So is it based on zoning? Wouldn't data center just be generic warehouse? But with crazy power supply

The really big data centers are most likely all purpose built, most of them are discrete buildings you won't even realize are data centers. Security is a big deal. The cooling requirements are a big deal.

If they can put a data center in any old warehouse, it's probably not gonna be that important.

Badhobz 11-20-2025 08:04 AM

As Evo mentioned, you can't have whatever building to be data centers. They have very high requirement for security (both hard and soft) and the power requirement is insane. Not only that, for the most part, tier 1 DC want redundancy on everything. Most run their own set of backup generators with some of the new ones having their own grid-scale battery backup (think Tesla Megapack) in addition to diesel generators with built-in oil tanks.

And zoning does come into play. You need to have the land that allows them to incorporate all these stuff into while minimizing the natural human traffic. Generally speaking, you don't want to put it in a building where there are multi-tenants allowing access for other people. You want everything as tight and secluded as possible.

Yes, there is still DC in say middle of Manhattan, but those are more old school. The modern ones are usually built in the middle of nowhere.

But then again, they can't be too nowhere because you want connectivity to all the major tier one players. We don't think much as users when it comes to where the actual DC is located as long as we can get our data. But for physical DC, routing is a big deal and usually they'd want direct connection to as many tier 1 enterprise carriers (in US is Level3, NTT, ATT, Verizon... etc and Canada is Shaw/BigPipe/Rogers, Bell... etc) and hyperscalers (Amazon AWS, MS Azure, Google, Netflix... etc) or else routing agreements can get very expensive very quickly.

In short, it's hard to build a DC. But if one could pull it off, the demand is insatiable. From what I know, they have waitlists of 4+ yrs for tier 1 DCs. This is why many major companies have shifted to AWS/Azure/Google Cloud. Because it's super hard to find one unless you have the funding to build one your own.

If no one else is going to say it I will, Badhobz, your use of "chug" and other terms needs to stop. No need to go that route and it's classless.

You use the N-word too?

JDMDreams 11-20-2025 09:39 AM

As a Chinese, I think it's inevitable to say the n-word on a daily basis.

Meh, if you're offended, fine.

I'll just say it in my head and look down upon them while they spin in a circle and bang on a stupid drum and call that dancing.

There's no need to use racist, derogatory terms here.

Unrelated fact: In high school, we put on a student-led lunch time event called a chugging contest where we would have contestants down a bottle of tonic water. Whoever could down a bottle would win a prize.

The event was shut down by our principal because it was advertised across the school as a "Chugging Contest" and we had a sizeable Indigenous student population.

lol I was thinking the end of the story was that the indigenous students won the contest.

bcrdukes 11-20-2025 11:13 AM

I recall 4 out of 10 participants were Indigenous students.

We meant well but clearly our decision was misguided.

i think he's referring to the N word sounding like a different common word in mandarin. kind of how it ni-ga literally means you + particle in korean.

I would legitimately love to live in a totem pole.

Worst part about getting married was that I can't do anything fun anymore.

Badhobz 11-20-2025 12:36 PM

which animal spirit would you live in? bear? eagle? beaver? i bet its the beaver.

But were you really any fun before you got married?

Traum 11-20-2025 01:05 PM

By "can't do anything fun anymore", I think RabidRat just means he can't go out to bang random chicks during ONS anymore lol~

Residential units would command nowhere the rent of commercial.

Usually speaking, in CRE, we focus on the cashflow or the rent that it provides. Maybe CRE doesn't grow faster than RE in bull market, but if one's holding long term, there are a lot of things you can do with the cashflow of rent that you can't otherwise do with residential.

We have one commercial building with 4 2 bedroom rental units above. The 2 bedrooms have more than doubled in 10 years. the commercial units have about stayed the same.

As for data centers. They are building one in Nanaimo and the uneducated nimby's are complaining about it. Complaining about how much water it will use.

Lol what? I'd imagine the DC would be on closed loop systems if it's for cooling. It's not a nuclear reactor.
