There was a lot of the pails at the North Vancouver Canadian Tire yesterday, just checked the website now and they still have 409 of the 8 kg and 220 of the 15 kg. Tons and tons of 20 kg bags of regular salt

$4.50 each, Windsor Safe-T-Salt 10 kg at Superstore in Richmond!

Mikoyan 01-12-2017 11:48 PM

Saw at least 4 pallets of various sized bags of ice melt and rock salt at Canadian Tire on Grandview Highway.

I think it's designed to absorb moisture, because the areas that I apply it on (e.g. rough granite or cement stairs) turn really dry. But I make an effort to close the lid tightly on the plastic bottle I use to apply the product.

The bag itself can be resealed after you cut/make an opening at the top, and storage instructions say "keep sealed". In fact, I store my bags in the corner of my garage near the entrance - which is not the best because water/snow from my car drains in that direction! Fortunately the ice melt itself has stayed dry.

meanwhile in some parts of oregon...

Portland snowstorm: Day 2 of snow brings ice rescue, collapsed roofs (live updates) | OregonLive.com

it got so bad they had to call snow crews in from washington state and help dig them out.

SumAznGuy 01-13-2017 01:16 PM

It's going to be warm next week. We are expecting a Chinook to come up from the south.
This should melt all the remaining snow that we have as well as those poor folks in Portland. Next week, we may be needing an Ark.

thumper 01-13-2017 01:26 PM

not so sure about burnaby south. i was out there yesterday and there was so much leftover snow... it's like burnaby city crews don't even have that area on their maps.

Imagine driving home along a stretch of dark highway to see those beside you

So I guess homedepots just got their shipments of shovels in. Went to two locations and they got like 3-4 pallets of them.

Might be a little too lateeee

Speaking of which..............

carisear 01-15-2017 11:50 AM

I just bought a few of the little 5 kg containers at HD cuz they were cheaper than those big buckets posted by MG -- they aren't 'extreme' rated -- but they are good to like -20 which is more than enough for Vancouver.

With the higher temps and all the rain in the forecast, I wonder how the drains will hold up. I've seen a lot of them still covered with ice.

Lots of standing water and most likely flooding in certain areas

Harvey Specter 01-16-2017 12:35 AM

Can't wait for the rain to wash away all the salt and sand on the roads.

godwin 01-16-2017 12:46 AM

We live west of the Rockies... it is pretty hard for us to get Chinook wind as in the traditional warm dry wind after passing through the Rockies.

We are getting a warm air mass from the Pacific. Just be glad it is not the Pineapple Express.

Looks like the trend will have colder waether again after this week.

There will be tons of flooding and the city will issue a statement about how all citizens should be vigilant in making sure they clear their own drains instead of the city doing it's job.

It's not the city's job to babysit everyone who shovels their sidewalks and driveways and make sure they don't make a 5ft snow mound on top of one of the few catch basins on the block. Those people are just fucking everyone else on the block because now the water has nowhere to go. They're no smarter than the people who decide to throw the snow in the middle of the road turning it an ice rink and then complaining that their road is an ice rink and they can't drive down their street anymore and now demand a plow to come to their street.

If there's some of you who are worried and feeling a bit generous, you can clear off the catch basin yourself.

BurnabyMap
top left tap - Layers
scroll down and select Engineering Operations
select Infrastructure
select Storm

When you find a purple square that's half white/purple, that's a storm catch basin where the water will drain to

square = catch basin
circle = manhole

Vancouver has a similar map, just google vancouver GIS map and it should have similar tabs to get where you need to go.

roastpuff 01-16-2017 08:08 AM

I'm in Pemberton. This is gonna suck... heavy snow, followed by heavy rain, and I live in a flood prone area. Time to get a boat!
