Ah man, I just had my contract rug pulled as well by those pussies in Brussels.

The company I contract with was about to take our EUDR project live (Anti-deforestation) having spent seven digits in euros on it. But one month before it becomes law the EU caved and postponed the requirement a year.. but with hints they may scrap it in April.

I love the EU, and I thought this flawed but decent legislation was going to do some good environmentally. Hopefully this program doesn't die but ugh. What a waste of time and money. 18 months of work shelved.

Hit 2 spots today that RS folks highly recommend. Here are my reviews, remember, my standards are quite low.

1. Cream Peony in North Shore - unassuming place, close to Lonsdale Quay, you could miss it easily, entrance is in a lane. Decent donuts, had their cruffin whatever, it was good but kinda surprised how small the selection of donuts were - cheese dip, chicken feet, Christmas peony, etc. The rest in their display looked like typical icing on top donuts which is meh. P.S. the reflection glass countertop is not me, it's the lady behind the counter ... :lol.

2. Between 2 Buns, risked my life to stop by Chinatown but was close to the area, wasn't even opened when I arrived as they open at 4:00 pm. I'm not going to make a big deal about the price difference, burger alone was $12.75, fries were $5.50 = $18.25 price point ... not really in the same price category as my fave place. Burger was good, you understand why it gets high reviews but I think it is literally, 'the secret sauce', at the end, it was a hot mess with more sauce than burger. Not bad, comparable, but for me, I rather eat in peace (SaveOn, Park & Tilford, North Shore) without having to have my head on a swivel, to find this burger joint. If I am in Chinatown, might as well just pop into New Town Bakery and fill myself up with one or two of their buns.

Sorry about the layoff Evo. I dealt with it earlier this year with a different big tech company. It's not my first time out of a job, but this time I didn't prioritize the daily LinkedIn grind. Instead I spend a lot more time reconnecting with my professional network to see what's new. I found much more success than throwing my resume into a hat and praying for results. Nowadays AI resumes make everyone look amazing on paper, but getting a human referral will let you skip the line. Good luck.

Yeah I'm trying to pull connections as much as I can, but there's only so many connections to pull and jobs to go around

I've been applying for the last few months as Amazon has been hugely unstable and I was already unsure for extension in March. So far all the cold applications or reach outs have resulted in nothing. Referrals and recruiters have gotten me cups of coffee here and there but nothing has materialized.

I'm not sure where you work but it's very hard as there are in influx of AMZ applications flying everywhere.

In the IT industry at least in the GTA, many are reluctant to hire AMZ staff - even if it's an entry level jobs cause there are tons, but because AMZ is so unique, if they hire someone who has only worked on AMZ software, they have a tough learning curve to use any other software.

The team lead also had a tough time getting previous AMZ reps to learn to read trends / forecast without software reminding him / her to place an order.

My work history is very varied. I've been with Amazon for just under 3 years out of a 13 year career. There are certain things they do very well, there are certain processes that are absolutely batshit insane and honestly I can see why some one might not want to hire an AMZ lifer.

The amount of AI garbage on LinkedIn makes me pray that asteroid comes sooner...

I got laid off back in January of this year. It was the biggest gut punch, especially because it was a sneaky blindside. I had worked there 5 years and really loved it.

The worst part was that you don't get to leave on your own terms and you don't get to say goodbye to people. And then BOOM suddenly all those people you worked with daily who you thought were friends DGAF about you anymore. I was so sad and so angry at the same time.

Plus looking for work is the worst. Putting yourself out there. Applying and hearing nothing. Or you hear something, and then wait and wait and wait and wait. Sooo much waiting. And then get told no. Fuck that.

I ended up starting my own company. It's scary and exciting at once. Never been more stressed in my life than I am now. It is costing me a fortune and there's no revenue yet. But honestly, I'm a lot happier doing exactly what I want to be doing, setting my own job description, and ngl it's nice to call yourself a founder and be the big boss.

My wife's been very supportive. But our finances are kind of fucked right now. We're living paycheque to paycheque with full austerity measures. Gonna be a lean xmas this year.

^Good for you brother. Takes massive balls to do that.

pastarocket 12-05-2025 12:23 PM

Are Netflix subscription fees going up soon? :considered:

https://www.cnn.com/2025/12/05/media...al-warner-bros

Netflix has triumphed in the bidding war for Warner Bros. and HBO, announcing a deal that could combine two of the three biggest streamers with one of the largest traditional movie and television studios.

If the deal goes through, it will fundamentally reshape Hollywood at a precarious time for the entertainment business. It would give Netflix control of some of the industry’s most valuable intellectual property, including Batman, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, and would give a company that historically had very little interest in movie theaters oversight of the studio that put more butts in seats than any other this year.

But first it will be subjected to intense regulatory review in the US and other countries.

Netflix announced the blockbuster deal with Warner Bros. Discovery on Friday morning. It has agreed to buy the legendary TV and movie studio and assets like the HBO Max streaming service for $72 billion, plus debt.

Sooo scmp (an HK outfit) just wrote an article that has this interesting picture.

Makes Guangdong bastards look like a bunch of retards.

The fuck ?! Why do this.

Traum 12-05-2025 02:08 PM

I dunno about the other regions, but southeastern Chinese folks (ie. those Guangdong bastards, as Badhobz puts it) don't even look like that.

I wonder how SCMP even came up with this garbage picture.

Badhobz 12-05-2025 02:22 PM

I mean some of you bastards do look like that but the same type of guy can be found in all provinces. Weird thing for scmp to write up

SkinnyPupp 12-05-2025 02:26 PM

SCMP is garbage that's why

donk. 12-05-2025 02:45 PM

Corporate monopolization of the arts is nothing new, however it's so brazen now, Truly disgusting that this valuation even exists from a company that started with DVD rentals and just makes cringe-slop with script-by-numbers productions that pander to the eternal couch slob. Eventually Amazon and Netflix will own everything. Can't wait for that dystopia...

Embrace the indie arts. Your money can actually go somewhere meaningful.

sorry to hear that. back in my mid-late 20's i was laid off in tech as well and i took it as an opportunity to switch industries as it was during the recession of the last 2000's and i saw the writing on the wall. luckily due to my age/experience it was a good time to do it.

hopefully you'll be able to pivot/bounce back, take advantage of EI/be in a position to strategically chart your next steps.

It's just part of the industry, this is the 4th time

It had never been personal, just wrong place at the wrong time, and to be fair, most places are the wrong place in the last 2 years.
