So I've got a quick question for you guys. Girlfriend wants to get her bike on the road for the early summer. Budget is pretty tight. She has an '86 gsxr-400 if i remember correctly. It's in pretty good shape overall, but has been in storage for a few years. I have many, many years of automotive skill under my belt, as well as a full frame off ruckus build. But I do not have much experience working on bikes.

So, do you think an avid mechanically inclined guy such as myself should be able to bring it up to riding condition? Draining gas tank, changing fuel lines, oil changes, tuning carbs, lubing chain are things i shouldn't have difficulty in. As well as checking brake and general driveline condition. As for new tires though (as I'm sure the DOT's will be hella old) i would obviously need to take to a shop.

Thoughts, suggestions? Tackle the tune up myself? Or bite the bullet and take it in. Budget is a factor

I would do it myself.

me and my brother have been able to do all the work on his bike by ourselves (replacing chain, sprockets, rewiring lights, replacing clutch cable etc..) at home other then getting the new tires on the rim and balanced. We took the old tires in and had them replace and balance the tires and installed them ourselves.

For future reference for other people out there, it helps a lot if you have the owners manual and the great thing about the internet is that now most of these manuals are available in pdf format online. There's exploded diagrams, to torque specs contained within the pdf owners manuals but unfortunately I think 320icar's issue will be one of those exceptions this time being an 80's vehicle.

Biggest problem is that it's grey market. Never sold stateside so most manuel's (que?) will probably be in Japanese.

Carbs probably need cleaning if not a rebuild. Problem is at that age all the rubber and plastic parts are probably fairly brittle and/or cracking. Be careful not to do something like damage a carb boot and create a vacuum leak, if there isn't one already. Parts are also likely hard to find and might be pricey.
You should do it if needed, but be aware of potential downtime and cost ahead of time. If its running ok now might be better to leave them alone if you don't want to put in the money.
Calipers and master might also need a rebuild and again parts can be pricey and hard to find. Check the fork seals too.

i have an earlier year of the same bike. if you're careful, cleaning the carbs is easy.
as long as you don't separate them from each other you shouldn't need to balance them either. unless it runs like a wet bag of poo.

the rest is pretty generic to a bike in general.

the things that were a bitch on mine were getting the tubes for the intake to air box connection on and putting the exhaust back on without dropping one or more of the multipiece exhaust gaskets lol.
