I'm still waiting for the temperature to drop, before I go buy mine for the Rav

Uh... if you do that, you're going to get hit by the crunch of people wanting to get winter tires too.

The smart thing is to get them ahead of time.

Well, that's ignorant of you. I drive a 4runner. And I wouldn't drive a rwd car with all seasons if there's alot of snow... Unless i'm drunk and looking for a good time.

I got myself some firestones. They look crazy as hell and are great in deep snow or packed snow. Not so much on ice. What is everyones opinion on studded tires?

Studded tires aren't necessary for Vancouver winters... As long as you have 4 winter tires that have good tread and are bought within 5 years (7 years from manufacture, or 5 years since driving on them), you're good.

Winter tires uses a different rubber compound compared to all seasons/summers. When the temperature outside drops below 7'C, winter tires won't harden like summers/all seasons. You will notice much better traction from acceleration and braking/turning on winters.

IMO, winter tires are both a good investment and insurance. One accident that can be avoided if you had better traction from proper winter tires will pay for the tires already. You'll also have the joy of laughing at everyone else that gets stuck because they don't have winters on, while you drive around them. :D

^ Very true! One of the best things I bought for my daily driver. My snow tires have saved my ass on more than one occasion. Worth the $$.

Don't be one of those assholes they show on the news, blocking traffic all sideways and shit, because you still have summer tires on. I don't give a fuck if your Bimmer has xdrive or whatever, you might end up killing yourself. Or worse, someone else.

I just hope that we don't get a monster dump of snow, like we did back in Dec '08. Although I love snow, it just got too deep! I ended up plowing the snow and got stuck a few times. Even with 4 snow tires. Which is why I also carry a shovel (metal ftw, helps to bust up ice) with me in the car when it's snowing outside. Not just for me, but to help others get going should need be.

Ever since I got stuck in a blizzard coming down from Whistler, I have loved snow tires. My family got down in our Sienna with X-Ice tires just fine, while we watched dozens of cars slide into the ditch on the old Sea to Sky.

Last winter, I was hit multiple times by drivers without snow tires because they couldn't turn/stop in time. I never had an issue getting stuck or being unable to move... it was just the other drivers who were more dangerous.

And like Spoon_Fed says, the only time I ever got stuck was getting high-centered because of too much snow.

This winter I want to put this in my car: http://www.coldsteel.com/spshovel.html

That shovel is pretty sick. All I got is a standard shovel for yard work, so it's a little too bulky for my trunk. I think I should put collision on my next insurance renewal in January...

roastpuff 11-07-2010 09:54 PM

Seriously awesome shovel... watch the youtube video.

Matsuda 11-07-2010 10:10 PM

I so would. I'd chuck it at C-Lais who hit my car in winter. "Oops, sorry, it slipped out of my hand!"

Oh, I stuck my 16" winter set on. See how ridiculously tight it is.

So that's it huh guys? Absolutely no hope for a wet rainy winter, we're fully expecting snow this year??

Does anyone remember winter of 08 and when it started snowing then, like what month did the first hard snowfall hit?

That's a 2" height difference! (I think) It will look pretty funny, but can't be worse than having 2 pairs of mismatched all seasons, you'll probably get a really inaccurate speedometer,
