worth trying i say. u have 14 days/30min and can get a full refund. i've just been carrying the wind phone with me and checking bars. drove around a bit last night and quite a few 0-1 bar areas but only for a block or two. i kinda hate checking bars though... with rogers i never have to check but eh.

anyone know if wind gets service in rogers arena?

where exactly in vancouver does wind get bad service? i drove around everywhere and all in all i got bars everywhere. the odd time it dropped to one bar but would shoot right back up or if you made a call more bars would kick in. i drove all along main, fraser, clark, commercial, broadway, hastings, boundry, marine, lougheed, coquitlam, by cap college, hwy 1. these are just the places i was in over the course of the last 2 days and based on bars alone it appeared i had service everywhere. i haven't made many calls due to the 30min restriction but the ones i did make were clear and internet has been good when ever i used it.

i tried to find a reason to return this phone and stick with robbers but really i am not seeing one anymore. i think if the phone works at your house and the areas you frequent most it is a no brainer. the odd dead spot i can live with even.

2 places you got to think about before sigining up for wind.. your house and your work place.. other than that, your house is something you should prioritize in worrying if it will have reception..

Wind outdoors i never have a problem with, yes you will get 2 bars or so in some odd places even if there is no high rise building anywhere

but even with 1 or 2 bars, i had no problem making callings and even my internet speed is at 4kbph.. and at full 4 bars, my download speed averages at 8.6kbph

indoors is the only thing spotty about Wind.. friend's house in south van and another friend living in apartment in burnaby i get zero reception.. but thats it. anywhere i go i havent had a call drop on me yet..

i live in south van and get full bars, even downstairs it is good. 5min away at a friends place in south van it also works perfect, basement also. it must be hit or miss in this area. driving down fraser towards marine it dropped to 1 bar at times but shot right back up. since it works where i need it to i think i'll stick with it.

The other issue with the service could also be the phone. If you have the cheaper phones the signal isn't the best, if you have bb or better then of course the signal is better do to better technology in the phone.

the phone i've got now is the bb 9790 i was debating going for the cheaper curve 9320 but i think ill stick with the bold since i'm used to only using bold models.

sometimes i wish there was a way to just plaster the answers for the same questions all the time..

vancouver, is pretty much a given that yes it'll work. i've rarely had dead spots, and when i do lose reception, its the areas im expecting to lose reception. (underground skytrain) and the only odd data drop is on the skytrain from nanaimo till broadway-commercial.

burnaby i live in south burnaby and at home, i get 2 bars because of the building im in. i still have no problems surfing the net, tether on my phone, calls, texts, you name it. all around the city otherwise, no problems.

surrey... i was just there a few hours ago and i had no problems. apparently, it was south surrey? inside a house, still texted, used my data to surf, even called back to edmonton and had a 30 minute chat with family with no interruptions/drops at all

maybe it won't work in your area, or not enough to your liking but in general, the reception is good, and it works. it's outlined in the map on wind, and you can even search up where the towers are, but the only way to really find out "how's the reception in ______ area, is just try it. it's literally going to cost you a few dollars at most if you decide to return it because it just isn't satisfactory for you, but it might just be enough to have you go, hey, this is awesome, i'm cancelling my line with the big3 right now!


oh, and on a side note, i could be wrong with this, but i remember asking this before when i was still on fido.

you can do the paperwork for the number porting, but have that on hold before you decide to fully port over or not. i was able to do this for my line, but i couldnt since the fido account holder was my mom who lives in edmonton, so i had to get a new number. i don't know if it'll work in the case with an extended period like 3 months, but you can always ask for clarification.

also, one more thing you guys might want to think about with leaving the big 3, take note that the 700mhz frequency is going to be up for bidding sometime soon, and wind has it's eyes on that frequency to really stand up against the big 3 with a much more powerful presence, so if they do manage to get that frequency, don't be surprised if you don't see all of these awesome plans like we have today. current wind users are pretty much grandfathered with their plans, while the new plans aren't going to be as awesome if that get that frequency. at least, thats how i feel about it.

in regard to the # porting issue. when i grabbed my wind phone the in store rep said you can take a new # now and call into wind customer care to do a port afterwards.

all in all i've had the wind phone for 3 days now and am pretty happy. i barely use my phone anyways so i'd rather save the money $$$, get unlimited and gain the data. i will be giving up my rogers line in the next couple days.

Agree! These awesome plans will be non existent after they expand! I bet they'll be still a heck lot cheaper later on, but it'll be more like $29 for a few gigs of data rather than unlimited

I did. Quite pleased overall. only gripe. i barely have service at my house. Mobi was better in that respect. Everywhere else is full bars. hit downloads of anywhere from 8Mbps down to 500kbps. uploads are consistently close to 1 Mbps

on average 3Mbps down can be expected.

Voice quality sub par, dropped calls a lot.

It costs a tiny bit more than the Mobi BTS plan but worth it IMO.

Ever since Dave Left Mobi, its been downhill.

other things to consider:


no throttle till 6 GB in one month
Missed calls sms reminder. they text you when someone calls and cant connect.
much bigger network.
you should still buy the best AWS phone you can afford. ghetto phones will only make a shit network seem shittier.
wind's signal picks up right away, Mobi takes forever after a reboot.

The funny thing is service at my place is actually a bit better for me than when I was with Rogers. I used to have a dead spot at the bottom of my alleyway where there's a little dip. Now? No problems. And I even have one bar in the back corner of my basement suite too.

It's 5GB before they throttle u! I have reception everywhere that I usually go and dont need wifi most of the time.

I agree. Switched to a T-Mobile GalaxyS2 and the experience is much better than my crappy LG Optimus 2x.

I've had...I think one or two calls dropped (not so frequently that I can remember), but the missed call text thing is a blessing. I can turn off my phone if I'm at work or busy and even if someone hasn't left me any voice mail I still get a text that they called.

One dead spot I noticed is at my friends house I frequent at right by Killarney.
I would have 0-1 bar standing outside on the street. This is with a galaxy nexus.

Sounds like everyone thinks Wind is going to get better reception soon but I'm not really sure about that. I'm hesitating because I'm not sure what the reception will be like inside the buildings at UBC.

With that kind of plan, good luck keeping your credits, let alone adding to them.

Find a buddy who's got Wind at UBC, or failing that just see if there's someone who lives out that way who can wander through the buildings.


As far as "getting better reception soon", it's actually quite good. If you're a UBC student now, you probably don't remember Fido a decade ago, but it's very similar. And with the missed-call texts and UBC's wifi coverage, it shouldn't be a problem for you to get coverage wherever you are!
