yah, ranj was a top dogg. Lot of the cocaine that came up here had something to do with him in one way or another but the life definitely caught up... live by the gun, die by the gun

South Vancouver has produced so many gangsters from years past that I've lost count how many of them are dead, in jail or on the run. And most of these gangsters who got killed or fled weren't balling out of control, they made what anyone with a normal job would have made in a year so was it worth the lifestyle? Nope.

exactly, the problem is they likely get caught up when they're younger where that money seems inconceivable because all they really know about a job is working at mcdonalds so they're sucked in and they end up getting stuck

Same block Ujjal lives on and the guy the cops were trying to protect was killed a few years back, he was one of the founders of sunset boys now known as "IS", his other brother was killed in an car accident like a year later and the other brother's gf committed suicide by jumping off the knight st bridge.

Man dead after shooting at Port Moody rec centre
Neighbours say gunfire sounded like fireworks
News1130 Staff May 31, 2012 06:03:18 AM
PORT MOODY (NEWS1130) - A 35-year-old man has been killed in Port Moody.
He was shot while standing in the parking lot of a rec centre on Ioco Road. Several shots rang out before 10 o'clock last night.
Katie lives nearby and says it's usually a quiet area. "It was a very quick sequence of shots, very fast. It sounded like fireworks."
A group of men were playing soccer on a nearby field when it happened. One tells us he tells us about nine shots. "Six in succession and then three delays. It sounded exactly like a standardized handgun. It sent silent and all of a sudden, we started hearing sirens."
He adds it was a little scary to wait for information as officers, some carrying large rifles, spread out around the building.
Dozens of people using the rec centre were stuck there for several hours as they waited to retrieve their cars from behind police tape.
The case has been handed over to the Vancouver Police homicide unit.

I am going to assume a regular 9 mm or similar caliber handgun.
A 22 caliber pistol is alot quieter than a 9 mm and a .44/.50 caliber is going to be way louder.
Last time at DVC, from outside, the .50 sounded like a boom more than a bang.

update
A Duhre associate named Gurbinder “Bin” Toor is the victim of the fatal shooting at the Port Moody Rec Centre Wednesday evening.
He was getting out of his vehicle in the rec centre parking lot to play ball hockey - a sport at which he excelled.
Toor, 35, has a young family. He also has a lengthy criminal record. He grew up in Squamish.
He was rushed to hospital after being hit several times but died.
Vancouver Police are investigating as Port Moody Police is a small muncipal agency and has contracted out investigations of murders to the VPD. There are very few slayings in Port Moody.
This appears to be yet another in a long series of shootings related to escalated gang tensions.
The popular rec centre, at 300 Ioco Road, was busy at the time of the shooting. It will remain closed for some time, VPD Const. Lindsey Houghton says.

PORT COQUITLAM (NEWS1130) - A group of seven-year-old girls discovered the body of a man in the back of their school.
Classes went underway at Irvine Elementary, despite police tape surrounding a path and creek in the rear area of the property.
That's where the body of a man in his 30s was found this morning.
Police say there's no sign of foul place. His name hasn't been released as next-of-kin are still being notified.
Parent of a student at Irvine Elementary says the group of girls who discovered the body were playing near a fence adjoining the school ground during recess.
The Coquitlam School District sent out a letter to parents, saying the body had likely been there since the weekend. It also offered counselling to students.
The district says about 370 students attend the school.

So many guys have died for this lifestyle, but nobody gets the message. You can be the biggest boss you want, but one day its gonna be you.
And they never will get the message.
Vancouver is one of the most materialistic cities in NA so the lure of driving a fancy car, living in a nice condo in downtown and flossing money for the honeys will never disappear amongst the young kids who want to act tough and get everything without going to school and working.
And I will say the cops have done a decent job of keeping a lid on the gang violence in the lower Mainland but there's some OG's that even the cops don't really want to see around and deal with anymore.
Just spitballing here, but I was thinking...of all the financial resources going into curbing gang and drug activity, witness protection, etc. If they could use money as a reward system for tips that lead to convictions. Not like 669-tips, but larger more significant amounts of money. It'd be a great incentive for the lower level guys to take the money once they feel the heat is coming on. Plus there's no honor among thieves, so lots of scumbags that are jealous of their rivals can easily screw over people.

all the 'real' bosses remain untouched and remain largely out of the limelight though so all these guys see that and figure they can be that one day

Targeted shooting overnight in Surrey
SURREY (NEWS1130) - One man is dead after a targeted shooting in Surrey.
It happened shortly before midnight near 110th Avenue and 158A Street. Homicide investigators say the victim, who's been identified as 46-year-old Christopher Pammenter, was shot in his car. He died at the scene.
Cody lives in the area; he tells us it used to be a rougher neighbourhood, but he didn't expect something like this.
"[I'm] a little surprised now, because of the people that's been moving in around this neighbourhood. It's been family-oriented, quiet people. They've all got kids. They keep to themselves. It's a little shocking," he explains.
The victim is known to police, who say the shooting was gang-related.

