too much gestures is a bad thing ... sometimes i dont want to be holding the phone in one and and constantly swiping with my thumb... i just want to tap and go

Still prefer physical keyboard on a Berry....its what makes a berry a berry
Hope they release the physical keyboard unit at the same time as this touch model

What defines a BlackBerry is their physical keyboard. Hope they aren't focusing too much on touchscreen and ignoring what made them so successful in the past.

DanHibiki 12-15-2012 01:52 PM

But what made them so successful eventually lead to their downfall as the majority of customers moved on to touchscreens.

I believe the days of even a bb physical keyboard phone are gone.

I believe it also had a lot to do with product life cycle. The BBOS is a mature OS and there's only so much you can do with each new iteration. In BBOS's case, major overhauls were not possible, only bug fixes. Normally, sales for a mature product tend to trail off as it becomes stale. This is where a company needs to innovate and create new products or risk becoming irrelevant - hence BB10. And it also didn't help that the OS was built around messaging, email, and phone calls - not a consuming device for browsing, touch, etc.

In any case, for those still wanting a physical keyboard RIM's got one of those in the works too (with the new BB10 OS) coming out after the full touch - dubbed the N-Series. The pic below might not be what it actually looks like in the end, but it's something.

I can only see a keyboard phone work if it slides out or something. How can you have enough screen real estate at the same time a keyboard at the bottom like the old bb bolds?

Since phones now are also media devices, phones like the mock up one on the right of that picture would not work these days.

I personally still use my phone as a work device, reading and responding to emails.
And I find that I can type a lot faster using a physical key board.
As for screen real estate, I really have no desire to watch TV, or movies on my phone....if I needed a device for that I would invest in a tablet.

I think BB still needs to produce a phone for its corporate clientel.
While some companies are moving towards Iphones, and Androids for their corporate phones.....many are still sticking with BB for their simplicity and practicality.

I do think BB need to come out with a more multimedia based tablet that traditional BB owners can purchase as an accessory to their Berry....so ye a revamped Playbook..maybe in a 10" format?

Yah I see what you're saying, that's why I have a slider that I use for work and a playbook tablet for whatever else. But I, (like skiipi above) find I am only on my phone for non work related stuff when I want to do a quick search or to kill some time waiting. Otherwise, I use the tablet.

Also, I think RIM tried to remedy that issue (way back when) by making the playbook work in bridge mode with your berry and making it 7" so it'd be easy to carry around. But, it was released on a half baked OS and missing some critical features. Nowadays, I hear the bridge feature works quite well, you can even send and receive texts through the playbook and BBM now has voice calling over wifi too.

i think those look great

if they had good cameras i may even make a switch sooner than later

I'm pretty sure the bb10 will be more suitable for business minded people ie the larger screen, html5, bb10 hub, optional qwerty, etc.

I would love to have BBM voice right now, I heard nothing but good reviews from my friends. Unfortunately I'm using an iphone 5 and I'm relying on dell voice, which sucks because it cuts off quite a bit eh:(

DanHibiki 12-15-2012 10:56 PM

I actually love gestures more than pressing buttons. Anyone notice you can swipe up or down to close a photo in the Facebook app? I LOVE that feature and wish it was OS standard. Also the "swiping from the left to reveal the menu" has become pretty standard in most apps now.

I don't think they should go overboard with gestures as it will defeat the whole purpose of keeping things simple. But including a few that makes sense in people's eyes would be nice.

One of my favourite jailbreak tweaks on the iPhone is to swipe from the bottom to reveal the multitasking tray. You can also make it so if u swipe all the way up it closes the app.

We will soon get a preview of how the Blackbery10 QWERTY keyboard device will look when they release the developer device C.

twstd_reality 12-16-2012 06:12 PM

^^ wouldn't be surprised if they just stick it in a bold 9900 shell to fool people. Though the screen size would need to be 1:1 so devs know what they're working with.

What I'd like to see is the bb10 working in landscape mode. I've yet to see any videos or pics of this.

English speak is language not well, yes?

I'm curious to see the phone(s) in a little over a month, once they finally unveil. If the "leaks" are any indication, BB10 should be a beautiful OS/platform moving forward, for RIM.

knight604 12-17-2012 09:23 PM
