Japan House on Kingsway & Slocan 5/10 |

And some kid got stabbed there last year, I guess they changed the name? I'd walk down the 3 blocks to kings/nainamo to sushi by yuji. |
Foo's Ho Ho restaurant (Ho Ho Chop Suey) 8/10. Food was great, done the old way and everything felt nostalgic. I had Chicken Curry on rice and black bean chicken with green beans on rice. However, nobody was there except one person and she had to call in the cook. |
Araxi and Trattoria di Umberto, both in Whistler. ----------------- Araxi: Had the crispy soft shell crab Lobster cocktail Alaskan scallops with Israeli couscous Chocolate Fondant (lava cake) Crispy soft shell crab - cooked well, crispy (of course), but not enough taste without the complementary sauce (included). Lobster cocktail - fresh, tastes good with or without the complementary sauce Alaska sea scallops with Israeli couscous with 2 sauces - VERY good. Both sauces worked really well... and the couscous was a surprise, being very tasty and goes well with the scallops. Fondant - it was okay. Preferred it a little sweeter... it's almost the same as the one in Bluewater. The scallops was very, very good. The Alaskan variety of scallops is tastier than the Qualicum Bay variety at Bluewater + the starch (couscous) in Araxi is much better than the rice cakes at Bluewater. The appetizers were good, though the cripsy soft shell crab could be better. Dessert was good. Ambiance was noisy and the restaurant was not too dark and the place was packed and the place was well kept. Service was a okay at the start, but progressively got much better. Overall: good. 9.5/10. --------------- Trattoria di Umberto Had the Cream of Mushroom soup (Soup fo the day) + Lobster Gnocchi + Tiramisu The cream of mushroom soup was fantastic... the best mushroom soup ever... with ample taste, but not over the top salty, and the texture was not smooth.. it was a little gritty which was unique I liked it. Lobster Gnocchi... was good for the first half of the plate... but it was way too much Gnocchi and too little lobster meat. Lobster was cooked well and the sauce was good and the Gnocchi was cooked well Tiramisu was not as sweet as expected, but it was good, and it was in the regular "cake" shape. Tiramisu, in its regular form, is served in a cup or bowl, but it's a minor detail. Left stuffed. Service was very good. Ambiance: The restaurant itself is a little old in the Mountain Lodge hotel, and it was VERY noisy but the noise blends into the environment. 8.5/10. |
Fish Counter.. Shared a few things... oyster po boy, fish tacos, clam chowder... 8/10 will come back for the po boy... |
Looking forward to trying that one. Went to rajio last night, deep in kits on W10th/alma. 9/10 Bill was about 45 bucks for 2 of us with just cokes to drink and left full. ebi mayo (white guy and his wife out for japanese.....duh) - so good kimchi udon - nice fresh noodles, could use a bit more cabbage but overall great diablo chicken - spicy fried chicken, some may find it really spicy. Loved it. grilled pike mackerel - tasty, salty, exactly as expected ton toro yaki - only dish I didn't love, was a little dry and chewy, I've had much better at guu assorted carpaccio - my favourite dish, daikon, salmon, tuna and red snapper. Pretty much perfect. Service was great, coke was in a glass bottle which was a bonus and the whole meal was cheap. Stoked to go back. |
+1 for rajio, just wish it wasnt so far (for me). |
went on a 5 day trip to kyoto+osaka 2 weeks ago. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7454/1...297e8f4b_z.jpg kuruma 9/10. assorted chicken sashimi was excellent as always. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3686/1...77854d35_z.jpg http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2845/1...81138f90_z.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7394/1...a712e17c_z.jpg roan kikunoi (2 michelin stars) 9.5/10. probably the most affordable lunch kaiseki at 7250 Yen. service was excellent. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3764/1...4734e723_z.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7324/1...0cb3ae25_z.jpg http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2847/1...e49480e7_z.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7421/1...c5d451bb_z.jpg tempura matsu (actually a kaiseki-ryoutei despite the name). 11/10. best meal in my life and was over 10 courses I believe. very very hospitable service. a lot of famous chefs come from japan to dine here. also the clientele seems to be pretty famous also. i sat at the bar with a famous actor, a famous singer and a famous ballet dancer (10/10 would smash). sorry for shitty pics and inconsistent lighting. need to work on getting better at utilizing my camera. |
Famoso Neopolitan Pizzeria Abbotsford 8/10 2nd day open, went with my bud. Service was above average for a franchisey kind of place. Waitress brought the wrong size pizza, so he had to wait a couple minutes for the right one. Manager came over and paid for his pizza. The old school Italian oven cooks pizzas at something like 900 degrees, so it only takes a couple minutes to cook. Food was good, service was good. Prices are reasonable as well. |
