thank you, my buddy tried the adobo chicken and nothing was special at all! just gravy mixed in with vinegar. He said his family friends made 10000x better adobo chicken compared to the restaurant so he was a bit disappointed.

I just went to kulinarya with friends on sunday, it's probably the best filipino food i've had.

^That's really good to hear. I'm moving into a condo development pretty much on top of that restaurant in a couple of years once it's completed. Hopefully they're still around so I can get my fix without driving to my parents' house lol

Mind reviewing a couple of the dishes? I'm mostly concerned with the kare-kare there in the bottom right (at least it looks like it). The sisig looks ok from the picture- it looks more soggy than "seared". And did you try any crispy pata?

IfUCare 04-08-2014 10:07 PM

I haven't had much filipino food so i'm probably not a good judge, but the bottom right dish you are pointing out is an internal organ dish. Wasn't a fan of the pig large intestine but the tripe was good. The kare kare is the red dish in the center and it was good, rich tomato taste and the fried potato gave it a good crunch. The crispy pata is the thing on the right, it was crispy salty goodness. I would go a lot more often if it wasn't a 45 mins drive out for me.

I love crispy pata and lechon kawali lol could use a recommendation for a place that serves it killer. I usually just go to pinpin

It's really unfortunate because being Filipino, I'd love to go out and get some food that I don't want to bug my mom for (or take the effort and time to cook myself- think kare kare).

But every time I'm told (by Filipinos, no less) about a "great" Filipino restaurant, I'm always skeptical since the standard for Filipino food seems to be set so damn low.

You're probably better off befriending a Filipino, and getting them to invite you to parties because Lord knows, once you go to one all you hear is "HAB YOU EATIN?" or "EAT CAM ON EAT MU-NA PIRST"

If you insist on restaurants though, I'm guessing Kumare and Little Ongpin (both in Richmond) are your best bets.

the only time (and last time) I've been to Kumare, everything was disgustingly oily. It was to the point that after i ate and got home, it felt like i was doing a colon cleanse. never again will i step foot in there.

Dang I'm not sure if it's one of those regional things but my idea of kare kare has no tomato paste or flavour lol. Just straight peanut buttery goodness. Nor does my family put in potatoes. Maybe I'll just check it out for myself lol

opps, i was mistaken....
the tomato one with potato was Kaldereta, and the kare kare was the one you described. I liked it minus the large intestine.

Ah thanks for clarifying!

Dang they put large intestine in the kare kare? It should only be ox-tail and tripe!!

Anyways time for a quick review:

Crepe des Amis (at the New West Quay): 10/10

Simply the best crepes I've had in the city. Better than that Asian stuff passed off as crepes. Better than Cafe Crepe by a mile. Every time I walk the boardwalk it's with a crepe from these guys.

Sadly, the owner of the place has brain cancer and is recovering from surgery in the hospital. The wife is working alone dealing with the craziness both at home and at the shop.

If you have a chance to check it out, I suggest you do it sooner rather than later because I don't know how much longer they'll be around. They already closed for a month earlier this year, and I suspect they'll do so more often.

I've tried a few in case any of you are wondering- their savoury crepes are excellent- not greasy at all, which is amazing considering they use cheese in a lot of them. My personal favorites are the lemon/butter/brown sugar and the nutella/strawberry. Crepes are whole wheat, and vegan upon request.

Been wanting to try authentic Filipino food, since Filipino-Chinese food disappointed me.

The Fish Shack
9/10

Ordered the oyster po-boy.. Wow that sandwich was pretty dang amazing. Ordered it to go the portion didn't seem to be as big as I thought it would be but that doesn't bother to me at all! Maybe I expected a bit too much after reading your guys's reviews. haha
I also ordered the fish tacos. They were pretty good too but I wish there was more sauce with it.

Would definitely come back to order more of those po boys.

Aura in Victoria:

Fifth time here and the quality is consistent, and for me, consistency is important.

Their menu changes, I think, once a month, and this is refreshing, yet they do keep some proven dishes on the menu.

Fried sushi was okay for appy.

Second appy was clam broth with Thai noodles and this was fantastic.

Mains was a duck dish and it was a big dish that filled me completely.

The mains was fantastic, cooked perfectly, with a perfect sauce and accompanying small starch portions.

Sneaked in a dessert Cookies & Creme (not Cream) which was okay.

Service is extremely attentive and courteous thanks to the manager that seems to be always there.

Requested window seats, got them, and the view of Victoria's inner harbour was spectacular.

Would definitely go again.

While I have not eaten there, I saw some of the photos you were talking about.

Two different takes on this: Purists may not enjoy the sushi as you can see in the photos; the sushi they make is too "busy" and/or doused with sauce. The more outgoing, creative types may enjoy it as it is a different concept and beyond the norm.

I personally prefer my sushi to stand out in terms of the quality of fish, rice, and craftsmanship, as opposed to what these folks are doing. However, I'd be willing to give it a chance if I were ever in the area.

i saw some photos on urbanspoon and like dukes said, it's very busy if you order the rolls or nigiri with those god awful sauces. but if you order the standard nigiri, they seem to be well made and fresh. this is only from my observation though.

Don't think I didn't try, they were booked full when I tried two weeks ago!

Just got back from a quick weekend trip to Seattle/Bellevue:

Cheesecake Factory (x2, as it was close to my hotel and was lazy to explore Bellevue):

Tomato Basil Pasta twice. Did not disappoint. Also tried the chicken fritada salad, which was quite good since the pasta got heavy. Might just be me, but the servings seem to have shrunk over the years. 7.5/10

Beecher's Pike Place- Tried the "world's best" mac and cheese. Quite good. Not bland like most restaurant mac and cheese. Definite kick from the cheese sauce for sure. I'm a sucker for KD, but this was up there. Worth a try if you're down there. 8.5/10

Ellenos Greek Yogurt Pike Place - So the guy hawking it was saying that it was the best Greek yogurt you'll ever taste, or you could slap him. Took him up on the offer. HOLY SHIT I didn't know Greek yogurt could be so damn good. Tried a berry and berry cheesecake flavour. The cheesecake tasted just like cheesecake! And I'm told by the other people there that lemon curd was the best out of them all (I didn't try as I was busy with the others). I normally hate Greek yogurt, but that guy pulled a Jesus Christ and made me a believer. 10/10

Mcdonalds - Tried the bacon mcdouble. I'm a huge McDouble fan, and bacon just put it over the top. 12/10 (might be a bit skewed because I was starving at the time)

snowball 04-21-2014 02:54 PM

tentatsu hasting and nanaimo 5/10

tasted fine going down, didn't feel fine coming out

m3thods 04-21-2014 03:04 PM

^Food poisoning only docked 5 points? Must've been a hell of a meal before getting sick lol

mako 04-21-2014 03:51 PM

Pink Peppercorn
First time going, will return.

8/10
