Have you tried just removing it and reinstalling it, cleaning the contacts and checking that the antennae cable is secure and not slipping off?

Was wondering if anyone can allow me to swap their working airport card into mine to test if that is indeed the problem before I purchase a replacement online.

Operation is super easy and with minimal risks. Requires the removal of 10 screws on the bottom, 1 screw holding down the airport card, and 2 antennas connected to the card.

have you checked to see if its a software issue? this happened to my macbook once before on an update and it ended up being a software issue. Plugged in the computer using ethernet and found a fix for it, mind you this was like 5+ years ago.

I removed the airport card and checked it out, looked alright, nothing blocking the contact points etc.

I went to the apple store today, the guy said its probably the airport card. I did not leave my laptop with them to fix, more expensive compared to ordering the part myself.

I do want to reformat my laptop, but I think I need to make a boot drive with OSX Maverick(since its the one I currently have). Do i just copy down my cd key or something so I can reinstall it? Also any experience reformatting via usb?

You don't need that anymore,
nowadays you just have to reboot in recovery,
the system will log onto your wifi,
then tell it you want to re-install the OS.
It will automatically download the OS and start running the install.

however if its a hardware failure with the Airport card, then this won't work, unless you can plug a wired connection in you MBA, i'm not sure.

I wonder if buying an ethernet adapter will allow me to connect to the internet or will it still require the airport card somehow.

if you take out the superdrive, you might even get a bit more savings. I'm running a second SSD in the superdrive bay.

Just download any DMG file of a bootable Maverick or Yosemite installation and use Disk Utility to restore it onto a USB drive, assuming ethernet won't give you access to download the recovery files.

That's exactly what im doing. I took out the super drive and replaced with HDD, and then replaced HDD slot with an SSD.

Maybe within this year I'll upgrade the HDD to another SSD.

But yeah its amazing, feels like brand new computer.

If prices drop more for SSDs, its pretty trippy to have 2 running SSDs. To some people, its like over kill, since the second SSD is just for storage more than anything else, but it makes a big difference when you put something like the iTunes folder on there.

Probably not gonna be a dead SSD. You'll get different errors like missing drive or no boot device or something if it was that.

I did this to my Early 2011 MBP. Removed the Superdrive and relocated the stock 500GB HD there, and installed a 128GB OCZ SSD in the HD's original location.... also upgraded the RAM to 16GB. Put the OS and all my Apps onto the SSD, along with "always accessed" files like my iTunes folder, videos (porn), etc. Best upgrade ever IMO, my MBP was never really "slow" but the response time, especially for opening apps, video etc. became insane. Worth the upgrade, and I put the Superdrive in an external housing... never actually used it since 2012 lol.

Anyone have any issues when running both an SSD and an HDD? It has been working fine for me over 2 years now after installing the optibay.

Today, my computer went to sleep and I was never able to open it again. I tried resetting the pram and scm and nothing happens. When I hold down option I can see my HDD but can't find the SSD. Is it stuck in a state of limbo or is it just dead? I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting it as well and still can't detect it.

with out case feet the bottom of the computer could rub on the harddrive cable causing the issue. it's a $60 fix at the apple store or I'm sure you can get it online

I'll probably just take it in and have them take a look at it. I'm out of warranty for a few years now so hopefully it's only the $60 I need to pay haha.
