I just get the cheapest CA/US plan as I cross often. And for anything outside, I buy an eSIM before I leave.

I upgraded to the Rogers variant of this plan because I'm in Asia for a few months and needed SMS MFA (unfortunately some services I need still have SMS authentication). Price is a bit steeper than my previous plan, but I enjoy not having to worry about sim swapping or paying $15 every time i need to receive 1 SMS.

Saw this on Marketplace. All I could think of was this scenario:

You're with a girl and she's wearing nothing but this helmet. As your filling her Sahara with your oasis, You can read her *moans* and 'daddy fuck good' scroll messages rather than hearing them.

Genius!

This is gold and worthy of a thousand thanks!

Receiving SMS while roaming is free. Responding triggers roaming package/charges.

You're right - I realize my earlier post was misleading. I used to have no issues avoiding roaming charges when receiving SMS abroad, but since Roam Like Home was introduced I sometimes get charged the full $15. This happens even if I don’t reply SMS, place calls, or use data (to my knowledge - which I’ve already turned off in settings).

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I no longer need to worry now with the new plan.

I drove thru walley today, the level on meth has increased, serious crack swagg going on

You're right. I've argued this with TELUS countless times, they've indicated that receiving an SMS text, can trigger Roam Like Home.

This is fucking annoying because the first text is ALWAYS from TELUS when I land abroad, which triggers the daily roam fee.

Their answer is "put your phone in airplane mode then".

Fuck off, I shouldn't have to be in airplane mode to avoid you arseholes texting me about buying travel insurance the minute I land somewhere. It's all scammy in my opinion, the standard roam text fee is always cheaper than the $15 Roam Like Home charge they levy.

I'd prefer the thing turned off entirely, which seems impossible to get done.

Yea shit like banking with two factor authentication is super annoying

I managed to only get charged 1 day on my most recent trip because I needed to receive a text and had to switch from my travel e sim back to Telus e sim, the thing is though is so sketch swapping back and forth because typically Telus will want to connect to a different carrier than the e sim is using. So now you’re fucking around in the settings ensuring data etc. is off on your regular Telus sim, turn it back on to get the SMS, then quickly jump back to the travel sim for the data to login to banking etc.

I’m almost certain I got charged for the momentary blip of cellular data switching over to my regular sim even though I had it disabled the entire time but didn’t feel like spending 3 hours on the phone to fight over $15

mikemhg 08-25-2025 09:46 AM

^Dude banking is the WORST too for the two factor.

Same thing, my carrier always gets that piece of flesh on that crap as well, you're lucky you only got dinged once.

I got dinged 3 times my last trip to Greece because Vancity makes you re-authenticate at a whim, numerous times. I ended up just changing my two factor number to my work cell, make them pay for this fuckery :lol

You're speaking my travel anger language here.

Driving home last night on highway 1 in the HOV lane and some guy in a Civic decides to pass me on the left curb lane. I was doing about 110 so figure he was doing 130 or so. Don't mind the incorrect time stamp or my lens cover getting in the way.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1xwC...ew?usp=sharing

I can barely make out the license plate - not sure it'd be accurate, if I can do I report it?

westopher 08-25-2025 10:50 AM

Not going to accomplish anything anyway unfortunately.

Badhobz 08-25-2025 12:01 PM

https://ocre-sielc.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/burnaby/en

There is an online reporting form for the RCMP, report it based on the jurisdiction the incident happened.

They will need a license plate to do anything about it though.

I had an incident and I submitted it via this form for Coquitlam RCMP, they said they issued a warning to the owner of the vehicle. I dont know what form the warning was in, though.

Its probably data. It's almost always the data. Your carrier messages are zero rated. The received SMS doesn't trigger charges.

Even when you have data roaming off, the phones are still sending a trickle of data through, to Apple/Samsung/Google. It's a hardware issue. (Fuck you Apple.)

There are indicators to tell what triggers the roaming, but since all the Canadian Frontline customer service agents are gone, I doubt many of the fresh overseas agents know how to look.

Ideally you leave the Telus esim active, just leave data roaming off, and have the travel esim active at the same time for the data. I did this for a month this year across 3 countries in Asia without any roaming charges.

Lower taxes!
Get rid of the deficit!
More public services!
My brothers in Christ you can literally only have one of those. Choose wisely, you’re lucky to even get one these days.

There is a solution. I was a cheapo once and used Freedom and didn't allow international text so I cant' access my bank account during covid in HK.

Solution is to get the TD authenticating app so you don't need the text...
