Replace the SSD with another drive and see if you can see it when you boot from the install USB. If you can see the drive, I'd probably say there's an issue with the SSD.

I picked up an Anker battery for my 15" MacBook Pro on Amazon.
It's not the cheapest option, but still half the price of an Apple battery. I also picked Anker because they are known for aftermarket batteries with phones and have a warranty on the battery.
so my HDD ribbon on my early2011 macbookpro 13in died... AGAIN...
replaced it...
ugh. any issues if i just remove the superdrive altogether without putting anything in there?
I also need a new battery...and considering putting in 16gb... i figured its probably time for a new mac?
And you can take the drive out without any issue. If you want to breathe new life into your laptop, you could replace the SuperDrive with a HDD caddy + SSD.
I wouldn't bother upgrading RAM if you have 8GB already.

I do video editing and with a 16GB upgrade, I don't really feel it. The standard 8GB seemed to be well fitted for that task. I added in a 1TB SSD into my mid 2012 i7 and that made the most difference to keep the computer going for a while. I have a top spec 2015 iMac i7 with 16GB and a 3TB Fusion setup and although it's blazing fast I don't notice a dramatic difference in speed with video rendering but I'm sure gaming would be a lot different.

that ribbon is rubbing along that aluminum case on the bottom. nothing a piece of electrical tape to lower the damage on it moving forward
Spoiler!
Already on SSD.. albeit only at 240gb, but work docs/xls is on cloud. movies n stuff gets thrown into an external hdd anyways. I dont see the need to spend extra on adding an SSD to the superdrive
I also need a new battery as its been 527cycles already.

hmm good to know, I could be wrong here, but for your situation, video+ps+final cut rendering/processing requires more CPU power even tho the ram helps?
Main question would be..wait for Skylake intel chips to drop on rMBP or suck it up and get a rMBP 13in with 16gb ram...
If you feel the transition in technologies is really near then use this time to prep your existing computer to be of good working order if you are going to sell it. I've had nearly 10 years of MacBook unibody 15" and not one of them has had a ribbon issue. There must be a flaw somewhere in your computer that wears it out as my computers travel with me all over the world without fail.

It's a design flaw from Apple. Lots of threads about that cable. Which is sad. Everything else on my Mac is fine aside from the battery.
Not sure how much a 13in is going for nowadays tho
This is just a random thought, but if the cable for the SuperDrive uses the same standard SATA connectors as a SSD and not the mini ones, you could take the SuperDrive out and use its cable to connect your SSD. You can then tape the SSD down anywhere space allows.
EDIT: NVM, on closer inspection on ifixit, that's not possible. Also saw the HDD ribbon cable and it looks to be fairly secured despite being thin and fragile.

2011 Macbook pro with the high res screen option -- dog jumped on the macbook while closed now there's a green line across the screen. Hinge has a hairline fracture as well not sure which is causing this.
Anyone know of a local retailer who can fix this? I checked with apple and they couldn't give me a price until they opened it up
Macbook in question...
-Big fat heavy white macbook
-Mac OS X 10.5.8
-can't update web broswers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox) says computer doesn't meet requirements
-tried to check for software updates on the computer itself by pressing the apple on the top left, and it says everything is up to date

I can browse RS, but I can't go on Youtube
You might want to try a fresh install of a newer OS like 10.6 or 10.7. But yeah you''re nearing the end of life for those units.
My girlfriend got one of those new 12" Macbooks and wanted to use one of my wireless mouses. Then she realized she doesn't have a regular USB port for the dongle.
I lol'd while she makes fun of my Dell.
