I also used some Chinese guys the last time I moved locally, cheap quote, paid them cash, give them an $20 pp tip ... they worked hard, no questions. Just don't pick a couple of white guys who need a 15 mins break every hour.

I don't think most Chinese movers are insured - that's the risk you're running for the lower price. You'll need to go full chinawoman on them though if they break your glass staircase.

Quite a few years ago when I moved, the Chinese movers I hired actually went through the trouble of wrapping up some of my big furniture with bubble wrap, and then further wrapping those mover-sized cling wraps around to secure everything in place. I was actually surprised.

Still, they ended up scuffing up like 2 of my walls at the new place. I didn't / can't complain cuz I know that if I were to do the moving myself, I would have caused a lot more damage at both the old and new places. If the move was done with a proper western company, I suppose I can probably ask for some sort of compensation?

^it's still hit or miss. I was crossing South Granville street one day and there was a western moving company truck that turned left to go up the hill. Heard this big shattering sound as it was turning and the driver let out a big and long :fuuuuu:

I helped a friend move and we already pre-packed and pre-wrapped as much as we could. The movers still had trouble with the big pieces by scratching up floors and walls at his new place, and gave my friend attitude when he hawked over them afterwards. The head office charged him for packing materials (which he provided) and tried to nickel and dime him despite the workers creating damage.

Finding good movers is hard - probably best to do as much of it yourself as you can and only leave the big pieces for the movers.

I've used Metro Van Movers https://metrovanmovers.com) a couple times and they've been pretty professional but my wife felt they were slow which is what my wife thinks of all movers - I would have used them again. Guys were polite and took good care of things.

Also used Crown Mountain (https://www.crownmountainmovers.com) for my last move and they were fine as well though they underestimated how much stuff needed to be moved and needed to call in help (they never did an onsite estimate). Crew was mostly young guys with a couple vets who directed the work. Very polite, only broke 1 thing (and we had a lot of things).

If you want all business pros that have little in bedside manners then Zero Gravity movers is worth a look. They are not the most cheerful but they work very fast, don't charge much, and know what they are doing. I had some uninsured chinese movers help me move during COVID, $200 after tip for a 800sq ft move, those prices are probably long gone lol.

I paid the cheapest price possible and they scratched my floors and dented my walls?!?!?! How dare they!!!

It's hard to gauge which moving companies are reasonable since most people don't use them often. Google will only serve up those who are good with SEO, and there's no comparison site to shop moving companies and find a reputable one.

In my case, I minimized the risk of damage as much as possible, picked a moving company, and crossed my fingers. The company I chose sounded professional up until the people showed up at the door. I suspected they were contracted from the company I called, and confirmed that was the case when the movers themselves mentioned the wrong moving company they were representing lol.

I worked at uhaul a decade ago

One time a moving "company" rented a truck in the AM, returned it in the PM.
4 or 3 dudes, one being the owner or boss.

When the truck was returned, I could hear guys arguing outside, "well the customer did not pay me, so how can I pay you guys!?!"
I proceed to look over, and about 20 seconds later, the three guys are shit kicking the boss on the ground.
I got my popcorn out, meanwhile my manager is running out de escalating the situation.
