Portugal is exotic? It's been like the trendiest destination in Europe for the past 5 years so much so the digital nomads living there have ruined the place and are getting pushback from locals.
Sadly no, just a down to earth China-Mutt woman. I dragged her backpacking around SE Asia and the Middle East for 6 months a decade and a half ago in the guise of Cultural Enrichment staying in hostels and various hovels. Now she's like 4*+ or fuck yourself.
Last year we sprung for some overwater bungalow in the Maldives, Broadway shows in NYC. Ireland was expensive AF too. This time we get to go somewhere cheap and backpacker-ish to even it out again.
Not unique to Portugal, had this for the first time in Paris years ago

Lol no I'm nowhere near you rich Chinese fucks. I just spend recklessly on things that don't matter except to me. I have no assets besides financial ones and my shoebox condo. I intend to die with zero.
Plus you'd be surprised how affordable some overwater bungalows are in Maldives, I mean they're not cheap and you can certainly go super luxurious and spend your monthly salary per night. But you can have a pretty nice experience for say, 1K/night.

prease prease brother, no need to be so humbro.
if youre going to maldives and other buttfuck nowhere countries for lawls, youre doing really well. i dont even know how you have so much time off.. i got like 4 weeks of vacation but i never end up taking it all. always roll it over and then get paid out. my schedule never seems to align with the wife schedule. surprisingly considering she doesnt work.

Sure, well off enough, but certainly not McMansion and a wife that doesn't work well off lol.
No I totally get it, people that don't travel to these far flung locations don't realize how affordable it can be sometimes. It's like it's just one time expense probably I can stop anytime I want, I swear anytime!!
I get 4 weeks off too! 2 weeks somewhere and 2 weeks somewhere else! 'cept I usually have to align with my Wife's holiday schedule though lol

How much did ya'll spend per night on the Maldives bungalows? $1-2K?
It's high on my bucket list, that and Bora Bora.

Worked out to be like $1K/night in CAD. But that's only part of the story, you still have to pay to get there from the airport which can cost up another $500-800 depending on if you want to take a speedboat or seaplane. We did one each way. My advice? Do the seaplane both ways.
For that price you get probably a 4* accommodation equivalent in a first world country. But you're really paying for the isolation, even though you're surrounded by other bungalows it feels like you're alone in the middle of nowhere:
You should totally do it Mike and soon, I looked into Bora Bora as well but it looks like it's at the very least 2-3x as expensive since thre's fewer resorts, is a nicer island and you're technically in France.

I told my midget I’d take her one of these days but instead I cheaped out and started looking at one of these little islands in Fiji that also has bungalows over the water…. They are like half the price of the Maldives…. And similar experience ? I don’t know.
Flips also have these bungalows

lol as if money is object to you. Just steal one of your wife's bags and sell it to finance it if you don't want to take a bite from your budget.
The thing with The Maldives over the others is that it's really in the middle of fucking nowhere. The islands are all volcanic atolls, so your bungalow is built right up to the coral reef. The water is clear as a bottle of Evian and there's sea life all over the place. I could stand outside with no snorkeling gear in 3 ft deep of water and I'm surrounded by half a dozen nurse sharks, nemos, and a shit ton of other fish.
