That's precisely the issue I have with FB car groups: it's nearly impossible to find previous posts for info/reference. The whole model is designed on creating endless amounts of new content for content's sake. This is why forums are superior but the way the world is now (especially the young turds), no one has an attention span anymore so past information being "lost" doesn't matter.

The funniest thing about getting old is realizing how much better simpler shit is because things only really get super complex for ecnomoic and comfort reasons...

Any S2000 owner (current or previous) on RS drove an 2019+ miata? (The one with the higher revving engine)

Is it close enough as it gets for a modern car?

RabidRat 05-25-2025 11:23 AM

Yep. I had an '03 AP1, and I've driven a friend's ND2 around a bit.

Sacrilegious opinion: it's better. The driver interface (seating position, controls positioning, general ergonomics), and the balance of the vehicle all felt significantly better to me. The shift action didn't feel as good, but it felt very close. Steering feel was actually better imo. Everything felt tighter. I always felt like I was sitting up a little too high in the S2000, and the suspension just a little jittery in my '03 (and even a little in an AP2 I've driven a couple of times). But the ND2 felt really good and settled and predictable.

The only downside to me was the motor is... fine. It isn't full of character like that in the S2000, and especially the F20c. But as an overall package, the car is great.

Badhobz 05-25-2025 03:33 PM

I dont fit in an ND2, but I loved driving it (5 minutes around the block). I don't fit in a s2000 either so take my comments with a grain of salt.

+1, I owned and drove various AP1 and 2.

The steering blows on them and most of them are now at an age where all the rubber mounts, shifter bushings, and suspension bits need a refresh to feel anything close to original.

The ND2 is in fact the better car but it is quite a bit smaller. I would personally buy a Fiat 124 Abarth for 3 reasons.

1) It has better interior and cargo space than ND2
2) It has more reliable transmission than ND2, it uses the NC box
3) Far less rolly polly body roll on it, especially if you put better summer tires on
4) Club + Recaro spec Miata gives up interior, thicker top, etc. With the Abarth you get the sport seats AND the nice interior.
Bonus) It can make 300hp if you want to, big turbo, FMIC, intake, exhaust.

Just look at those seats, the red tach, and the Alcantara.

Badhobz 05-25-2025 03:52 PM

but i thought the abarth had that turbo engine that lagged to high heaven and when the boost does kick in, you go spinning like a top!

AstulzerRZD 05-25-2025 04:00 PM

Yeah it’ll never be as precise of a driving tool as the ND2.
NA engine and rolly suspension makes weight transfer easier to manages

Lag wise it’s worse in the 500. 124 has a much better exhaust and gear

If you guys had to choose one or the other, would you rather do a GR86 or a Miata?

No "I'd rather buy a '91 Civic DX Hatch, K-swap it, and invest the rest" allowed.

noclue 05-25-2025 05:12 PM

Thanks fellas.

Vancouver’s population growth brings extra congestion and shit drivers combined with BC’s onerous speeding laws that impounds your car over 40km; I’m starting to appreciate the motto “driving a slow car fast is better than driving a fast car slow”

To expand, when I was in gr.7 I got to ride along in an AP1 and I thought that was the closest thing to a motorcycle when it revved to 9k. But now a clean S2000 cost more than a new miata, and the miata is lighter and has all the modern creature comforts.

Hard choice. I'd probably have to pick the GR86 for my needs but I'd take a very long test drive in the Miata.

E36 m3 obviously.
But actually I like the 86 a lot more than the miata looks wise. I've never driven either but the idea of a backseat, even if it's barely usable is always more appealing than a 2 seater when you've got kids.

Only car? GR86. Fun weekend car? Miata.

bcrdukes 05-25-2025 05:52 PM

Colour me ignorant, but is the 124 Abarth badge engineered from the Mazda Miata? I know nothing about cars.

They are the same car essentially are they not?

AstulzerRZD 05-25-2025 06:36 PM

Same car but with the NC Miata trans instead of the fragile ND box.
Fiat 1.4T Multiair instead of Skyactive motor.
Less body roll in the suspension tune.
Bigger trunk.

IMO seeing ND1 drop to 20k in the US, resale value seems as terrible as Fiat.
It just comes down to which one you like more.

Yes the 9k is really exciting and lift off corner entry is insane.
You reallly have to be ripping it though.

ND2/124 engine had far more usable and fun midrange.