METRO VANCOUVER -- Homicide police have taken over the investigation after a man was shot multiple times in broad daylight in Surrey.
He was rushed to Royal Columbian hospital, where he later died.
Calling the targeted attack "brazen and deplorable," Surrey RCMP Sgt. Drew Grainger said the victim was shot multiple times while sitting in the passenger side of a car in a busy strip mall parking lot at 68 Avenue and King George Boulevard.
Grainger said the shooting was of particular concern because the plaza has a number of businesses catering to families and children, and took place right at the end of a school day.
The victim has not been identified, and no further details were available from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.
Paramedics were called by the RCMP just before 2:45 p.m., according to BC Ambulance Service.
An employee of Greco's Specialty Foods in the plaza said she heard sirens around 3 p.m., and shortly after around eight police cruisers and a fire truck arrived along with paramedics, along with two life support unit ambulances. The plaza parking lot was blocked by police tape for most of the afternoon.

Vancouver Police are investigating a daytime shooting in the West End of Vancouver that has officers looking for suspects.
Shortly before 3 p.m., police received several calls from people in the area of the 1300 Block of Jervis Street, at the south lane of Comox, who reported hearing what they believed were gunshots.
Police officers arrived and located shell casings in the alley.
Police stopped a vehicle that had apparent bullet holes in it travelling over the Burrard Street Bridge and the bridge remains temporarily closed as police conduct their investigation. Early indications are that this was a targeted attack, no suspects have been identified and the investigation is ongoing.

Generally, if the SWAT team comes to one of your neighbour's houses, you were expecting them to come by. Very rarely will it be a surprise that a SWAT team comes and storms your neighbours house and you have NO idea what is going on.

Teenager found shot in Richmond restaurant parking lot - News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/news/local/article/422436--teenager-found-shot-in-richmond-restaurant-parking-lot)
RICHMOND (NEWS1130) - A Japanese restaurant at a strip mall in Richmond is now a crime scene.
Police are trying to piece together why an 18-year-old man would have been shot in the restaurant parking lot at Capstan Way and Garden City late yesterday afternoon.
The man was found by paramedics and police in front of Manzo, a Japanese restaurant in the strip mall around dinner time. He'd been shot in the leg by suspects who got away in a vehicle.
Police say the teenager is known to them.
The restaurant is flanked by other eating establishments and shops, but people working in the other businesses didn't hear any gunshots.
An employee of the insurance office just to the south of the restaurant says she was alerted to something happening when a colleague said she saw a man lying in the parking lot.
"We went out and there was a woman holding onto a man on the ground, in front of the Manzo restaurant and then we heard the cops," she says.
She is somewhat concerned, considering the shooting happened when businesses were still open. "A customer of ours told me he had heard about a similar event a couple of days ago.... another gunshot."
"We're worrying. It's getting really bad in this area," says her co-worker.

Shooting at a Burnaby Hotel "Executive"
METRO VANCOUVER -- A shooting in Burnaby has left a hotel cordoned off and, according to initial reports, at least one person is dead.
Witnesses say they heard several gunshots and can see shattered glass around the front entrance of the Executive Hotel and Conference Centre on the Lougheed Highway.
Click here to see more photos of the shooting
Around noon on Monday, Chris Hashimoto was just getting out of bed at his condo on Halifax Street, adjacent to the hotel, when he heard the sound of gunshots.
"I thought it was construction happening across the street. It sounded like heavy machinery the first couple of times, and after the few shots, the rapid succession, I thought no - that sounded like gunfire," he said from his balcony overlooking the scene.
He said police cruisers, a fire truck and two ambulances were visible, as well as shattered glass surrounding the front entrance of the hotel.
RCMP Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokeswoman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, confirmed she was heading to the scene but the number of victims or suspects was not immediately known.

