Disaster season for the Leafs LOL.
They can't even hope for a good draft pick cause Boston has their 1st rounder, hahahaha!

How is that funny?

The oilers in the 80's were awesome

Because you figured he'd cheer for Quebec or Montreal

Defenceman Christian Ehrhoff and the Vancouver Canucks are still in that awkward getting-to-know-you stage of their relationship.

The Canucks are trying to determine what kind of player they have in Ehrhoff, analysing his strengths and weaknesses.

Ehrhoff in turn is adapting to life with a new team, new coaches, a new system and wondering where he exactly fits in.

That process figures to speed up now that the Canucks will be without the services of Sami Salo for at least the next month. There's no more time left for formal introductions. This relationship must be taken to the next level.

Ehrhoff figures to be impacted as much as anyone on the Canuck defence by Salo's absence. He will likely replace Salo on the first-unit power play and like the rest of the Canuck defencemen, also figures to have his minutes increased to help fill a rather significant hole on the back end.

"Obviously, with the new coaching staff and a new team you have to kind of find your way and the coaches have to find a way to figure you out," Ehrhoff said Tuesday. "I think I am still in that process and they are still getting to know me and what I am all about and what my game is all about. Slowly, they'll figure out how to use me. All I can do is just try my best out there."

After beginning the season with a couple of mediocre outings, Ehrhoff has been better in the last three games. He leads Canuck defencemen with five points in five games and leads the team with a plus-three rating.

"The first couple of games I was obviously disappointed," Ehrhoff said. "The whole team didn't play well and I didn't play well at all, but the last couple games I have been better. I am not really worried about the points. I don't really think I am a point-per-game guy, but I will certainly take it as long as it is there."

When they acquired Ehrhoff from the San Jose Sharks late this past summer, the Canucks knew they were getting an offensively gifted defenceman who could skate well and help the team move the puck out of its own end. But there were questions about how solid Ehrhoff was in his own end. After all, he was minus-12 last season on a very good Sharks' team.

That is a stat that Ehrhoff hopes to turn around this season.

"Yeah, it bothers me for sure because you want to be a plus player and you want to be up there in the stats, but it just happened that way and it just seemed once you are in the hole it is tough to dig yourself out of it," Ehrhoff said.

Associate coach Rick Bowness, who handles the Canuck defenceman, is in agreement with Ehrhoff's own assessment of his play.

"He has really shown a lot in the last three games," Bowness said. "We're still trying to analyse this guy. We just got him. You have to evaluate players over a long period of time until you finally find out what you really have. We are seeing more out of him the last three games than we saw in training camp and the first two games. . .He has deserved the minutes he has received the last three games, he's certainly capable of playing on the power play, he's capable of playing a regular shift and he's capable of being a good penalty killer. We really like what we have seen the last thee games."

Ehrhoff has averaged 19:29 of ice time through the first five games. That figures to rise with Salo out of the lineup as he gets more time on the first power-play unit. That is a role he is accustomed to as he spent much of last season working alongside Dan Boyle on the Sharks' No. 1 power play.

"I have always been viewed as an offensive guy. Ever since I came in with San Jose they had me out there on the power play. (But) I like to view myself as an all-around player. I like to be out there killing penalties, too, and be out there in tough situations in the last minutes of the game. Hopefully, I can earn that confidence."

With Salo gone, there's no doubt that Ehrhoff will get that chance.

This is a fake Twitter account I think, but it's still funny.

AlainVigneault: Salo is not actually hurt. It's in his contract that if he plays 5 consecutive games, he gets a 4-6wk vacation.

he threw away our future just like how he is doing the same thing with the laffs

that team is not ready to make the jump by giving up a 1st rounder, altho kessel is a young developed talent
who knos how he will fit in

Hondaracer 10-14-2009 06:44 AM

Kessel will be a bust in TO

411ken 10-14-2009 06:52 AM

Kessel will NOT be a bust in TO..He is talented so I'm sure he will get his share of goals and the Laffs need him on the PP, etc..... They just need Toskala to play better or the "Monster" to be their #1 guy..

Also, they should call up Kadri again! kid is good. Although, I see Wilson getting the boot fairly soon if they don't turn this around.

hotjoint 10-14-2009 07:02 AM

damn next game is on friday? what a long break...

68style 10-14-2009 07:38 AM

Kessel will be a total bust in Toronto!! He doesn't have all-star and who knows why not Canadian Olympic team centre Marc Savard feeding him sweet passes in Toronto... he'll be just like Blake, another high price signing that only produced in 1 situation on his old team.

And the price was HIGH not even for his contract (which was stupid money too) but for the fact they gave up all their future first round draft picks! SO stupid. They're supposed to be rebuilding and they gave up all the tools that Pittsburgh used to win a cup (first round draft picks) to get a guy who scored 36 goals ONCE and is injured... hahaha Burke FML!!!

Think about it this way - Burrows got only 8 goals less than Kessel last year and he only started playing with the Sedins in the last third of the season... would you trade 3 years of your team's future away and $4mill for Burrows without the Sedins and expect him to change your 0-6 team?!?!

BTW I'd like to congratulate Brian Burke for putting together a team that's had the worst start in the Leafs 120+year history. Quite an achievement.

Hondaracer 10-14-2009 07:42 AM

If kessel can't get more then 70 points he's a bust.

And I'm fairly sure Wilson job is safe in TO even if they go 0-10, to fire him now would show that Burke is scared/panicing
