I compare the two because Hoglander's IQ and effort level are very, VERY clearly better than everything Virtanen has shown us since his first year. It doesn't bode well for Jake because players who are this good, this fast will push him out of a job (as we saw in the form of a healthy scratch). Basically every drafted Canuck that has joined the team since Jake has already outperformed him. Hoglander just happens to be the latest in that list.

Kid seems to be built like a fire hydrant, is as tenacious on the puck as BoHo, and has extremely good hockey sense. Reminds me a lot of Cliff Ronning or Theo Fleury.

Safe to assume that Benn, Hamonic, Baertschi and Spooner are going to UFA so that frees up 6.57m in cap space. Edler, Sutter and Pearson may or may not re-sign with the team but I think it's heavily dependent on the dollar amounts. Management obviously likes having those 3 players on the team and what they bring, so it's just a matter of balancing the books. On the flip side, players can also opt to chase money as a UFA, but given how bad COVID has screwed up the economy then it's also assumed that they might not be getting big money contracts (see this past UFA period) I'd welcome them back at reduced salaries but not at their current amounts. I'd like to see Pearson retained for the simple fact that he seems to click well with Bo and it was a long time before the team found consistent wingers for him to develop with.

I don't know about Hawryluk cause he got screwed by Motte and has been on IR ever since. Rafferty has shown great promise in the AHL and limited time up here so worth keeping around. I don't know who Michaelis is but outside of him, pretty much every RFA brings a net positive to the team and should be re-signed. Problem with all of this is that our RFA group also has our two best players so I hope GMJB doesn't "run out of time"

Don't forget about signing Sutter to that ridiculous contract extension with a NO TRADE CLAUSE before the fucking guy even played a single game for us! A no trade clause for a guy that's cracked 40 points once in his entire career and was only averaging 26 points in his entire career before being traded here.

1 would argue that the brains behind the impeccable drafting record was Judd Brackett. But if it was Benning i wouldnt mind him being demoted and in charge of drafting and Gillis being in charge of the rest. Montreal and the Leafs are just better teams. This season will be different because of the mini-series’ and lack of variety between opponents.

Anyone who has played the game knows it’s not great for the confidence to line up against a superior team night after night. Reminds me of my last year of beer league. I could look at the schedule and know which games we’d win and which ones we’d lose with nearly pinpoint accuracy. Sure, sometimes you get lucky but going in knowing the opponent has better players isn’t great for the psyche.

I said before that I thought Tanev was super important to the culture of the team. He instantly became my favourite Canuck when I started following during the playoffs, especially after hearing the other players talk about him. They LOVED the guy.

Maybe he's beat up now and has a lower ceiling than Schmidt, but maybe there are other important things to a player and how he fits on your team? Especially when he made a particularly great paring with Hughes.

Maybe not so much the talent leaving, rather the dressing room leaders that left. Possible the team leaned on those two for keeping a level head and guiding the younger players. While miller is good, it almost seems he isn’t the type of person the younger players can look to for help or guidance. Elder is only one person. Who knows, could be a slippery slope down to the culture Edmonton has. Flipping coaches and GM’s with no stability.
