At least Pettersson can still score from that spot, after hitting some more posts.
Bring back Mandy!!! She's so cute.

LOL. Edmonton goalie imitating a sieve. Edmonton players like, "We could be down 5-0 and we'll still win. No big deal. It's the Canucks."

In other hockey news, Montreal’s management fired coach Julien and assistant coach Kirk Muller.
Habs have sucked for the past eight games with six losses.
The good news is that Alex Burrows is hired as an assistant coach for the Habs now. :lawl:

A lot of the issues with our Canucks now also has to do with Aquaman being the owner.
The #FIREBENNING hashtags that you see in social media posts should also include Canucks fans calling for new team ownership.
We have a owner in Aquilini who played Godfather in the background in the past, pulling puppet strings, and dictating team decisions.
For example, Aquaman was behind the decision to hire Torts. That season under Tortorella was a lost season. The owner chose to hire an old school coach who asked all his players to block shots. Many Canucks players suffered bone fractures because Torts wanted his team to play that aggressive defensive style.
Aquaman has denied any micro managing of the team in terms of team operations by saying to the media in press conferences that the GM has "complete autonomy" in hockey operations decision. Complete BS.
Aquaman hired a popular former Canucks player in Linden as a PR move. Was Linden the best choice as Canucks GM when Aquaman could have spent more money to hire a more experienced GM for the team? That is a questionable hiring decision.
He hired a GM who rebuilt the team well in some respects with his good drafting acumen with drafting Petey, Boeser, Hughes, Demko etc.
However, Aquaman also hired a GM who made questionable decisions in terms of free agent signings and salary cap mismanagement.
Dim Jim's strategy of rebuilding the team on the fly with signing veteran players to try to help the young core players came with a pricey drawback of overpaid third and fourth line players.
The team now faces a huge salary cap management issues because Dim Jim chose to offer generous contracts to players like Loui, Sutter, Jay Beagle, etc.
I blame Benning AND Aquaman for the Canucks' dire situation now.

Can someone expound on how sparsely staffed Canucks Head Office is?
I recall reading that our Head Office is one of the lowest staffed for a team in the entire league? Reasoning by that is Aquaman is cheap, and would like to retain the least amount of salaried staff possible?
If that's the case, wouldn't that also be a big reasoning to our lack of success here?

Aquaman is certainly a very cheap employer. There are media reports in the past about his farm managers treating foreign workers like dirt.
https://globalnews.ca/news/5327787/migrant-workers-allege-poor-working-conditions-at-aquilini-owned-blueberry-farm/
The six women are some of of hundreds of temporary foreign workers (TFW) brought to Canada by Golden Eagle Farms, a company owned by the Aquilini group, which also owns the Vancouver Canucks.
Earlier this month, B.C.’s Employment Standards Branch ruled the Aquilinis had misrepresented the contracts of 174 workers, ordering the Aquilinis to pay $133,000 in back wages, vacation pay and overtime.
Six women from Guatemala are speaking out about their experience living and working at the Golden Eagle blueberry farm in Pitt Meadows.
The women complained about overcrowded housing, sleeping in rooms with three or four other people and inadequate facilities.
At work, the conditions were equally as poor, they allege.
According to several women, the hours were long with their access to water in the hot sun restricted by managers until they met their picking quota.

im not backing the owner or anything but the fact that people are saying he's cheap with the Canucks is appalling
the team is near the cap ceiling every year...generally is willing to bury contracts in the minors or do buyouts...shells out long term contracts and during the Gillis regime wiling to spend on sports science or whatever on the side...and this one year where there's barely any revenue coming in and most owners are in the black..of course purse strings are going to be tight.
if you think he's cheap what does that make Melnyk??

