Wow, Clara... fantastic post-race interview. "Do you consider yourself the greatest Canadian athlete ever?" "No... I just consider myself a Canadian". What a gorgeous smile! Looks SO good... for 38!

raygunpk 02-24-2010 01:50 PM

getting a medal at that age, while doing summer olympics as well, is amazing in itself

You didn't seem to think she was beatable:

To put things into perspective...if anyone is to beat her, they have to destroy the best time ever put down on the oval. Whoever does that has to have the race of their life.

that was gonna help us tie 1st for gold if she did it. i guess bronze is better than nothing. still impressive for her age. just like other older athletes such as randy couture, hershel walker, gordie howe

Maybe but that's me being Canadian rather than realistic. ;)

Two seconds seemed insurmountable. SEVEN seconds is just god-like.

Article on the sacrifice of Moirs and Virtues:
http://www.ctvolympics.ca/news-centr...+moirs+virtues

"Parents of figure skaters fork out money for competitions, coaches, equipment, training, travel. Almost every time Tessa and Scott skated while growing up, a member of their families went along. So there was airfare and accommodations. They would have to pay for the accommodations of coaches, too. Tessa's costumes are $2,000 or more apiece. She goes through eight a year."

How exactly does Own the podium program fund athletes? Their parents' money would only go towards her figure skating

Ronin 02-24-2010 02:45 PM

Own The Podium supports the training and equipment costs of our athletes as well as part of their living costs, I believe, so that they have time to train full-time rather than having to hold a full-time job while training for the Olympics.

It's costly for sure but the same can be said of any sport (although 10 grand on costumes a year is a bit steeper than hockey equipment...). If their parents support it and a world class athlete is what comes out of that, then by all means, the government should show their support.

I seriously hope that these Olympics show how much support our athletes need and Canada continues to give our champions what they need.

heard somewhere the Own The Podium policy prevented some athletes to train with others from competing countries, which kinda sucks.

Guess it depends on what you mean by "prevented" (assuming your source isn't talking out his ass). If it means that OTP wouldn't fly them around the world for that training, well, that seems perfectly reasonable.

So nice to see the athletes speak so highly of the "Own The Podium" programme. The politicians eat that shit up, because it makes everyone look good. Whatshisnuts, the dishonourable premier, was in there like a dirty shirt - photo ops and saying he is going to conitnue to work with the federal government to ensure that the funding continues.

The programme is not perfect, but it's a start. Designed by athletes for athletes....... what a concept!

Kiss it? I'd lick it. First "hand" example of what's to cum.
