Angel cellular at Admirality Center in Richmond had cases the afternoon of the delivery date. I got a case and screen protector for $25. I returned the Apple Smart Cover the day after.

$55. Quite expensive but that looks even better than the one above.

Went today and didn't like any of those cases. They all felt terribly made, really. The Smart Cover is a quality product despite the price diff.

Haven't really found one that I like - I'm just using the cheap one until i find something that I really like.

a retina version is the rumor right now - but then who wasn't expecting that...

JesseBlue 11-11-2012 10:30 PM

A hi-res screen and $329 would be worth it.

Iceman_2K 11-12-2012 05:15 PM

I somehow doubt that it will be that cheap. With Samsung hiking up the price on processors in general for Apple, its going to be hard to say what the prices for Apple products are going to be in the near future. If Tim's been doing his job right, they should be able to slide another semi-conductor manufacturer in to produce the necessary number of chips.

I must admit, whether a retina version is released in the future isn't a concern for me at this point - having gone from a first gen ipad to the mini, I like what the mini gives me in terms of size and speed. At 64 gigs, unless they increase the storage space, i doubt that i'm going to be swapping devices for a while.

Ronin 11-12-2012 06:34 PM

Apple is cutting Samsung off in the near future. They've already moved display manufacturing to Sharp, LG and another Japanese manufacturer. Processors will be designed internally and I'm sure there's somewhere else capable of manufacturing that isn't Samsung.

Storage space is irrelevant to me, really since I don't store any music on my iPad and few videos. Apps take no space, really.

Carried my mini in my pocket all day today and it didn't feel like anything out of the ordinary.

Actually, its Samsung that is opting out of providing displays for Apple.

Samsung has already officially denied the LCD rumor, though it still keeps circulating.

As to the price hike, Apple has a contract with Samsung which very likely is carefully worded and airtight for both parties (based on comments from various Apple suppliers and their dealings with Apple over the years). One thing Apple does is aggressively negotiate prices based on volume (which is common in any industry).

It's more a case of blogs looking for a sensationalist headline. "Samsung jacking prices" sounds better than "Apple discount lowered due to reduced volume purchases."

Regardless, the rumored 20% increase for processors represents about $3-4 in the cost of an iPhone or iPad. I doubt Apple is going to argue that, especially if Samsung can produce their chips fast enough.

Ronin 11-12-2012 07:51 PM

Apple margins are huge enough that a 20% increase on one part isn't going to kill their profit.

Iceman_2K 11-12-2012 08:07 PM

Probably not. Getting back to Ronin's comment about carrying the thing around all day - I've been carrying it around all week in the pocket of my coat and its not really noticeable, if at all. Its small, light and fits really well.

I do keep a lot of videos and music on my mini, since its replaced my ipods and ipod touch, and to a great extent, my Macbook as well. Where i woulda brought the Macbook, I'm now just relying on the mini, and its done pretty well so far.

I just realized I've been on RS for 11 years....wow.....

Ronin 11-12-2012 08:20 PM

So you plug your headphones into your iPad and listen to music?

Iceman_2K 11-12-2012 08:36 PM

Yup - I use a headphone amp from FiiO with my Audio Technica's to listen to music while I work, and then use the usb cable to connect the mini to my car while I drive home. AT this point, my iphone is doing a hell of a lot more tethering then it was previously doing, since i use the mini a lot more because of its size. I also make use of it during meetings to take notes using the Muji Notebook app.

Anyone's iPad have trouble maintaining a connection to the internet on wifi?
Every now and then it disconnects and I'll have to go to settings and turn wifi off and back on again. Sometimes it'll hold but sometimes it'll cut out again in less than 5 minutes. Even when it is unable to connect, the wifi symbol shows that the connection is strong.

My laptop doesn't have any trouble maintaining a connection over wifi at home, so I don't think it's the router/modem's problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