More details on the Burnaby shooting:
BURNABY (NEWS1130) - Two people have been killed in a shooting in Burnaby today.
There's a heavy police presence near Lougheed and Madison in Burnaby; News1130 has learned one of the men shot today was Sukh Dhak. His brother Gurmit Singh Dhak was shot dead at Metrotown shopping centre in October 2010.
The other man shot may have been his body guard.
News1130's Anita Bathe says she could see one body laying in the front doorway to the hotel, and another further into the lobby of the Executive Hotel.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is handling the case, and it confirms this was a targeted attack.
Don lives nearby and heard some sort of commotion at about 11:45 a.m. "It sounded like a whole bunch of wood falling down from a building... I thought it was like a scaffolding coming down or something."

From the news, I didn't think it was him at first because he is supposed to still be on trial, a five week affair in a high security court room. Interestingly, he manages to get killed on the day he doesn't have to be in Court because of an adjournment.

Follow up in the Maple Batalia murder
Two males have been arrested in connection with the homicide of Maple Batalia, a Surrey teenager gunned down last year as she was leaving Simon Fraser University.
Sgt. Jennifer Pound, a spokeswoman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said the two males are in custody and are facing murder charges.
Pound released few details on Saturday, but said a news conference will be held at 6 p.m. in Surrey to update the public on the case. Members of Batalia's family are also expected to attend.
The 19-year-old SFU student was shot to death about 1 a.m. on Sept. 28, 2011 as she left SFU’s Surrey campus after an evening of studying with friends.
Batalia was a health sciences student and a part-time actor and model. She had hoped to become a doctor.

Shooting in Surrey, this morning. Wouldn't be surprised if the guy survives. It took him 6 shots to hit that woman twice. It'd take, at least, 3 tries to end himself.
Woman shot in front of her 10-year-old son in Surrey | News1130 (http://www.news1130.com/2012/12/21/woman-shot-in-front-of-her-10-year-old-son-in-surrey/)
SURREY (NEWS1130) – A 10-year-old boy is now staying with relatives after his mother was shot during a suspected domestic dispute in Surrey early this morning.
The woman in her mid-30s is recovering after she was shot twice.
She and her son arrived at their home around 127th Street and 63rd Avenue just after midnight. When they pulled into the carport, a man she knew was waiting for them.
Surrey RCMP Inspector Dan Splinter says the couple got into an argument. Witnesses reported hearing up to six shots fired.
He tells us the woman was hit once in the wrist and once in the shoulder. “Then, about 20 minutes later, one of our members pulled the vehicle over on a routine traffic matter and he obtained a driver’s licence and other material from the driver.”
“Our member was checking this information on his computer in his car and when he went back to talk to the driver… on his way up to the vehicle, he heard a gunshot. The driver had shot himself in the head,” says Splinter.
It’s unclear if the man will survive.
The boy wasn’t physically hurt, although he is quite shaken up.
The Independent Investigations Office has now been called in.

Two gangsters linked to the late Sukh Dhak were targeted in an early morning Surrey shooting, The Vancouver Sun has learned.
One of the men was killed and the other is in hospital in serious condition after the attack near 127 Street and 112B Avenue just before 2 am
The dead man was on bail on drug charges.
Both the gangsters shot early Tuesday were also targeted in separate shootings in the fall of 2011.
“Upon attendance the Surrey RCMP located a male on the ground who appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds. The male was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Sgt. Jennifer Pound, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said.
“IHIT can confirm that this most recent Surrey shooting was a targeted, gang related homicide. We are working closely with Surrey RCMP and the CFSEU-BC in order to process the scene quickly and determine who is responsible.”
The fatality is the fourth murder in two days in Surrey and the 8th in B,C, since Sunday.

Yikes... I'm assuming this would be an engagement or pre-wedding party. Just terrible for someone to go in there and shoot people. I believe this is the second time this has happened at Riverside.

Four men are in the hospital, at least one of them with life-threatening injuries, after a shooting at a banquet hall in Richmond this evening.
It took place at Riverside Banquet Hall at 14500 River Road just before 9 p.m.. The hall was the site of a longshoreman union induction meeting this evening, and just over 100 people were in the building at the time of the shooting.
An RCMP spokesperson said the shooting appears to be a targeted hit, but not gang related.
RCMP say they are not looking for any suspects at this time, but would not confirm whether any arrests have been made.
Paramedics have been on scene for hours, and RCMP are currently interviewing many of the people who were in the building.
A manager for Riverside Banquet Hall has told Global BC that none of the staff were injured.
Riverside Banquet Hall is the same place where gangster Kelly Buttar was shot and killed during a wedding reception in December 2001.

