We will see 20+ games into the season, Tanev is a downward trending broken man, we were completely right not to sign him to anything resembling a long-term contract.

Calgary is going to be hurting in 2 years with both those contracts (Tanev and Markstrom) eating up 10.5 of cap space for 2 guys in their 30’s.

Calgary obviously thinks they have enough to go for it this year or next.

I understand where you’re coming from but Marky left while his game was in peak form whereas Tanev wanted a big contract when his longevity is risky/uncertain based on how he sacrifices the body.

That said, right now Toffoli might be the biggest loss. We got Holtby, Schmidt and Hamonic to fill the gaps defensively without doing much up front. Hoglander has been a nice surprise but I think Toffoli would have been nice to have in the lineup here early on with Miller out.

There's no doubt he's always been an excellent defender for us, but you have to give Hughes credit for Tanev's play last year. Hughes' puck possession is incredible, which meant Tanev wasn't getting stapled to the boards and getting injured as often as before. For the same reason, he also played on the offensive more. But at the core of it, he's still the same injury prone guy. It was sad to see him go, but I can see why they didn't want to take the gamble.

*And if I remember correctly, he actually got injured in the last game of the season, but the league was shut down for COVID after, so he didnt miss any games. lol

Toffoli: 2GP, 5 shots... even +/-, no PIM and no points with a 16:53 minute average

The first 10-15 games are going to be hit and miss with no pre-season, a short camp, and long offseason. Unfortunately, if you fall far behind in that stretch while you’re getting your systems figured out, you’re basically screwed because of the short season and every game being a 4-pointer.

Liquid posted something that, as I posted, is documented with a quote from the man himself stating he wants to stay. He ended up taking a reasonable contract from Montreal, so it's not outlandish to think he would've accepted a similar contract in Vancouver. You could have easily verified his comments yourself if you doubted him.

Re-signing Tylerfoli was a no brainer. The only issues that Sat brought up last night were that it's a lot more complicated than simply "dump JV and re-sign TT"

I completely agree. I was the one confused when GMJB when signing Ferland and Roussell, Beagle and Benn. Even when he signed Sutter to that terrible contract which thankfully is almost over. The only way to be successful in a salary cap league is to ensure that your bottom 6 and your bottom defense pairing is made up of either veterans on low risk, low wage contracts, or young guys still on their entry level deals.

The thought that the Canucks are spending $10.5 million on Roussell, Sutter and Beagle is insane, and will continue to hamper them over the next few years. No idea how Ferland plays out if he attempts another comeback.

Add in Eriksson, Spooner, Luongo, and Baertschi in the mix and that is another $13 million or so tied up. Not all Benning's fault, but the Canucks are in salary cap hell, and he should have realized that sooner than later.

I've heard the argument in our sample size so far that well even though goaltending hasn't been the reason why we've lost the difference with having Marky last year was he stole some games we had no business winning.
