gotta feel for him wanting to play in his home town since he missed last years

6thGear. 01-12-2009 10:16 PM

Haha. They showed Rick Bowness screaming at the team to make those tape to tape passes and not into the skates during practice.

It may take Lu a few games to get back to his old self before the injury I think. Cant wait to see him back in net though.

People are a bit shortsighted I see. Yes LaBarbera is the better goalie out the 2, but unlike Sanford, LaBarbera is looking to be a starter. Since the idea is to re-sign Luongo long-term, I doubt goalies like Schneider & LaBarbera will be willing stay in Luongo's shadow long-term.

Unlike the 2, Sanford has already accepted the role to the team and is already doing a decent job considering. Again, like I have stated, put LaBarbera in the same Back Up role playing 10 games or less per season and I doubt you will the see the same goaltender you see now and I guarantee you, in next year's time, when LaBarbera's game is a tad out of sync due to lack of constant game time, everyone will be criticizing LaBarbera for the same things everyone's criticizing Sanford. I can guarantee you all that.

Add that with the lack of retention rate for goalies looking primarily to be starters (LaBarbera), the question now becomes: is it better for the team to play a musical chair of back up goalies every year for Luongo, or just have a constant Luongo/Sanford tandem?

6thGear. 01-13-2009 12:02 AM

Actually, I was laughing at the fact Essensa got 21%. Probably a joke people played, but I still laughed.

Agreed. Now that Luongo is out, Labarbara is the better of the two (when he can play almost every game). For a goalie who is going to play MAYBE 10 games a year, I'll take Sanford.

On the topic of former goalies, has anyone heard any rumors lately about Dan Cloutier been linked the owner of the Porsche Cayenne that was involved in that fatal accident couple years ago? A friend of mine who's close to law enforcement told me some stuff which was quite interesting. I haven't posted it because I don't know if it's bullshit or not.

goo3 01-13-2009 02:23 AM

I heard it was bullshit on a talkshow and then all talk of it stopped.

whoa, let's not forget we're talking about chopped liver in both cases. the world won't end if we never see those two again. There are many other backups out there willing to play for < $1M.

I actually think we'd be a better team if we got one in the 1.5-2.0 range and save Luongo more for the playoffs.

Speaking of Cloutier, if anyone was wondering where he is now, he is living on his brothers couch in Corpus Christi, Texas :haha: true story.

Ronin 01-13-2009 06:37 AM

WTF? Cloots still made a bundle from his $4m a year with the Kings. How the heck is he poor?

He is not exactly a poor bum but he's not rich anymore. Clouts had maintained a pretty expensive lifestyle even as his career hit the skids, he is currently trying to sue the Kings over his contract buyout. He is staying in Texas with his brother in Texas because he is still desperate to be around hockey, his brother is the coach of the CHL team in Corpus Christi, and that was the only team that would allow him being around even if that meant just hanging around the team and not playing.

Clouts still thinks its a matter of recovering from surgery he had awhile ago and thats why he isn't in the NHL, but I've spoken to a few of his former teammates and the consensus is that he's just not mentally fit let alone mentally ready to handle being an NHL goalie again.

Pretty sad what has happened to him in the last few years.

ChaKo 01-13-2009 07:36 AM

doesn't he have a baby?

Having a family member who used to be apart of the organization, I'm going to add my 2cents and say its true. Pretty funny how that happened and the next day he went down with a suspicious knee injury, and nothing was really heard of again. He was never interviewed, never traveled with the team, and he secretly dissapeared.

I don't think that's the case when you have a superstar 6-7 million dollar goalie that wants to play 90% of the games. There's no reason to spend an extra 500k-1mil on the backup.

They should sit down and have a talk with Labarbera, clearly explain his role and see how he likes to play 10 games per season. If he's not gonna be happy with that role, it doesn't matter how good he is.

cdizzle_996 01-13-2009 09:15 AM

If you read the article on the Canucks goaltending in the Province yesterday he's completely up for that role.

3seriesBeeM 01-13-2009 09:23 AM

i could care less if labarara or sandford came back next year theres still alot better back ups than these two out there for the same price. and you will see if labarbara isnt playing on a consistent basis his skill level when it comes to throwing him in a game will drop off significantly. and with lu in net as a starter you cannot expect to get more than 10 games a season and thats hard for any back up. all we need is someone to come in off the bench and not steal games for us but at least keep us in a game and not give up garbage goals

hotjoint 01-13-2009 09:44 AM

I like Labarbera and hopes he backs up lu when he returns

Tim Budong 01-13-2009 09:53 AM

Clouts should backup Luongo
haha
i would LOVE to see that..

No, that would be confusing. Canucks would have a starting goalie crisis then. :(
