New jets - Can you hear me now?

The first dozen or so F-35s slated to arrive in Canada won't be equipped with software that allows the stealth fighters to communicate with ground forces, a feature designed to prevent incidents of friendly fire.

The initial operating system also won't be equipped with a program that helps the fighters communicate with older aircraft, such as the Air Force's Aurora surveillance planes.

The software isn't expected to be added until an upgrade program is introduced in 2019, three years after the Royal Canadian Air Force begins taking delivery the advanced multi-role fighter.

The absence of both items in the initial operating system is alluded to in heavily-censored access-to-information documents, obtained by The Canadian Press and referenced in military publications in the United States.

The system that helps distinguish between friend and foe is known as a Blue Force Tracker, a GPS-enabled device, and its absence means the computers of the first F-35s will not be able to link with ground troops until software is updated.

Aside from being a communications tool, the tracker acts as a check against friendly fire.

Also missing is a feature known as a Link 16, which allows highly advanced aircraft to exchange data, such as text messages, with ships and other, older aircraft in real-time.

Not having either of them could mean that the country's first F-35s would have to stick close to home until the systems are installed and crews are trained in their use.

Officials with the manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, declined to answer questions about the software upgrades, which are divided into a series of blocks.

"Lockheed Martin isn't discussing Block 4 content at this time," said Keelan Green of Thornley-Fallis, an Ottawa company that handles media queries for the U.S. defence giant.

National Defence headquarters in Ottawa also declined comment and referred questions to the Pentagon's joint strike fighter office, which did not respond.

According to the Harper government, being able to operate with allies in complex air-to-ground missions, such as the recently concluded campaign over Libya, is one of the major selling points of the F-35.

It was revealed a few weeks ago that the initial batch of Canadian stealth fighters would not be able communicate in the Arctic without modification, or until the 2019 software update.

You can grab them from any recruiting center. There is lots of info online as well if you Google 'Canadian Forces CFAT'.

Great, more crap from the media. What fucking morons. Lockheed Martin and the Canadian Department of National Defenece should sue journalists and news papers who abuse the freedom of the press and mislead their readers with half truths with the intention of slandering the F-35 program, Lockheed Martin, and Canadian Department of National Defence.

I'm with belka on this one.

Honestly, not having any of those systems makes the entire program useless for its intended purpose. I call BS.

The software will be available in 2019, so what is the issue? There isn't one, just another bullshit excuse to sell their shit paper. I really hope these "journalists" get what's coming to them.....

Don't be silly, that'd be too convenient.

going to go to the recruitment centre in new west on friday morning. have a chat with the guys there.

JD¹³ 11-23-2011 04:25 PM

.

Raid3n 11-23-2011 04:29 PM

haha i would have loved to see the sgt.'s face if he found out what he used to do haha.

i wouldn't really expect an army guy to be all that entusiastic about AF though haha. army, navy and air may all be under the same name, but i am pretty sure they still divide themselves.

i know that it's pretty much a propaganda office, lol, but it's better than going in blind lol.

Good thread for you fighter pilot wannabes.

So, you want to be a Fighter Pilot?

Raid3n 11-25-2011 02:09 PM

Had a chat with the recruiting officer, looks like I'll need to do some upgrading. Going to need to upgrade my math and get pre calc. And get chem and physics if I want pilot.

Hondaracer 11-25-2011 02:41 PM

at the abby airshow is also a great time to chat with some pilots there

me and some buddies talked with a guy who was in currently training, his next step was the CF-18's so he had quite an extensive story to tell as to what the training involved etc.

Friend of mine whom went to school in Canada went to marine corp. He did have to give up his Canadian citizenship. Thats just how it goes. You are afterall suppose to be protecting the people of the US, not Canada.

Did he have dual citizenship to begin with or was he in the US for work or study? The hiccup I've run into is that the military will get you citizenship almost immediately but to apply you have to already be legally in the US. They can't "sponsor" someone into the country.

The other issue is that not being a US-born citizen I may never be eligible for Secret and higher security classifications which would exclude me from every position I'm interested in pursuing. Already have a Ranger recruiter working on that question.

that's ferrari world. they have a roller coaster there that's capable of accelerating as fast as an F1 car.

specs taken from the website:

Acceleration: 0-240km/h in 4.9sec, 0 -100km/h in 2sec
Maximum acceleration G-Force: 1.7Gs
Lowest elevation: 1.5m
Sharpest turn 70º
2.07 km track
Roller coaster cars are designed to resemble the Ferrari Formula One car, down to the exact “Rosso Scuderia”

on a side note, i read that you need to have perfect vision to become a pilot. does it need to be natural 20/20 vision or do they accept those who have had laser eye surgery as well?
