Maybe I'm getting old, but that sign looks cheap like some Aliexpress knockoff. It might've looked okay without the lights - those little nubs make it look like it has a warts outbreak.

when i was dt for a convention there was a huge line up to take a pic with it. makes sense as a tourist, you get the backdrop of mountains, harbour, etc.

Ironically they took down the Amsterdam sign years ago because they were sick of the selfie-taking insta drones hogging up all the space from locals.

A lot of European cities have a sign like this, Munich and Nice both had it. Though the Vancouver one does look a little tacky

The Nanaimo one looks great, and I know it's a stupidly minor thing, but it irks me that the bottom wedge in the O is narrower than all the others.
