Thoughts on oil changes for my situation?

I only insure and drive my 128i in the summer. The last oil change was in June last year, and I've insured it already this year. Since that last oil change, I've driven it only around 2000km, which is just a mix of city driving and weekend cruises on the sea to sky. No really hard driving like tracks or anything. It seems silly to change the oil after such little use, but it's also been almost a year. Should I just change it once a year simply for age? If I don't spend time on stuff like that I can instead use the time to maybe do my diff oil instead, which I don't know what the current state is.

Maybe I change it to avoid the bong bong bongs.

I also do far less kms per year than 5k kms, and I change the oil on my 128i once a year

Badhobz 04-30-2025 03:25 PM

how do you do an oil change without a dipstick? arent you afraid you'll over or underfill it?

underscore 04-30-2025 03:28 PM

With low mileage vehicles that I care about I do it once a year. My Grand Cherokee is probably every other year but that's basically a tractor engine from the 50s.

They... got rid of the dipstick?! :rukidding:

A 5.0-powered 128i would be fun!

Just pour it all in, it'll get eaten by the engine anyway /s

Joking aside I usually underfill by 0.5 to the spec, and top up as needed once the oil reading process is done.

headhunt3r 04-30-2025 05:12 PM

Dipsticks aren't always the best. The dipstick on my NA was impossible to read anyways. I do the same and fill up using spec. Thanks. Time to make a trip to CT and pick up some LL-01 on sale.

Dipstick? What? I take my baby to the dealer so I can get that free cappuccino and oogle the mainlander sales chicks and imagine them lubing me up like how the techs are lubing up my e82.

whitev70r 04-30-2025 05:34 PM

^ and finish it off with a nice vac and wash at a dealer. So what if it is $200 ... I got the money. *flex*

whitev70r 04-30-2025 05:38 PM

Anyone take advantage of the no PST on PHEV or EV? Today is last day.

I guess you don't need to take advantage of it since you got the money. :troll:

I don't have the money, they don't know I spent 4 figures on the car they're working on and I'm just leeching off of their free cappuccino.

Btw I get that 30% heritage discount because my car is old :lawl:

bcrdukes 04-30-2025 05:49 PM

I'm curious if the heritage discount is for parts and labour? Or is it just labour?

I tried to get the discount at Mini and they laughed me out the door despite being a BMW CCA member in good standing. :okay:

snowball 04-30-2025 05:54 PM

I change my oil filter once a year, but the actual oil once every 3 years in my summer car.

Actually it's 20% off certified parts and labor and 15% off repairs

https://www.autowestbmw.com/owners-advantage-program/

It seems like it's dealer specific and not BMW-wide

I honestly toyed around the idea of picking up a ~$12K BMW i3 as a commuter. Blame RabidRat as enabler ... :lol. But I don't need it cuz I'm whiteA3Etron already.

bcrdukes 04-30-2025 06:52 PM

All I can think of when I read i3 is greasy meat juice.

Wow thanks for sharing that Autowest program. Might come in handy later.

bcrdukes 04-30-2025 09:27 PM

Oh sweet. Mini Richmond has a similar program.

Most cars after like 2010 don't have dipsticks anymore. Part of the plan to make cars harder to work on so people have to pay for maintenance. So many new cars you need a fucking machine to code in a new battery even.

Hondaracer 05-01-2025 06:08 AM

The newer GT3’s you’ve gotta remove a cover to even get at the oil cap, that’s rhetorical extent of your access lol

Badhobz 05-01-2025 06:11 AM

Wait how do you know this Honda ?!? Did you join these Porsche douchebags ?!?!?!? Say it ain’t so !!!

Oh and I just learned they got rid of the dipstick on the hitlerbox 8.5. Glad I got my hitlerbox 8 instead and with a stick ! I better not say anything before it ends up in the shops again.