My criticisms of Aquaman being "cheap" have to do with his questionable hirings for management positions in the past. Yes, you can spend as much as you want for players contracts to be near the salary cap.
It takes more than just the players on the ice to make this franchise a Stanley Cup contender.
Like I said before, I think that Aquaman's hiring of Linden as team president was a PR move to get more attention from fans and the media. Hiring a popular former Canucks captain as your team president is questionable when Linden has no experience in making decisions in hockey operations like an experienced NHL executive.
Was Aquaman's decision to hire Linden instead of an actual experienced team president with a resume of playoff success also a way for the big boss to save salary?
I think so.
This is a good article to read.
The NHL is in an era where teams use data analytics, and hire specialists who help GMs make drafting and player signing decisions based on information.
Can somebody tell me if the Canucks use data analytics by hiring staff to look at stats and information for their hockey operations related decisions?
Or do the Canucks just rely on Dim Jim and his scouts to watch players during games in order to make decisions for drafting and signing players?
https://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/patrick-johnston-trevor-linden-left-the-canucks-a-year-ago-not-much-has-changed
-from the article in 2019:
With more and more data coming available, the modern NHL front office, you’d think, would be getting bigger, with more specialists than ever. That’s what’s happened in other sports, but that’s not the case here.
Instead, the Canucks' executive suite has featured mostly departures, with few replacements. Linden's departure was succeeded by Jeff Stipec and TC Carling, preceded by Laurence Gilman and Lorne Henning. Stipec was replaced internally, but the duties of the other four have been shuffled onto the desks of others.
The signs have been slowly accumulating, but suddenly this appears to be a budget-conscious organization. A steady run of playoff revenue may yet turn the off-ice spigots back on, but given how tight budgets are in the rest of the Aquilini businesses, that’s also not a straightforward assumption.
Budget conscious = cheap. Saving money through executive management hiring decisions by giving more duties to other management staff instead of hiring new employees to replace people who left the organization.
The lack of quality managers hired to replace Laurence Gilman, Lorne Henning, and the others just goes to show you Aquaman being budget conscious happened years before this pandemic plagued season.

To be fair firing Benning or Green isn't going to help this team right away anyway. Roster and contracts are still going plague this team.
Leaving Benning in: run the risk of him trying to make shit moves to 'save' his job like Chiarelli
Leaving Green in: continued losses will make a negative impact on the culture of the team and mental makeup of the core
I feel leaving Benning in could potentially cause more issues down the road.

i get the "consolidation" of positions and all but wasnt owner like firing coaches/GM's before their contracts are due...ie. Torts/AV/Gillis..thus paying them for not to be on payroll? These guys probably earn more in a year or 2 than those junior positions mentioned combined
Owner is also dishing out long term contracts like Myers/Eriksson/Luongo/Sedins/etc...paying players "dead money" not to play on the team.......whats the last long term big contract Melnyk handed out?
If we had a cheap owner...wasnt the previous owner Mccaw "cheap"?

Billionaires step on people’s toes. Somone like aqualini they have so many business interests it’s not like he’s there on the farms controlling some foreign berry picker lol..obviously it reflects poorly on his empire as a whole but it’s kind of inevitable with anyone with massive wealth and business interests.
In terms of the Canucks I think you would have a hard time finding a different owner who would be willing to shell out MORE than he has imo

This is DEFINITELY not alleged either. An ex of mine works for WorkSafe, and I recall her telling me about how Aquaman's farms had some of the highest instances of WCB claims per capita in the lower mainland. Like appallingly bad, amassing tons of fines from WCB as well.
I definitely believe those worker's reports.

Oh, the pain of being a Canucks fan.
I am old enough to remember the team’s game 7 losses in the Stanley Cup Finals to the Rangers in ‘94 and to the Bruins in 2011.
The team’s young core of players has potential to bring this franchise to the next level of being a legit championship contender.
The young guns need a competent GM who can fix our defence and get rid of bad contracts.
Dim Jim’s signing of the big pylon Tyler Myers, useless Swedish meatball Loui, keeping under achiever Shotgun Jake while losing Toffoli does not give me much confidence in this GM.

Former Canucks employee here. Control is a bigger issue than money. In the late 2000s they cleaned house with business ops staff to bring in people he wanted. Some of which were with the team since the Griffiths era. Nepotism runs deep in the organization.
Canucks HR is completely toxic. If HR came in and asked everyone in the department to for coffee, someone was getting fired on the spot. Your now ex-coworker and their belongings would be gone before you returned from the Tinseltown Starbucks.

The pay is below average compared to the equivalent job elsewhere and the novelty wears off for most people. The ones who stick around are the people genuinely passionate about the team. These were the people let go for no fault of their own.

Thank you for posting this. It's something I've always heard/suspected about the organization.
I've been a Canucks fan since childhood, and never understood why when people come into the organization, they seem to just flounder, to not have any love or drive for the team. When they leave, like AV for example, they find success elsewhere.
You can tell when people work for an organization they hate, the Canucks have always seemed to be cursed, whoever they bring in, I'm sure this would speak to a lot of that.