Pho Ho at continental plaza in Richmond that just opened food: 9/10 (pho has no msg) price: 9.75 for large and $8.50 for small Their portions are huge (large is like extra large at other places) Talked with the owner and they said that they worked at Pho Hoa for 13 years before |
New Town Bakery & Restaurant (Chinatown) Warning: Disturbing wall of text, will ruin appetite Mods feel free to delete if too graphic For some odd reason, I was having trouble sleeping in this Saturday morning so I decided to head to New Town for breakfast, since they open at 6:30AM and offer an acceptable amount of decent food for the price (and also have very good bakery items). When I got there, I was promptly greeted by the female server and was asked to choose my own seat. I chose to sit in a booth, a choice I will later regret. For an early Saturday morning, the place was decently filled. To my right was a round table of maybe 5-6, appeared to be Filipino. Directly in front of me was an older man appearing to be having tea and reading the news on his own. To his right was another older man having his morning coffee. As for staff, aside from the server there was also a younger man working the steamers in the front. Seemingly average Chinatown morning. After reviewing the menu, I had opted for the Chinese style set breakfast and had chosen to have a radish meat pie with century egg congee, another choice I will later regret. My food arrived within minutes of ordering. I take my first few bites and then things start to get strange... Note: up until this point, I had only interacted in English, though I am completely fluent in Cantonese, including slang. As I'm eating, I began to notice a louder-than-normal conversation between the young man up front, the server, and the man in the booth directly in front of me. I wasn't really paying attention at first, but then the guy at the next table joined in too. I got curious. I glanced up at the man in front of me. From my seat, only the back of his head and a tiny bit of his shoulders are visible. He was strangely rocking and bobbing his body in the sort of rhythm that us men all know too well. This man was starting to sweat profusely. My stomach churned. I started paying attention to the conversation: *Cantonese* Young Manager: Mr. Chan, are you doing weird stuff under the table again?! Server: He is! He's in here all the time for breakfast. He's got his pants off. Old Man: I'm almost finished... I'm almost finished... Manager: You know I can't let you do that. If you insist, you'd best not come tomorrow. Old Man: I'm almost finished... Give me a second... Man at next table: I don't understand, why don't you finish these things in the comfort of your own home first beforehand?! -some more random comments- I look down at my bowl of congee. First time in my life that the texture of food began to matter. Eventually the man stops moving so violently Server: Mr. Chan, you'd better clean it up yourself, I'm not going to clean up after you. Man at next table: Looks like you'll need a different newspaper I hear some shuffling and scrunching of newspapers, plastic bags, and napkins, followed by the old man heading to the washroom with a fist full of napkins. Deeply disturbing experience. Especially disturbing to know this man is a repeat offender, and all parties involved were acting so nonchalantly about the matter. Seemed like I was the only one disgusted by this. ANY day that starts with a man jerking it in front of you will not be a good day. TL;DR: Ate congee while an old man at the next booth was openly rubbing one out. Eat here and you may sit on old man splooge. I wish I was making this up. Service 6/10 Food Usually: 7/10 Today: 0/10 Ambience Usually: 5/10 Today: -9000/10 Excuse me while I go puke until I forget what happened. Posted via RS Mobile |

Peaceful Restaurant on 5th and Quebec. 9/10 Big portions, delicious food. Spicy Cilantro Salad is probably one of the best veg dishes I've ever had. Dan Dan noodles and Beef Roll were solid. |
dont wanna make a new thread Anyone go to any dineouts this year? Anything worth going to? I find every year it gets worse, businesses just join for the heck of it (doing it for the money/volume) rather than actually care about what to put on the prefix menu that is a good representation of the restaurant as a whole. |

That's why you should only trust Goldstone Bakery and only Goldstone Bakery. The owner (dad) might look skinny and frail, but he is SO boss when it comes to running his business. You definitely won't find shiz like that happening in here. |
I love goldenstone, but the food is pretty mediocre. I think the reason I love it so much its because the interior reminds me of the Vancouver I grew up with? |
The Little Cheese Shop on Fort St in Victoria. I ate a lot of cheese straight up and I'm definitely going to be dropping a lot more money than I'd like to here...weekly. |
