I was just in hoi an yesterday, I would go if I were you! I don't know a single Vietnamese word and it was fine. Exploring old town I think it's called was pretty neat. Skipped da nang and now I'm in hue. Heading to Hanoi on night bus tonight.

I booked a tour with Vega travel to Cat Ba Bay (which is an extension of the islands but without all the litter) from Hanoi for 167 USD. It is a 3 day / 2 night package with food, hotel, kayak, bike rental, and park fees included.

They were recommended in lonley plant's shoestring guide to SE Asia.

You can find a download of it with a google search. PM for link.

I'll be in Hanoi on the 12th, I'm leaving on the tour tomorrow. Then staying until the 13th.

I don't know a single word of english either. Wish I did, because I get this feeling bargaining is a huge deal, well that and when I speak english, I get tourist prices. Almost got hustled for a bottle of water 3 times the price.

You can google maps star places and sync it with your phone, then use google maps on a smartphone to get directions. If the day has clear sky, GPS is king! Not sure, but having a local SIM might help with faster GPS locks, since I think they use what cell tower your around to get an idea if where you are. With google maps, I even get bus routes, havent tried it yet, and everything is walking distance from where I am.

Got in yesterday and already toured everything west of the lake downtown. If your going to the water puppet theatre in Hanoi, book it early, the tickets were sold out for the last 2 days when I went to get them today.

FYI, I'm staying at the Rendevouz hostel,
31 Hàng Điếu, Phường Cửa Đông, Quận Hoàn Kiếm, Thành Phố Hà Nội
Việt Nam
(04) 3828 5777

Dorm washroom light doesn't work but it's in a decent part of town... at least, it seems that way.

LOL, trying to cross the street on a highway... feels like suicide.

Just got back from the Ha Long bay trip, and it was definitely worth it.

The only thing that wasn't really included was all the drinks on the boats. But buying water here is a must anyways, so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Ha long bay and Cat ba bay are about the same in terms of cleanliness.

Hanoi is stupid busy and noisy. That can be said about any major downtown city. Cat Ba bay town was very quiet and a welcomed changed. I'm hoping Hoi An will be like Cat Ba Bay.

I am considering to go Vietnam as a side trip in May. Where do you get your travel visa? I googled it but there are so many websites.

Got mine at Vietnam Visa on arrival | Apply Visa Online - My Vietnam Visa
or
If you have time you can send your passport to the Vietnamese embassy and pay only post.

You won't be able to get around the stamping fee of $45 USD.

I meant the Vietnamese embassy in Ottawa.

The stamping fee is at airports only, I think.

Lol, I did that on purpose....

Stayed 4 days in Saigon, then 2 days in Hue, then 2 days in Hoi An, then back to hue for a week or so, then back to Hoi An for 10 days, then back to Hue for a week or so, then to Saigon for 3 days, then back to hue for 10 more days....

My family is from Hoi An, my wife is from Hue.

If any of you guys head down to Hoi An, check out my Grandma's restaurant, it's one of many of the restaurant's on the waterfront where all the white people hang out. Catered to white people.

Ive only been to a few clubs in Nha Trang. Yasaka, Rocky Bar, Night Club. There all the same pretty much. Id say Yasaka is more popular. Of course theres alot of other clubs the tourists go to, i wouldnt go there myself.

My wife and I are going to Vietnam and Cambodia for 2 weeks in Aug 2014. I've digging ideas of which Cities to stay at and there are so much to see. So I'm reaching to you guys/girls for your help.
The cities we have in mind so far is just HCM, Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. We don't care too much about resorts and more into history, temples, markets and lots of food and eats.

Any kind of help would be great!

Did Vietnam/Cambodia last year. Siem Reap for sure! If you hit up Angkor Wat, that should take you almost a day. Nothing much is open at night there, but the night market is bumping. Other cities to see in Vietnam would be Hoi An. Was only there for a few hours, but if I get a chance, Id go back there for a couple days.