The Canucks had a team meeting this morning. As per Iain McIntyre on Sportsnet, the team talked about how to handle "pressure".
https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article/canucks-battle-dwindling-confidence-ahead-rematch-oilers/
As a long suffering Canucks fan since the early 80s, I am not waving a white towel on this team.
I hope the players man up. Hold each other accountable. Each player has each player's back on the ice.
We have heard all the cliches in sports. One game at a time. One shift at a time. It will take a 60 minute effort from every player to beat the Oilers tonight and turn the season around. Leave it all on the ice.
I wouldn't mind seeing Roussel or McEwen get into a fight in tonight's game to pump up the team. Play with intensity, and controlled aggression.
The team needs a huge confidence boost. Beating the Oilers would be a welcome boost.
Go Canucks go! :gun:
-from Nate Schmidt:
“Confidence is what makes any athlete play at their best,” defenceman Nate Schmidt said Wednesday. “If you're confident in your own game and you're confident in what you're doing, you don't have to think much. You just go out and play. You don't have to worry about if they score, you're not worried about (bad) things that are happening in the game.
“We have a team that's got swag, and if you go out and play with it, you play well. You try and have that mentality, like: I can make that play, we're in this thing for a reason, we can do these types of things. And you've got to go out and back it up.
“This is a game full of mistakes and whoever makes the least amount of them usually comes out on top. Having that belief in your team and the other guys is something that's incredibly vital to your success as a group and as an individual.

Yep... these kind of games happen.
When you put in the effort but the other goalie just plays solid, even better than your own.
That's why you're supposed to win the games where you have a strong lead and control of the game and not blow them. So that way when games like this happen, it's only just "one loss", instead of just more salt being dumped on the wound.

Ugh, those goals were not great.
1st one's rebound control was questionable.
2nd one looked bad.
3rd was was definitely soft.
4th one, he was sprawled out on the ice and way too slow on his recovery like he gave up.
It really doesn't help when they just played back-to-back last night and the goalie they had stopped everything. I think it's pretty obvious which goalie Canucks need to ride on now if they want to at least make it look like they still care about the playoffs.

Oh, I know. I was careful with my words in saying "look like they still care about the playoffs." rather than "make it to the playoffs."
Some guy on one of those Hockey YouTube channels applied some data analysis based on the history of previous seasons and the conclusion was basically Canucks can only lose 7 more games before they are mathematically eliminated from playoff berth, lol.

Trevor, although late, based that assumption on accumulating picks and supplementing our core with quality players / potential high pick ELC's to legitimately compete at the 4 year mark.
Even then, that was ridiculous as it had already been 5 years of mediocracy.
Since then, not only have we not accumulated picks/prospects (worse, given them away) but have also hamstrung the near future with terrible contracts.
both timelines were unacceptable, but this one is far worse.

I don’t want to come across as an apologist but I think the flat cap really impacted Benning’s plans. No, I don’t think he’s the greatest GM, and I’ve posted here more than once that his skillset should be paired with someone with more business acumen, like a Gillis.
That said, flat cap killed our chances to retain players like Marky, Tanev, Toffoli, Stecher and grow as an organization. Not to say we would’ve kept all 4 but we certainly wouldn’t have lost all of them.
Everyone enjoyed the playoff bubble run and can see that the Canucks aren’t a lost cause, overall. Yes, they’ve taken a step back so maybe now we do need another 2 years to contend. No one had a COVID crystal ball and I really believe we wouldn’t be having these types of conversations if the cap didn’t get flattened as a result.
That said, I’m not talking about other teams and how they’ve managed through this. I’m strictly speaking to how Benning may have had a solid plan as we saw proof of that last playoff run, and then shit happened.
To quote the great Canucks player (not person), Todd Bertuzzi: It is what it is.

So now that Demko is proving he can be a #1, does Holtby become our extremely expensive backup goalie? Another GMJB anchor? I doubt Seattle is going to pick him up in the expansion draft.
68style
03-09-2021, 10:00 AM
Our goalie position is still way less cap hit than most other teams, I’m fine with that move.
I mean, Demko and Holtby together are 2.5 less than Markstrom’s cap hit alone.
If he had brought in some no name everyone would be crying that Demko has no support.
Liquid_o2
03-09-2021, 10:18 AM
Demko is an RFA after this year. I wouldn't be surprised if we have 8 to 9 million tied up in our goalies next year
I'm willing to give Holtby a bit more leeway because he's now working with Ian Clark and we know what wonders he can do to goalies.
Markstrom also struggled when he first came over and now he's considered one of the top goalies in the league. Granted Marky got to work with Clark during his younger years, but there's no reason to believe that Holtby can't at least improve in the position as the season progresses. Worst case scenario is we let him go next season. Best case scenario is he plays well and Seattle either takes him during their draft or we ship him off for a pick next trade deadline.
Hondaracer
03-09-2021, 12:46 PM
Holtby had that one game a few weeks ago where he looked like he was playing Clark’s style. Was always square to the puck never caught out of position etc.
My worry would be with an older goalie like him even if he’s willing to learn, he might be too stuck in his ways to reinvent his style

