How long do you need to press your finger on the scanner for? Is more than 3 seconds? Posted via RS Mobile |
Watch some stuff on youtube. It's much faster than that. looks like 0.5s. |

After 3 failed fingers it will ask for #. |
I got the iPhone 5S for my wife and my brother in TW. TouchID works flawlessly. I tried probably over 10 times, and each time it was able to recognize the print within a sec. You just rest your finger on it as you were about to press the home button, and voila. The phone is amazingly fast. Everything just flows smoothly even with all the crap my wife has on her iPhone. Overall a very solid phone. But Apple needs to open up the TouchID to really show the potential of the new feature. Otherwise it will become a gimmick. |

I'm sure I've missed this in the thread but can you have more than one person input their fingerprint? Or can it only be one? |

From a 4 or 4S, definitely. I guess you could say the 5S is probably the most futureproof iPhone ever released. When Siri was released for the 4S it was a useless POS. Only after 2 years after it's release is it finally useful. I imagine this fingerprint tech will take 1.5-2years to again mature and reach a point where it is useful for all.. As for now, just unlocking a phone, etc, it's just a cute feature. It's funny how we are too lazy to enter a passcode. It takes about the same time to enter. |

Once those problems iron out, it would be very useful for not only protection, but ultimately recognition of users. If this lands correctly on i-device, it could be awesome. No more I have to stand my wife's music in my iPad. But then again I'm sure all android manufacturers would have something like TouchID by next refresh. |

I'm just hoping they do something revolutionary like move the headphone jack to the top of the phone. |

Might as well not ever bother to invent new technology since "it's just going to get hacked anyway". Quote:

Guy uses his cat's paw to "train" the Touch ID sensor and then uses it to unlock his iPhone. Cat's paw Unlock Apparently someone also trained their penis, though I'm not gonna bother searching for that one. I think Tim Cook let something slip in his Business Week interview (they just published the entire transcript). Quote:

I suppose they could have it so it uses a data connection to log into a server run by the store, but that would be unreliable and slow. Good for a backup system if an NFC system goes down or something though. |

When I read it I think "in other words, you haven't really come up with anything new." For example, why would I tap my smartphone with NFC on a POS terminal when I can just as easily tap the credit or debit card I already have with me? Google themselves don't heavily promote Google Wallet as a contactless payment system utilizing NFC - they're pushing it more as an online payment system. Most of the information at their developer site is related to online payments. I don't see Apple as just making a system that works with existing systems as there's no real benefit to them (no money to be made). Rather than deal with payment processors and modifying their iPhones to work with existing terminals I think Apple is going to become the payment processor themselves and your iPhone will be the terminal. Apple could make a small dumb terminal available to merchants and the smarts (and security) are done inside your personal device. Payments would go from Apple directly to the merchant after being authorized by you and the "dumb" terminal in store would provide the "authorization code/receipt" to prove to the merchant they got their money. Why would merchants install another terminal? Because Apple would charge them lower fees than what they currently pay. Apple holds the world's largest database of account holders with credit cards (surpassing even PayPal or Amazon). It's approaching half a billion CC's. I don't know what Apple pays for fees to process credit cards, but it's a given that with their volume they've negotiated a great rate (far lower than any merchant ever could - unless you're Walmart or Target). They could charge small businesses a lower rate than they could get on their own while still making a cut of every purchase. As for how to make the purchase, you could simply "bump" your iPhone against this terminal (or contact pad). The accelerometer in your iPhone detects this bump and immediately sends a Bluetooth request to the terminal which immediately responds. The entire exchange would only take a few milliseconds. The "bump" is timestamped and the timestamp is part of the encryption. This way if some criminal is trying to "snoop" the Bluetooth spectrum and record data of transactions they won't get anything useful since it's basically a one-time use code. Since the 4S came with BT 4.0 Apple already has a large installed base of devices that could do payments this way. This may sound odd, but Apple already does this. You can "bump" your Apple TV with your iPhone and a very short Bluetooth connection is made which transfers useful information (WiFi SSID/password and Apple Store account ID/password) from your iPhone to your Apple TV to provide a "one bump setup" of a new Apple TV. Of course Apple could do something completely different. But it's not hard to imagine a few possible (and easily implemented) scenarios that differ from current systems. |
i just got mine, silver (my buddy told me the champagne was gorgeous, but i think champagne is perfect for girls) paid $1400usd to be the first in Nha Trang lol, i must say, not bad, the ios7 is smooth with the new chip, camera is so much better, and the fingerprint feature is fucking awesome, it scans it immediately, like what liquidturbo said: 0.5s , you register your print one way, but you can scan it diagonally and such, it doesn't need to be exact finger placement new ringtones and alerts and wallpapers, but the dynamic wallpapers suck balls, those lazy bastards give you like 6 options of the exact same shit, cept different colors like 5c, i wouldn't suggest anyone get it right away, should wait a few weeks for the price to drop dramatically, but you should upgrade, it's a nice phone i'm using the S4 as well and i prefer the ios7 over android os, it's smooth as chocolate x-lax http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps7eb43d61.jpg http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/x...psbd1fcf25.jpg http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps233cce71.jpg |

Someone in Germany (CCC) has unlocked an iPhone using the "fake finger" technique and posted a short video. However they won't qualify for the $20K prize since they only showed the unlock portion and not a complete beginning-to-end video of the entire process to prove continuity. So the prize is still up for grabs for anyone who wants to try. Lomac? Posted via RS Mobile |
