the people in this thread.

It's just funny because the US package is precisely the ubi system that many here had been so in favor of in the past.
It's a supplementary, no questions asked cheque.
No application. No processing involved. It's being automatically sent through tax records.

westopher 04-08-2020 10:18 AM

UBI would probably be more than a one time cheque in times of disaster. Again, I’m glad it’s happening so the irony is lost here.