Demko is an RFA after this year. I wouldn't be surprised if we have 8 to 9 million tied up in our goalies next year
No way
Bridge contract... it will be 2-3 years at 3-ish
There’s zero chance Demko is getting Markstrom money after less than a full season at #1. Flat cap era, lots of goalie parity and being a RFA he doesn’t have much rights... we will be at 7 and change (edited) for both goalies, anything else would be a grievous error

how are you at 6 and change for both goalies when Holtby himself takes 4.3M and you said a bridge contract for Demko is 3-ish...that's already like 7.3m+

My bad I thought Holtby’s cap hit was 3... okay so 7.5 then
It’s not bad for 2 legit goalies... Markstrom and Rittich are 9.25 together

Holtby's contract is back loaded.
His $ value this year is low but next year he get's paid more way more money.
That being said, I thought what Kevin Woodley said is interesting especially about Ian Clark.
i do agree it is a bit of a shame to see dipietro on the taxi squad.

Also remember he sat around in isolation in Vancouver in case he needed to be recalled during the bubble playoffs.
Not sure to blame JB for bad cap management and not able to grab someone cheap so Dipietro can play in Utica or AQ being cheap and didn't want to spend the money. In either case, what a waste of a top flight prospect.

Bettman said flat cap is going to be extended for 4 more years after next year... we are fucked
That said, it’s highly likely Petey and Hughes will sign bridge deals instead of trying to hit big dollars so it helps us a little bit.......

Sports Page is coming back and damn I’m so happy about it!!
https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/don-taylor-returning-tv-chek-dhaliwal-tsn-1040
Don Taylor is headed back to television, and he’s bringing two former TSN 1040 colleagues with him.
Taylor teased his return to the airwaves last week, saying it would “involve some friends from 1040.” This week, he promised “Rick’s return,” posting a photo of his friend and long-time colleague, Rick Dhaliwal.
Daily Hive has learned that Taylor and Dhaliwal, along with former TSN 1040 producer Ryan Henderson, will be part of a new television show on CHEK TV, where Sports Page found a home for four years from 2001 to 2005.
Dhaliwal will co-host with Taylor, with Henderson producing the show.
Fans will no doubt welcome Taylor’s return to TV as he was much beloved during his time on Sportsnet and Sports Page. Details about the show are still being fine-tuned, but expect a combination of Taylor’s television style mixed with the radio show.
Bob “The Moj” Marjanovich, Taylor’s former TSN 1040 co-host, is still weighing his options. “Moj has a lot of loyal sponsors behind him and could see himself return to either a radio station or podcast in the near future,” one source said.
Marjanovich was also the play-by-play voice of the BC Lions on radio over the last few years. The Lions are said to be fans of Marjanovich, and are hoping he remains in the role when the Leos find their new radio home, wherever that may be. Rumours are still swirling about a return to the CKNW airwaves, among other places.

I think there would be a Pearson trade soon which is why they added Vesey, that being said he's a perfect pick up to play bottom 6 for having to give nothing up to get him.

With Rouss, Beagle, Pettersen, Bailey out he's likely to fill one of those spots.
Also its JB if you expect him to do the right thing, prepare to be disappointed. Pearson has expressed interest in staying. Watch him get resigned long term lol!

Fuck they better trade Pearson, I have nothing against him in particular but that’s part of the problem — he never stands out. His vision is lacking and he doesn’t create anything.
Most importantly though? He’s going to decline soon and Podkolzin is almost assuredly his immediate top-6 replacement even though they don’t play the same wing.

Hughes with Tanev on the third pair
Then stack that PP1 with them and the twins...

Interesting, they were saying Vessey was gonna play but they couldn't get his work visa corrected in time.
Side bar, the waiver pick up worked out as the team was in Ottawa and Vessey was in TO so he didn't need to quarantine as he was less than 5 hrs drive away.

He did drive himself to Ottawa from what was reported. Im completely paraphrasing here but Friedman said something about how in the states u have a grace period where you're allowed to change employers(teams) without having the updated documentation to do so, where as in Canada theres no such grace period so it must be done first in order for him to play for a new team.
