BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Mounties in Burnaby are urging you to check on your loved ones during this heatwave, after dozens of sudden deaths that are believed to be linked to heat.

RCMP say in a 24-hour period since Monday, officers responded to more than 25 sudden deaths. Investigators believe heat was a contributing factor in the majority of the deaths.

Many of those who died were seniors.

“We are seeing this weather can be deadly for vulnerable members of our community, especially the elderly and those with underlying health issues. It is imperative we check on one another during this extreme heat,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

A person died in my building(langley). They were found this morning by contractors who are re-piping our building and have the keys to go in each apt to work.

Bestbuy, couldn't find any significant deals. Costco doesn't carry this specific model, nor does bed bath beyond with their coupon. At this rate just getting it rather than regretting it later. Worked out for my AC!

This is tactless and vuglar on several levels.

If someone close to you died from the heat or COVID, you wouldn’t be making such a comment.

Hondaracer 06-29-2021 09:56 PM

Actually knew 5-6 people who died of covid. Likely would have died as the result of any other respiratory disease.

the heat getting to you guys? Gotta chill bros

Then, when the rains come, all the oils and fluids that accumulated in the asphalt over the hot dry weather will come up and make the roads super slick, causing accidents.

I replied to another one of your posts that was along the same lines. I posted it, then thought about it long and hard. I ended up deleting it, because there's nothing worse than starting an exchange that doesn't solve anything. Bad feelings and whatnot.

Anyway, for some reason, I saved it.

Spoiler!

I've said stupid things before myself on RS. I hope when I got called out, I admitted to everyone that it was a dumb thing to say. Maybe even <gulp> apologize. Maybe the heat, covid, and last week's full moon is getting to me.

Not surprised you do seeing your political leanings. I guess they thought covid was a hoax.

Holy Hanna Montana, it's actually cold outside with this wind. The "heat dome" has lifted! Well, sort of.

Look up the term. It's what's been happening around these parts.

fliptuner 06-30-2021 12:21 AM

Yup. Shut off the AC's and just having windows open. Nice, breeze blowing through the house.

It'll be nice to work outside and get some fresh air, after hunkering down in the AC for the last few days.

StylinRed 06-30-2021 01:42 AM

I didn't realise it was still hot in the rest of BC, Lytton had hit 49.6°c! Omg

MG1 06-30-2021 04:11 AM

We are fortunate to be next to the ocean. A friend of mine lives in Lytton. Literally a cabin in the woods. Lytton and Osoyoos are like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Shohei Ohtani. Neck and neck for the title of the hottest place in BC. Another stinking hot place is Ashcroft. I remember racing up in Ashcroft (Eagle Motorplex) one year and it was dirty hot. Dusty as fuck. Very uncomfortable. Like most desert places, however, low humidity, so not as bad as it was here recently.

I didn't know how low the elevation was in Lytton. 630 feet. 49.6ºC. So close to the 50......... c'mon, Lytton. You can do it.

What? Dude, you're like one of the hardest working people I know. You took a day off? Son, I'm disappoint.

Felt like Nick Cage walking off the plane in Con Air when I opened my front door this morning, this is more like it.

ImportPsycho 06-30-2021 08:13 AM

Quick, everyone go buy all portable heaters!
I expect demand to sky rocket, we can flip them for easy money!

mikemhg 06-30-2021 08:24 AM

It's crazy how after that heat, 22C in the morning is totally comfortable, if not cool :lol

We're heading out to Penticton for the week today, 40 degrees, and 37 for the week. Yikes.

Euro7r 06-30-2021 08:36 AM

Feels so good last night and today (that nice cool breeze). Left all my windows open, had a good nights sleep. 20-25 degrees is the right temperature for me, anything higher is too hot just makes day to day work uncomfortable (sitting at the desk at home and sweating while typing away for work - keyboard/mouse is sticky LOL).

hud 91gt 06-30-2021 08:53 AM

Sold my Old AC last night, planned on buying a new one (ordering). Sadly that doesn’t even look like an option. Haha. Oops

Was in Penticton 2 weekends ago when it was 30/32 and Jesus Christ..waiting on the pavement for a seat on a patio, direct sun, no shade, legit felt like I was dying slowly

More sad news:

Vancouver Police
@VancouverPD

We’re saddened to see the toll the heatwave has taken on the community. 53 sudden deaths were reported to VPD on Tuesday. Since Friday, police in Vancouver have responded to 98 sudden deaths. 2/3 of the victims are 70 years or older. #BCHeatWave

"The public was acutely aware that we had a heat problem," Horgan said. "And we were doing our best to break through all of the other noise to encourage people to take steps to protect themselves."
The premier said he was waiting for further details on the recent deaths from the provincial coroner adding, "fatalities are a part of life" and that the causes of them "are examined by officials."
He also emphasized there was a "level of personal responsibility" for residents to look after themselves and each other.

Did he expect the 90+ year old seniors to check their iPhones and TV about the heat wave alert?

When we called our father in law's (He's in his late 70's) home last Wednesday, he was not aware of the potential heat wave.

westopher 06-30-2021 12:21 PM

They should have just hopped on FB marketplace and bought the 300% markup AC flips.

I dunno. All the elderly people I know watch the news or listen to the radio like gospel.