Man killed on Elgin Street near East 47th Avenue
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Five men believed to have been involved in Vancouver’s first homicide of the year have been arrested. A sword may have been the murder weapon.
Three of the men arrested are still in police custody. Police say the murder happened during a street brawl that appears to have been targeted.
Constable Brian Montague says it looks like all kinds of weapons were used: bats, clubs and even a sword, which is believed to be the weapon that killed the 19-year-old on Elgin Street near East 47th Avenue.
“The victim is known to police. There are suggestions that there [are] ties to the drug trade. There are some loose gang connections, but nothing to suggest that he is affiliated with any major gang,” he says.
No charges have been laid.
Two cars have also been seized; people who live in the area say yelling matches are common on the lawn of a home in question.
“I can’t get into where… the suspects or the victim lives. I can tell you that the victim was a Vancouver resident. Our investigators will find out exactly why they were at that location,” says Montague.
One neighbour tells News1130 she heard screaming around 10:30 p.m. and then heard a car screaming away.
Another neighbour says he saw the police’s flashing lights and came out to see what was going on. “We did see them taking one guy on a stretcher in an ambulance.”
A person at the scene who claims to know the victim says he was a criminology student who wanted to become a lawyer.
“We’re always concerned when there is a violent situation like this… any time someone is seriously injured or killed in a public place in such a brutal way,” Montague tells us. “[But] there’s nothing to suggest the general public has anything to be concerned about.”
Four of the men were arrested at VGH; police won’t go into detail, but do sayone suspect was injured and went to the hospital on his own. All of the suspects are under the age of 21.
This homicide comes about a week and a half after a bloody weekend in Metro Vancouver; four people were killed in three separate shootings in Surrey and four people were wounded in a shooting in Richmond.

Interesting. I actually met the victim of this latest one a couple of times.
It bothers me when "person known to police" is thrown in. They can say that if you called in to 911 or filed a police report at any time. You're automatically "known" to police because your name's on file.

So... not drug related (as far as I know), but this one hit close to home since I graduated and was friends with both victims involved.
RCMP have confirmed two suspicious deaths in a Vernon area home Monday as a homicide and suicide.
The bodies of Sheena Neifer, 29, and Gregory Neifer, 30, were discovered after RCMP responded to a report of shots fired at a home in the 5800 block of Hartnell Road Monday at 1:40 a.m.
“The pair died as a result of a homicide and suicide,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk Tuesday. “The investigation has determined that the two died as a result of gunshot wounds.”
Molendyk said Gregory Neifer killed his wife, then committed suicide.
A gun was recovered at the scene, though Molendyk would not disclose its make.
The call to police Monday morning came from inside the home.
When officers first arrived on the scene, they found the Neifers deceased, and one of the first responding officers assisted two children and an adult relative out of the home to a vehicle.
None of those three were harmed.
The children are under the age of 10 and are believed to now be in the company of family members.
The other adult in the home is a mother of one of the victims.
“The RCMP wants to assure the public that at no time was there any danger to anyone else in the neighbouring area,” said Molendyk, who also confirmed a marijuana grow-operation was found inside the home.
Molendyk said the couple was not known to police, and did not have any idea what led to the gunshots.
“As you can appreciate, our investigators are still talking with family members and following up on this matter to determine exactly what happened,” said Molendyk.
The investigating officers are asking anyone who might have heard shots being fired on Hartnell Road late Sunday night or early Monday morning to please call the Vernon RCMP office at 250-545-7171.

Shooting near the Sumas border crossing in Abbotsford
CTV British Columbia | Videos - Breaking B.C. News Videos (http://bc.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=896871)
2 Suspects exchanged gunfire with U.S. Customs & Border Patrol, one arrested, one may have fled into Canada
Authorities on both sides of the B.C. border launched a massive manhunt Tuesday morning after two suspects exchanged gunfire with Washington State border agents near the Sumas crossing.
A spokesperson with the U.S. Border Patrol says agents encountered the two men, both wearing camouflaged clothing and backpacks, around 9:10 a.m. in the Columbia Valley area, east of the town of Sumas.
Eric Dorais said one suspect fired at an agent and fled into the woods. The other was apprehended and is in custody.
Abbotsford Police were called in to assist the search after it was established that the suspect may have fled to the Canadian side of the border.
The RCMP Air 1 helicopter, two U.S. police helicopters and an emergency response team from Abbotsford conducted a massive air and ground search.
Roadblocks were set up along Marion and Vie roads following the incident.

