should have been 2 on the podium. we are so good at dissapointment.

But another gold is still cool.

I think now, instead of going for the most medals... we should try to get the most golds. That's how the "winner" of the olympics used to be judged. Only one away from tying for 1st and then just get a few more and we're golden. Pun intended.

In other news, Kevin Martin and co are spanking the Chinese right now.

Canada spent 118 million on own the podium, US spent 58 mil, Canada has already admitted they will not win the medal count and is hoping to beat the Germans now. For me, all will be forgotten as long as we win the Gold in men's hockey

Not really a fair assessment. The US has spent far more than we have on sport for years and years. In preparation for these Olympics, our spending spiked to a very high amount but that isn't enough to beat a massive amount of spending for a long period of time.

I'm hoping that these Olympics show Canada that our athletes need more support and not just in terms of money.

You can't just expect to win everything in just 4 years of investment in athletes after decades of neglect. "Own the Podium" was a poor name for the program, but funding for athletes should continue after these games.

But as others have said, we have the talent as evidenced by our numerous 4/5th place finishes. The athletes succumbed to the pressure of being at home which has more to do with media hype and poor mental preparation.

dont be dissappointed...the IOC views whoever has the most golds to have 'WON' the games....we are tied for second with only 1 gold away from the states...and we are heavy gold favourites for many of these events in the final days...

we have a really good chance at Winning the games.

and with all these 4th & 5th finishes...im sure a lot of countries will view us as favourites going into Sochi to fight for top medal count as well

I don't buy that excuse.

The best athletes are the ones who don't succumb to the pressure, and find a way to win. If anything they should feed off the energy of competing at home.

Truth. I'm aware I'm not a world class athlete but I'm almost sure that hearing the roar of the crowd in my own home as I represent my country...that would power me up like a fucking Super-Saiyan.

My biggest fear after all this, is some clueless politician (hmm, is that redundant?) will decide all that expenditure didn't pay off and cut the program by July. Not that it needs to be $100M+ every year, but it surely needs to continue at a respectable level.

I'd rather be known as the country that supported its athletes to the tune of $100M only to have most of them finish 4th/5th, than the country whose athletes can't train properly because most of them need to hold down full-time jobs just to survive day to day.

Soundy 02-23-2010 02:56 PM

KEVIN MARTIN, WHAT SORT OF ALIEN LIFE FORM ARE YOU!?!

Ronin 02-23-2010 03:04 PM

Scoring four to seal the deal. He's amazing.

I just said this on Twitter but I love it when Kevin Martin says "Clean!" as the rock goes down the ice. It reminds me of Dave Chappelle as Prince playing basketball.

"GOOD."

I'm sure most of them still have to have jobs despite this program (Jon Montgomery is a car salesman/auctioneer)
