Model Y is pretty hard to beat if you want to go EV.

Its cargo space is class leading and really just about every design detail makes sense and super practical IRL. They might not be perfect, but one could easily relate the design choices.

Ioniq 5 back seat is better imo, but its relative limited cargo space, charging network vs. the Model Y make it hard for most people to pick it over the Y. I'm not sure if everyone has seen the Model Y trunk and frunk, they are both massive for a vehicle in its class. And that's super important for many of my friends who have kids or want a car that can deal with their day-to-day errands like running to Costco, carry this and that... etc.

Here's a 2023 Tesla Model Y base RWD certified preowned direct from the Tesla website, 33,000km for $40,000 which is priced pretty low

You can finance it at 4.99%, just saw the listing now, definitely going to be gone by tomorrow.

The biggest downside is that you need to put down a $250 non refundable deposit, and it's sight unseen.

In the US, 2025 Ioniq 5s come with a NACS port and can charge at Tesla superchargers. Canadian vehicles still come with a CCS port for now, but can (or will be able to) do the same using an adapter.

The back seat area is indeed really spacious.

I will admit - my biggest knock against the I5 is the cargo space. The trunk is quite small, and I don't even bother with the frunk (perhaps bigger in non-AWD models). My sister in law has a 2024 MY and I am jealous of her frunk! But they have encountered some verbal abuse regarding their vehicle...

The other major risk for I5 owners is ICCU failure, where repairs could take months depending on part availability.

RWD trunk is just as small. Fits a laptop or the adapters for charging.

Ioniq charges so slowly at NACS station that it’s really a cost saving/emergency scenario. It averages 180kw on CCS for 18 minutes to 80% and 105 on NACS Superchargers for 30mins.

That said, either is faster than Tesla.

Should I be surprised that Tesla is still building new big sales / service center in Vancouver?

I know their global sales is dropping. Even US sales have dropped a lot. But Vancouver has always sung a different tune than the rest of Canada and N.America when it comes to cars.

Gas prices high enough in Vancouver/California & enough detached homes and chargers that people will adopt.

Fast charging in rest of Canada is so barren compared to like 50+ superchargers in every Metro Vancouver town. Instead of 250 fast chargers, Calgary has like 20.

Two family's worth of Teslas since 2021 with over 200000 kms racked on them. We rarely have to public charge, literally like maybe once a year if we go on a road trip. Squamish and back is fine, only if you go a bit further out like down to alder wood. 120v is more than enough, with maybe 240v once a month if you're driving more than normal. All you have to do is to tell the car to charge to full a day or two before your trips if you think you will be driving more like over a weekend.

Charging is not an issue unless you are a condo dweller

And there's a reason why Model Y is the best selling vehicle of any kind. I don't think I have met anyone who got a Model Y and hate it. Things like lack of physical buttons, speedos... etc, you just eventually get used to. But in the same time, so do all the benefits such as no longer need a physical key, remote control many aspect of the car, charging at home... etc.

Also the space is very well thought out. Many of people who I know who have a Model Y are families. And they love the fact that they got like 99% of the utility of a minivan, without having to drive a minivan.

Is fine for most people, Whistler is fine round trip even in the cold.

I almost exclusively drive for road trips - Vancouver <> Seattle round trip in a day, SF <> Tahoe, Boston <> DC. You really notice the slow charging & crap suspension even on refreshed 3/Y

I drive EV for this shit cuz it’s smooth and comfier, esp Lucid. The cost savings is the bonus.

It's just funny you're always flying in to ensure you defend Tesla as a brand, I do think you have an odd parasocial relationship with Elon Musk.

I think most people who didn't like or hate the Model Y wouldn't have gone ahead with the purchase, so I expect most Model Y owners to at least like the car. And for those who grew to hate the car, I imagine they changed to another car as soon as that was financially feasible.

This brings up my mom's Model Y ownership experience. She didn't hate the car, but she did get another car shortly after because the whole driving experience was a bit too foreign. For someone who typically stays committed to the same car for 10+ years, the sudden change was quite telling.

Our of curiousity, what did your friends imagine they'd need a minivan for if a Model Y fit their utility needs? The Model Y has the frunk and the bottom partition in the trunk advantage over a similar-sized vehicle, but it's still no match for a minivan for people-hauling and storage IMO.

Probably the same ppl like my mom who needs that space maybe twice a year, but would like it nonetheless.

We bought the X5 because it's the right amount of space for us and we cram the car full multiple times a year (camping x2, Whistler, Parksville, and one more trip potentially this year). Yet my mom is insisting we get a X7 or a Sienna because we might take more than 4 ppl twice a year.

I do however agree with Hehe that the Model Y is hard to beat if you discount all the BS with Elon Musk and his political BS. With a similar footprint as a X3/GLC/Q5 it can carry a lot more loose junk with the frunk and under storage, particular with the frunk if you want isolation with whatever you are carrying. The only bit it loses by is the slope back design which hurts large item portability. But only the X3 has a more squared off design, neither the GLC or Q5 is particularly good in that sense.

RZD makes some really strong arguments that charging speed which was a strong point for Teslas has now been downgraded to one of it's weaker points. But that doesn't take into account that most people do not use public charging. Though it does hurt the long range credibility of a Tesla, especially for a niche use case like mine with little kids.

^^ yes but you're playing stupid dealer to remotely get a van that you will want to own. What's there to buy, gas Odyssey? Toyota games for a sienna? Do they even make pacificas anymore. A kia carnival? Do you really want to whip that around + pay for gas. You're getting an outdated product.

That's fair, and I understand the desire to want more than needed. I assumed people generally stick to the same body style and size up if they need more space. If larger SUVs still can't fit their needs, then they settle for a minivan.

Anyhow I have nothing against the Model Y's capabilities and features - it delivers great value and the facelift addresses many of the pre-facelift's criticisms on build quality and ride comfort.

Hehe is right about the Model Y frunk and software superiority but just as much utility as a minivan is laughable. It's like those that try to justify the 7-seat option for the Model Y, or the backseat of the beetle/SC430. If they made the Model X into a proper large SUV like rivian/lucid or a minivan instead of that gullwing monstrosity it'll would've sold much better.

I think the odyssey is a good bargain right now for minivans, much cheaper than sienna. You'll have to burn a lot of gas to make up for the hybrid savings.

Tesla is shaping up to have a pretty miserable 2025 all around, and the bad news just keeps on coming. According to a recent report by JATO Dynamics analyst Felipe Munoz, the Model Y was dethroned in 2024 as the world's best-selling car, usurped by the Toyota RAV4 courtesy of an 11% year-over-year jump for the Toyota SUV, alongside a 3% decline for the Model Y. The silver lining for Tesla is that both vehicles were incredibly close, with Tesla only an estimated 2,000 purchases below the RAV4's estimated 1,187,000.

Damn, still impressive by only 2,000 units behind the RAV4....

I see it as an absolute win.

And we are talking about best selling vehicle, not best selling EV, I am no Tesla Fan Boy, but damn...