Targeted shooting in Burnaby
No one was hit
BURNABY (NEWS1130) – Mounties in Burnaby say no shoppers were hurt when shots were fired at a mall parking lot last night. It happened at the Old Orchard Shopping Complex at the corner of Kingsway and Willingdon Avenue around 7 p.m.
“At this stage it appears to be a gang-motivated shooting between peripheral players believed to be involved in the drug trade,” says RCMP Sgt. Peter Thiessen.
Witnesses say three men were parked in silver BMW. One of the men got out and started walking before stopping, turning around and firing two shots at the other man in the car. The shooter then reportedly got into another car that was waiting nearby.
The men in the car have criminal records.
If you were in the area or have any information you are asked to call Burnaby RCMP Serious Crime Unit at 604.294.7922 or CrimeStoppers at 1.800.222.TIPS.

Man Killed in Shooting at Morgan Crossing (http://www.peacearchnews.com/news/204603571.html)
One man is dead and police are on the scene of what's being described as a targeted shooting in a South Surrey neighbourhood.
Officers raced to the Morgan Crossing shopping centre, in the 15700-block of Croydon Drive, after shots rang out around 7 p.m. Wednesday, sparking multiple 911 calls.
Surrey RCMP Chief Supt. Bill Fordy said the victim is believed to be a 28-year-old man who is known to police "for this lifestyle."
Fordy described the shooting as "eerily similar" to one that occurred in a Burnaby parking lot and that has been described as targeted and gang-related.
"I was just getting out of my car and I heard four gunshots," one witness told Peace Arch News.
The man, a White Rock resident who did not want to be named, described seeing a young male victim with what looked like gunshot wounds to his head lying on the ground next to a silver Mercedes SUV.
Another witness said he looked out of his bedroom window after hearing "three or four" shots from what sounded like an automatic weapon.
"I seen the man on the ground," the witness said. "He looked… pretty young. He wasn't moving."
The witness described the victim as a white male; he was wearing bright orange shoes, a grey T-shirt or hoodie, and blue jeans or dark-coloured pants.
The incident triggered "pure chaos," he said.
"Everyone was kind of screaming and in shock. It looked like the victim was deceased almost instantly. It was quick."
One woman carrying a young child and crying was seen running towards police, saying "tell me that's not my husband."
A crowd gathered, and police have cordoned off a large section of the shopping centre parking lot. Area businesses have been evacuated and a yellow tarp covers the victim's body.
Melany Hansen said she was in a class at the Steve Nash gym when the shooting occurred. She didn't hear anything, but said a woman came into the gym describing a pool of blood outside.
Officers with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team are on the scene.
Police have located a suspect vehicle, Fordy said, describing a silver Volkswagen Passat.
He expressed great concern that the incident occurred in a residential area and said substantial police resources have been deployed.
More to come…
Happened right outside Steve Nash apparently...

Bull. Organized crime always finds new opportunities. If pot is legalized they'll concentrate more on cocaine and heroin. If those get legalized for addicts then they'll concentrate on ecstasy or other pills. Then there's the old stand-bys of loan sharking, extortion, prostitution or gambling. Organized crime will always find somewhere to make money.

yeah, pretty sure beanbag rounds/rubber bullets/wood batons are/were part of the non-lethal arsenal... but all those are pain compliance tools which depend on the suspect being distracted by the pain of these rounds hitting them to drop the knife/stop charging with the knife/etc.
And since tasers are all up in the air as to whether they're safe for use, i'm not sure what else the police have to use against crazy knife-wielding suspects besides their 9mm/.40 cal sidearms from a standoff distance.

There was a drug lab down the street from me awhile ago. I used to come back from work/dates late in the evening and would walk up the alley to my house and be greeted by cops shining the light from their patrol car in my face. I guess they were trying to make sure nobody busted back in to try and salvage anything.

