That said - don't cheap put on boots and no "shorties". :)

SMX-5 is a pretty solid choice.
it's a "generation" old so price should be pretty low
they're comfortable, come pretty far up your shin

+1 the SMX-5 is a nice boots brother has the same ones the only problem he had was 1 of the toe sliders fell off they are replaceable though

Yep. Before I started riding CharlieH told me a story about how he would've lost a foot to getting sideswiped by an X5 without his boots. As someone that appreciates the nuances of having feet in the correct location, I always ride with boots on. The important thing is to have a steel plate inside the sole along the bottom that extends to cover your heels. I wear either my Puma Desmos or my Dianese Dynos (short rides).

I went to 1st Gear Motorcycle School in Richmond. Great group of instructors, highly recommended. Their schedule also worked better than PRS, consisting of theory on Thursday at 7:30PM til 10:30PM, parking lot then theory Saturday 9AM til 4:30PM, then more theory, parking lot, and MSA Sunday 9AM til 4:30PM. You can then do two practice road rides at your own convenience, just give them a heads up a day in advance and they'll fit you in if there's room.

As I said before, the instructors were great. They hammer knowledge and technique into you. They don't make it easy but they provide lots of support. At the end of the day, they want you to become a safe rider. On Sunday at about 2:30PM they let people practice for and do their MSA. At their advice, I did mine before 3PM as if you fail the first time, they can retest you again an hour later. I did fail my first MSA after stupidly leaving my bike in 2nd gear before my 2nd high (25 km/h) speed test and stalling twice, but retested an hour later and passed with a big fat zero demerits.

One big pro of 1st Gear over the others is that 1st Gear has five types of bikes: CBR 125R sport, Rebel 250 cruiser, Nighthawk 250 standard, Yamaha XT225 dual sport, and brand new to their fleet as soon as they get it insured, a Grom monkeybike. They encourage you to ride all of them to figure out which bike you like best. Like PRS, they supply all the riding gear for the MSA course except boots, bring your own boots.

1st Gear is a spin off from Pro Ride in North Vancouver, there's also PRS which everyone mentions and is a great school. I think at the end of the day, you pick your school based on location and schedule. 1st Gear is in Richmond which may be super convenient to a lot of you. I live in Surrey and chose 1st Gear over PRS simply due to scheduling, and I do not regret it one bit. 1st Gear costs $699 + tax. They have an option where you can put down $300 at first and then pay the rest the week before class.

Just took the Husky in for servicing. Getting the clutch replaced, full maintenance and removing the dual sport tires and replacing them with Michelin Pilot Powers. Paid $150 for the pair, so couldn't say no. Plus I don't plan on dual sporting the bike to much. Maybe next season.

Lol I traded in a CBR 250R I took out for the road ride last Saturday with Grumbles to give someone else a chance to try the 250 out. Lionel warned me they nicknamed it Grumbles, I was thinking why. Then first rev on it, ohhhhh. But I also grew fond of Grumbles.

It was a deal Jake Wilson had back in November. I should have bought 2 sets.

So I was riding home on 160 St. When I noticed a crowd off the side of the road the other way including a Ninja 600. I turned around to see if everything was ok and they asked if I could lend a screwdriver which I pulled out from my bike. The guy tried to loosen up the front brake. Then I noticed the rider had a 3 square inch portion of skin torn off his hand and also his jeans on the same side torn and more skin off there and realized this guy went down. Apparently his brakes suddenly locked up without him touching it, enough to lock up that front wheel, and down he went.

Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I was down at the brakes looking for anything that may have somehow caught and got stuck in there. I don't see how the brakes could've locked up that badly by itself otherwise. The guy also has aftermarket handlebars and he said it did have some lock up problems before.

Also a reminder to everyone, ATGATT. This guy was just a block away from his house when he went down. He slid far enough that about half an inch of brake lever and handlebar was gouged right off, it's lucky he didn't lose more than just skin.

Damn. Good on you for pulling over and lending a hand. Atgatt, I had to look that up. Yeah this is a very good rule to LIVE by.

I went to 1st Gear this morning as I wasn't able to make it for their afternoon road ride after all but I had the morning free. They let me take their brand new Grom out for a little while before class started. What a fun little toy. It's like my old BWS, but with way more power. The air cooled 125 doesn't quite have the high end power the water cooled unit in my CBR 125R has (I mean, "power") but it has more low end grunt and is faster up to 60km/h. No wonder you see guys able to pop wheelies on them. The air cooled unit is there as there is literally no room to put a water cooled unit in there, but I wonder if they could add a bit more ccs in it and bump the HP rating to maybe 13 in the future?

I got the Grom to top out at 96km/h indicated on the Knight Street Bridge, and it was able to keep up with traffic just fine but I only got the guts to pass one car at that top speed. It'll seems like it'll cruise an honest 80km/h all day so around the city with very short stints on the freeway say to cross a bridge, or out on a secondary highway for a cruise, it's a great little bike.

Went for a long ass ride on the grom today. Started at 12 in Poco, ended up at Harrison around 2:30 all back roads, got home around 7, even had few 49cc's with us.. Great day for a ride.

Were any of you guys in the pack of what I think were mostly Grom's on the backroads of Mission Saturday evening? I missed my turn because I was looking at them all stopped.

Yup, that was us. But it was actually 2 groms, 4 x 49cc scooters, Aprilla 125, Suzuki V-strom 650, and the CRB400 showed up to cruise back with us.

I have a buddy selling his Grom w/ over $1k in mod for $3500 Firm. Anyone interested?
