Hog Shack, Jurassic platter with burnt ends.

7/10

wanted meat, got meat, did it's job

memphis blues on graville and broadway

- ordered the pulled pork sandwich, really dry meat but the sauce compensated for it, would of been better if I asked for steamy / hot pulled pork instead of warm/dry.

7.5/10

Original Joes

- tried the cajun chicken sandwich and butter chicken rice bowl. Huge ass serving for both, super filling for butter chicken but felt plain, probably never getting the rice bowls ever again. (add sriracha sauce if you are going to try it) and the burger is not as good as the warehouse and cactus club's cajun chicken

Price per sizing is really good, portions were filling. Place is loud as fuck though haah

8/10

Sushi garden in burnaby

- cheap ass sushi with tons of kids eating there , korean sushi is not bad. nothing out of the ordinary (surprise surprise! Burnaby Sushi is all the same)

After eating sushi places in vancouver / richmond, I do not think I will ever eat sushi in surrey/burnaby. Don't know if it's just me but burnaby sushi joints are like those typical "california roll and spicy shashimi" places. They like to go on the "safe" side.

Like someone mentioned on this forum, almost all the "major" sushi restaurants (Sushi Garden, Sushi California, Sushi Town) in Burnaby are all the same because they were either a) started by the same guy as he moved around town or b) all the chefs were trained by the same guy(s).

Said Korean sushi joints are only good for quick cheap fixes, and I'd hardly classify them as great eats. A 10 min drive west gets you to Kishimoto on Commercial Dr. which, while different, is head and shoulders above any sushi place in Burnaby. A 20 min drive east gets you Sushi K Kamizato, which again is head and shoulders above any of the places in Burnaby.

I'm going to make sure the next restaurant or coffee shop venture I get into is called "The No Verdasco Diner/Cafe."

Hondaracer 03-28-2014 12:33 PM

Hy's for birthday dinner

Continues to impress each time I'm there. Best server I've ever had and some of the best oysters too

One common theme with you is you expect both top notch quality and quantity. What more do you expect? The waitress to shine your shoes and give you a bath in a Japanese hot spring? Or would you rather have a fisherman on stand by 24/7 who conveniently grabs a salmon from the river and ships it to the restaurant via FedEx with your name on it, tracking number and all?

As much as we appreciate the honesty, you aren't being very realistic. Going to Sushi Garden and getting upset over it and boycotting all Burnaby and Richmond sushi joints? C'mon man.

You remind me of the episode of the Simpsons where Homer gets kicked out of the buffet. You sure are one hell of a tough customer.

Verdasco 03-28-2014 04:36 PM

homer kicked out of the buffet? what about the time he was a food critic, thought u were going to use that example when i read the Simpsons :lawl:

Tropika @ Lansdowne. Didn't even know there was one opened there. I assume recent newly opened. 8/10. Curry beef brisket rice lunch. Can't complain for $8.50.

m3thods 03-30-2014 09:09 PM

Finally went out of my way to Richmond to get the beef brisket curry from Mui Garden. Years in the making. Curry had great flavour (but could have a bit more spicy imo). Quantity for $14 after tax (I got the rice for $2 which was actually quite large) is enough for 2 meals. 1 if you're really hungry. And I got what appeared to add up to an entire potato! It really hit the spot.

8/10

To accompany my meal, my gf and I drove to HK BBQ Master to finish up the Richmond errands. What can I say? Well it was a bit salty. But simply the best Chinese BBQ in the city. If any of you can suggest something better, please PM me or reply here. If I deem it better than HKBBQM, I may or may not purchase a beej for you on erslist with a man/woman (I don't discriminate) of your choosing. Maybe.

^IMO parker place..bbq store beside the fish market has best bbq in the city..

saveth 03-31-2014 08:49 AM

Those 2 are the best IMO. Hkbbqm has better skin whereas Parker place has better meat. Its really a toss up in my books.

Taikoo Yummy Food chinese-style (fung-sa wind-sand) fried chicken: 7/10. Nice thin batter, hot and crispy but not enough seasoning. The place at Aberdeen beside the japanese grill place is still better.

The malaysian stall next door for their Laksa. 7/10. Broth was pretty good, good amount of meat but a lot of noodles.

saveth put it very succinctly. I prefer the roast pork meat slightly over HKBBQM as it's not as salty. That said, overall package, I have to give it to HKBBQM. And the cha siu is no contest really, imo. HKBBQM is the best I've had to date.

BBMme 03-31-2014 08:41 PM

Romers burger in yaletown
4/10 nothing special about the burger and I had better else where. My gf ordered the noodle dish:p and it was crazy salty

Originally was going to head to rajio after the raving reviews, but doesn't open until 5pm so we headed to flying pig in gas town. I've been wanting to try this place for over a year and wow this place is awesome 9/10.

Got the braised pork macaroni.

The value is incredible.
Had hells ramen,
diablo chicken,
spot prawn, trout and tuna carpaccio,
snow crab, shrimp dumpling, beef, pork, onion, asparagus, and squid skewers
ebi mayo
Came to $54 with tax and tip with 2 glass bottles of coke.
Me and my wife left painfully full.

Visited Rajio earlier today after reading your second post about it and really enjoyed the atmosphere and service. Tako wasabi was simple yet so good.

pin pin flip food on fraser

food was meh, price was meh

6/10, basically viet food except more saltier with their fatty pork

anyone recommend a higher class Filipino restaurant? Lots of flies in this restaurant

Chef Tony Richmond
Decor:10/10
Food: 7.5/10

Has anyone been to this place before? The decor is monumental and its always packed. Its a Chinese seafood restaurant in the most hip and modern fashion but they should've focused more on their food :okay:

phunky.FOB 04-07-2014 02:27 AM

blue water cafe.
service. 9/10 i loved my waitress.

I don't think such a place exists. I'm thinking the "highest-class" place is Max's, which is a horrible thing to say. It's really unfortunate because being Filipino, I'd love to go out and get some food that I don't want to bug my mom for (or take the effort and time to cook myself- think kare kare).

But every time I'm told (by Filipinos, no less) about a "great" Filipino restaurant, I'm always skeptical since the standard for Filipino food seems to be set so damn low.

You're probably better off befriending a Filipino, and getting them to invite you to parties because Lord knows, once you go to one all you hear is "HAB YOU EATIN?" or "EAT CAM ON EAT MU-NA PIRST"

If you insist on restaurants though, I'm guessing Kumare and Little Ongpin (both in Richmond) are your best bets.
