Hapa has been pretty bad for years now. Even their "Hapa Hour" isn't worth it..

Belgard Kitchen - 8/10

Solid food and interesting menu items at reasonable prices. Got Speck & Asparagus, Tuna Two Ways (seared and confit), Meatballs w/ San Marzano sauce (very good), and Foraged Mushroom Risotto (decent but not earthy/mushroomy enough).

They are a brew-pub too but their beers were nothing special. Both the Saison and IPA did not have much body.

Expresso 09-22-2014 10:33 AM

^^^Postmark Brewing!

Yea I thought their beers were only ok too.

Finally got around to trying Chipotle. Had a bowl/salad (ordered a bowl, ended up picking all the veggies as well).

Enjoyed it thoroughly. Priced the same as food trucks in the area. Nice change from burgers/fries/poutine/hot dogs for a quick bite on a Sunday afternoon.

You will like it even better in the USA then b/c the portions are bigger.
There is one opening soon in Burlington by the Costco.

Cattle Cafe (Richmond)

My parents are taking a vacation in HK, and I was envious of the food they were going to enjoy, so we went to Cattle Cafe to see if they would fill that void. I had the Curry Beef, and it was excellent. The potatoes and curry were done perfectly, and the beef was decently tender. My wife had the Satay Beef Sandwich with Fries, and she said it was tasty. The bread was soft and chewy, and the fries were mega crispy!

We finished off the meal with the Cattle French Toast with honey dipping.

Maybe the location matters. I went to their Metrotown location years ago and it was the worst food ever. :heckno:

Dan Japanese Restaurant

Omakase
1. Some kind of broth.. I tasted dashi, miso, diakon bits, and maybe scallop? didn't blow me out of the water 6/10
2. Tuna tataki salad- wasn't especially mind blowing either 6/10
3. Kale + prawn kakiage, asparagus tempura- very well done 8/10
4. Salmon motoyaki- 10/10, highlight of the meal
5. Nigiri- saba, toro, salmon, calamari roll- 9/10 very fresh
6. Ramen in mushroom broth- 9/10- the broth was pretty amazing
7. Poached pears with salted caramel ice cream- poached pears were done very nicely, ice cream wasn't anything out of the ordinary 8/10
8. Creme caramel- it was like silk- luxuriously smooth and light 10/10

Overall for $50/pp 8.5/10. Would go back and try the a la carte menu. Service was very attentive without being overbearing.

Their fish noodle laksa :sweetjesus:

I wasn't a fan of their curry beef brisket though; was not cooked soft enough when I had it.

Tried it. Didn't like it. Maybe it was just that one time, but the bubbles weren't crispy, and weren't hollow. Either the iron wasn't hot enough, or they used too much batter. That was at the New West location.

I had 'em in HK, and these were nothing like it.

I've only ever gone to 2 locations: Richmond and New West. Now, I'm trying to remember if Richmond has been consistently better than the one in New West. I know the service was better in Richmond.

Went to that new place Makoto Ramenya on Pinetree and Glen in Coquitlam.

Terrible experience. Went a day after it's opening. Sit down, waitresses already seem clueless. Shows us the menu and then begin to point out that over half of the items on the menu are unavailable. No ramen, no skewers, barely anything else. Had yaki udon which was more just sauce with noodles on it.

Oh yeah, was handed a carbonated drink that was shaken enough to explode when opened which was great.

And in further investigation they apparently don't serve ramen after 6PM now and they only will do 150 orders of it per day........ It says ramen store right on the fucking sign and you can barely get ramen? Das sum BS

Was pretty disappointed overall. Doubt I'll be going back.

Dae ji Cutlet House

6.5/10. Slightly overpriced, it was good for a few bites but it got boring quickly. Chicken cutlet was bland and monotonous. Left feeling way too stuffed trying to finish it.

It's a nice place to go once (and only once), but find a table because the 'booth' seats have ridiculously tall backrests and narrow benches.

Romer's Burger Bar at Yaletown

5/10

Burger patties and bun were dry. Tried their rib burger and every bite felt like I was eating cardboard :/

Service was subpar. Only saving grace was their garlic fries

6.5/10 for the pull pork poutine.

Great place that my friends cousin opened. I don't know that I would rank it as my favorite Viet place but it's the most refreshing one for me. Every place I've gone to serves South Vietnam pho and food. Mr Red serves food from the North so the pho is a little different. I personal enjoy the chicken pho here but they got some other neat items as well.

dlo 10-23-2014 11:25 AM

^ pho cuon and crab cakes are killa haha