This woman is a friend of mine, I've talked to her since. She came out yelling with a knife and was apparently shot with both legs. She is a good hearted and intellignent young woman but I learned that she was possibly off her prescription drugs, and judging from her tendency to constantly need attention, I'm not surprised this happened in a way.
But I still don't get why cops can't use rubber bullets, mace, tasers etc ANYTHING but real bullets? She can't work now as she is recovering from bullet wounds.
Rubber bullets: not reliable in a real crisis standoff; hard to load both into a gun and choose.
Mace: only useful at close range and when you're at risk of a knife fight, close range can mean death.
Tasers: risk of heart attack when chest is compressed after tazing (which is to say, what they normally do after they immobilize you; flip you over, arms behind the back, knee to the shoulderblade).

Who cares if she can't work. She attacked police officers with a knife/scissors, i think that is the least of her worries.
It doesn't seem fair to ask the police to respond to a situation that puts them in a position to risk their own lives and expect them to use a less lethal option than what they are being attacked with.
Young woman wielding a pair of scissors (or a knife) versus police officers that have probably 50-100 lbs on her and are probably trained in disarming as well as other tactical fighting and they opt to shoot her in both her legs? Seems kind of fucked up to me IMO.

LOL @ everyone thinking just because a cop is stronger and "trained" for that kinda shit that they are supposed to use it. In the end if a cop has to defend themselves that's what they'll do and they aren't trained to be kung fu masters you can't expect them to run in and disarm her without hurting themselves or her.
I'd probably be the first to shit on cops for corruption and brutality, but come on guys. Cops do go through a lot of shit so if you ask him to go disarm some psycho jason bourne style and risk getting slashed, do you really think he would want to?
young woman with scissors = psycho jason bourne style?

I meant we expect the cop to be a jason bourne.
Ah ok.
With that, I still don't see the use of shooting a young woman yielding a pair of scissors in both her legs in order to detain/control her. From what I remember, there was some man holding a sword or something downtown and the police used methods such as taser and riot bullets etc to detain him. Perhaps this was situational, but I still can't find a reason for such actions.

Honestly, she's really lucky. Remember that guy swinging a chain? They shot him in the torso like ten times. Typically cops are trained to aim for the centre of mass...which means realistically, she should be dead now.

a bit OT but FYI, IIRC, rubber bullets are actually shot out of shotguns. It's not like cops have two types of magazines for their sidearms, one for live rounds and one for rubber bullets. The rounds themselves are about 1" in diameter i think. Same with beanbag rounds. Both are loaded into shotgun shells. I'm not sure if it's a budget issue or a risk issue that not all cops are equipped/trained with rubber bullets/beanbag gun (in fact, probably only a minority are) but they still can be lethal (depending on where the suspect is hit and how close they are when the shot goes off).
i guess it's the same reason our cops don't use pepperballs for riot control as well. shooting capsaicin-filled paintballs at people could still be pretty deadly. boston PD killed a girl with one back in the day. anyway, with all of these non-lethal rounds, they're supposed to shoot below the waist. [end of ramble]
my vote is still for a sticky net gun.

ive watched a few documentaries on the uprising in middle east and specifically egypt and they said a tactic that the riot control groups use now is to aim rubber bullets into the chest/head now trying to purposely blind protesters

Something like this?
I've never had the police shoot me mind you it's not to often I come at then with knives. My solution to not get shot would involve not waving guns or knives around or at cops but I'm not that original.

In that situation on Burrard St, the subject with the sword was not really advancing in a threatening manner with the weapon towards the officers or public. The subject was mostly pacing back and forth and yelling rants then attempted to flee without advancing in a threatening manner with the weapon.
What is different I believe in this situation is that the subject with the scissors advanced towards officers with the weapon in a threatening manner. Anytime a subject advances towards you with any weapon, be it a chain, scissors, brick, etc you are trained to open fire center mass. This lady was lucky she only got shot in the legs IMO. Also not all officers are deployed with ARWIN/crowd control weapons.

It still seems like an excessive amount of force given a situation where a subject advances toward you with a weapon that does not seem lethal (Brick, scissors). Also, out of curiosity, at what point does something become considered a weapon?
I can agree with that viewpoint/rationale though.

Anything is can be lethal. Im pretty sure I can kill you with a pair of scissors if I stabbed you in the heart. Cops have to go for the kill. Its possible for someone to get shot 3-4 times in the leg and still find ths strength to lunge forward at an attacker because of adrenAline.

Self preservation/protection is always the first priority.
Trust me, both a brick and scissors can be used as weapons. At what point does something become a weapon? When the intention of harm is placed on said object.

