I'm glad they're taking their time and doing their due diligence with the cases so the charges stick. I'd rather see a slow turn around than a fast one charging 100+ people and then having a bunch of appeals and overturned cases.

| Global BC | Water polo player banned from the sport due to participation in Stanley Cup riot Water polo player banned from the sport due to participation in Stanley Cup riot Quote: OTTAWA - National team water polo player Nathan Kotylak has been banned from the sport for two years due to his participation in June's Vancouver Stanley Cup riot.
The 18-year-old native of Maple Ridge, B.C., is ineligible to represent Canada until June 2013 and will not receive Sport Canada funding for the duration of the ban.
In a written decision, the Water Polo Canada discipline panel categorized Kotylak's role in the riot as “very serious.”
“Overall, I would say we're satisfied with the panel's ruling and the sanctions imposed,” Ahmed El-Awadi, executive director of Water Polo Canada, said in a statement. “These are formidable punishments considering the age of the athlete but, in our view, they are fully justified given the seriousness of the situation and the potential to dishonour and discredit our organization, our members, and Canadians in general.”
The panel determined that Kotylak's actions violated provisions of both Water Polo Canada's code of conduct and the athlete agreement.
Kotylak's membership with Water Polo Canada was also revoked, but he can apply for a June 2012 reinstatement. He must also repay any Sport Canada funding received since June 16.
Kotylak has 10 days to appeal the decision. | |

VPD is FINALLY coming to meet me tomorrow (I'd go to the station but I've got school every day from 11:30-6) to pick up my riot photos.
I've got a ton of things to sign and I've got to write all kinds of stuff about where the pictures were taken, where they were published, if they were edited, etc. They better get some convictions out of this or I'm going to be pissed that I did all this work for them to drop the ball.

Ah Good Guy Greg...Y U SO GOOD?
Anyways, two officers came to meet me at BCIT today. Took the DVDs I burned and had me sign a bunch of stuff along with a statement that I wrote. Might've taken 15 minutes? Boggles my mind that it's taken this long to get around to this.
If you were there that night, I encourage you to hand in your photos. They told me that the majority of the media they received is low res camera phone stuff so anything with definitive facial shots is a big help to them, especially if you have details on some of the more major stuff that happened that night (e.g. assault).

Holy crap. 40 to be charged by end of month, police say
Years?
You know, this is a little bit starting to get annoying. I understand some of the issues they have in identifying people, gathering proof and so on.
But years?
Charge what you can, get as many people as you can and move on.
At this point, if you were a rioter, I think you'd be better off not to turn yourself in, and go for a lack of due process defense.
Do we really want the police spending their time dealing with this for years down the road? I don't know that I do. Take 6 months, and nail a good group of people and call it a day.

Meanwhile, in other news, we are having an inquest that apparently no one believes in that is talking about how the police systematically ignored a growing problem of women disappearing in the DTES.
BUT-after 10 years, we managed to charge that kid that was screaming outside BMO with mischief after whacking glass that was already broken. He's 32 now. Enjoy your 10 hours of community service sucka!
Air grab-yes!
I don't want to diminish the importance of not letting people get away with rioting, and damaging the city for no reason. But, am I the only one that feels that the public appetite for justice on this has long since waned? At this point, would justice be served with charging 50 of the big offenders?
And do we really need Christy Dipshit Clark wanting to make the trials public? Do they need to become a drumhead type event publicized for their own sake?

The longevity of this sucks. But as long as all people possible get charged, have some what bad criminal records/ publicity, I'm happy.
Get off the police's backs. Their job is to enforce the law, investigate matters like this, and I'm sure they are frustrated more than anybody critizicing them, that their effort has no reward yet.
It's just a fucked up justice system.
P.s.. That's why I'm all for public justice on cases like these. Posted via RS Mobile |

Facebook identified more rioters than the police so far. They can say all sorts of things about their fancy pants process with computers in Indiana but fact of the matter is they're taking too long and a lot of people are going to get off with a slap on the wrist because of this.
Part of it is the Canadian justice system being too leineint and making it difficult for the police to do their jobs but at the same time, their level of organization and lack of preparation for this makes this whole thing take an excruciating amount of time. I agree with you guys...get 'er done and move on. I don't want to be talking about the riot a year from now.

Could it be that because the sale of these cars benefits them directly, that they are trying a wee bit harder?
Or is policing like water, in that it will take the path of least resistance?

60 people charged, 163 charges recommended.
One guy was caught because of DNA, and is a known sex offender.
Youngest guy charged in the 60 is 16, youngest girl is 17. Vancouver police recommend first Stanley Cup riot charges against 60 people