There have been some shootings in Surrey/Langely since the last time this thread was updated but iirc no deaths
A shooting happened in Abbotsford yesterday at 5:15pm! based off of multiple articles the victim, south asian in 20's, died in hospital and was in a dark coloured bmw when he was shot in a parking lot, witnesses indicate that there were more people in the car with the victim but police say only the victim was present when they arrived; there'll be an update by IHIT later today.
Driver fatally shot near busy Abbotsford intersection
The victim was in his twenties
ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – A man in his twenties has died after he was shot while behind the wheel of his sedan in downtown Abbotsford late Sunday afternoon.
At about 5:15 p.m., shots were fired from a light-coloured vehicle near the intersection of South Fraser Way and Emerson Street.
A bullet hit the driver of a dark-coloured sedan.
Ian MacDonald with Abbotsford Police says this could be a case of gang rivalry.
“Certainly it was brazen. The drive-by component of it is something that is consistent with things that police have experienced that are gang-related. But it’s far too early in this investigation to say that definitively,” he notes.
He points out there could have been more people involved besides the shooter and the victim.
“Some witnesses seem to believe that there might have been an additional person or two in the vehicle. But upon police arrival, there was only one person. He was transported to hospital where regrettably he succumbed to his injuries.”
The case is now being handled by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Unit.

A young man is dead after a fatal shooting in Abbotsford Sunday evening.
Abbotsford Police received 911 calls about shots fired near the intersection of South Fraser Way and Emerson Street at 5:15 pm.
“Witnesses indicated that shots were fired from a suspect vehicle into a dark coloured sedan,” Const. Ian MacDonald said in a news release.
:When Abbotsford Police Department Patrol Division officers arrived, they located a South Asian man in his 20’s seriously injured and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The man was transported to hospital and APD Major Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Unit members joined the investigation.”
Less than an hour later, the victim had died from his injuries.
MacDonald said the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has now taken over the investigation.
Anyone with information about this incident should call IHIT at 1-877-551-4448 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
My colleague Mike Hager is on the story.

^^^ Victim has been identified
ABBOTSFORD (NEWS1130) – A 25-year-old man, Harpreet Chahal, has been identified as the victim in Sunday’s drive-by shooting in Abbotsford.
It happened near a busy intersection at South Fraser Way near Emerson just after PM.
Chahal is known to police as an associate of Jujhar Khun-Khun, one of the men accused in the killing of Red Scorpion gangster Jonathan Bacon.
Five years ago, the two were convicted in a robbery and kidnapping.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says the shooting is targeting and gang-related.
When police arrived he was still alive but all attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and Chahal was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Witnesses in the area describe Chahal’s Mercedes traveling westbound on South Fraser Way when another vehicle, traveling in the same direction, shot into the Mercedes. The occupants traveling with Chahal fled the vehicle and investigators are attempting to identify them.
“This shooting occurred in a very public area where innocent people could have easily become victims. We are urging anyone with information to come forward and speak with investigators,” says Sgt. Jennifer Pound.
If you have any information you are asked to contact the IHIT tipline at 1-877-551-4448, or, if you wish to remain anonymous contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Man shoots at others; turns gun on himself
Gunman listed in critical condition
Mike Lloyd July 5, 2013 6:33 am
VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – People at the cafés and coffee shops in a trendy area of Vancouver were ducking for cover last night when bullets started flying in a bizarre shooting.
It happened at Main Street and East 26th Avenue, where one man was badly hurt by the time the whole thing was over.
Vancouver Police are still trying to figure out what exactly happened. Just after 11 p.m. a man got out of his car, he had a gun and started firing at two people he apparently targeted at random. They were not hurt and that’s when he turned the gun on himself, shooting himself in the head.
People who live in the area say the fact that two people were targeted at random is very unnerving. “It’s a pretty quiet neighbourhood overall so I’m definitely shocked that something like that happened,” says Adam.
The man who shot himself did survive and last night was rushed to hospital where he was last listed as being in critical condition.

i dont wanna be the guy to say it... but why waste the resources saving someone like that...
easier on society to have just let him pass away.. someone else could be using that hospital bed, using the court system and the mental hospital/jail he will be placed in...

Random acts of violence scare me the most. It's no longer about whom you associate yourself with, it's just being in the wrong place in the wrong time.
Thankfully, and not meaning to bring light to this terrible incident, the asshole must have had pretty terrible marksmanship skills.
