I'm still gonna wear a mask for the next little while because what else am I going to do with the inventory that I have accumulated over the past year? Might as well use them up somehow LOL~ |

Casinos opening July 1st. Masks required. Even if they weren't required, I'd wear one. Got emails about the openings last week from various casinos. |
Walmart/Costco? Mask for sure. The local quiet veggie mart? No mask unless they’re packed for some reason. |
dont care, open the fucking border |
A year and a half in I've found the journey to wearing masks here in Canada fascinating. Being Chinese it's nothing new to me seeing people wear masks for years when they are sick. From the very start pre lockdown a lot of Asians were already wearing them by default. It was an adjustment but by no means weirded me out. For me wearing one it was new but didn't bug me. I joked with my white coworkers way before they were recommended and being mandatory that I'll be concerned when I start seeing white people wear it because at that point I knew that the whole world has finally taken this serious enough. Fast forward now restrictions aside I'm probably going to keep the habit of wearing masks for a long time perhaps even forever. It doesn't mean I'm going to be wearing masks when indoors forever but in hind sight there are certain places where now it just seems funny thinking we didn't pre pandemic. For example wearing one when you're at the doctors absolutely to me makes sense and it's crazy to think we didn't before lol. I'm really curious what industries will just keep the policy of wearing masks for a long time. Cooks and servers? Makes sense to me now, would it be normal practice going forward? Pre COVID you already had certain companies who handle food already wear masks by default, not so much in a restaurant but some of those good production companies. We'll see! |
Cooks and servers will definitely not continue to wear masks when the go ahead is given. As you said, it makes sense to wear masks if you’re sick. If you’re sick, you shouldn’t be at work. If you’re not sick, you shouldn’t need to wear a mask when there isn’t a pandemic putting the entire world at risk. The logic of wearing a mask as a server but not wearing a mask at a hockey game or concert doesn’t line up. |
I've been happy to be a part of the solution, and will continue to wear masks for businesses that want me to, but beyond that I'm ready to take this new vaccine out for a spin and let my immune system stretch its legs. There's very few times of the year where I'm in what I consider to be a "crowded" place where it just seems gross to be around so many people so I think I'll live. |

I’ve sent home cooks dozens of times in my career. And yes the GM has sent home servers as well. I’ve certainly worked places that didn’t, but that obviously has to change with the way the world works now. That said, it’s also a personal responsibility for people who are feeling sick to make that decision. I’m not going to send someone home who feels fine but I see them cough once or twice in a shift. |
I was only there for an hour or so, but everybody working there seemed to treat each other like family - lots of respect. I don't think any of them would show up for work if they suspected they had Covid. I loved how the owner kept making sure everybody was happy - both workers and customers alike. Definitely not a "restaurant chain" type of atmosphere. I went alone and that was a good thing. I had the opportunity to see all the goings on in that place. I'm super glad places like this still exists. But, the food.......... WOW! I'm going back, 'cause there's so many items to choose from. Wait....... this is about Covid...... sorry. Not the right thread. Oops.......... damn, westopher. You are a master at multitasking? Also, me slow. |

But on the server front, if someone had a choice between taking a sick day, or going into work only slightly sick and make hourly + tips, then I can certainly see them choosing the latter more times than not. |
You could say that about every hourly employee in any profession, which is why government mandated sick pay has become such a contentious issue. Restaurants aren’t some Wild West profession where there are no standards for the employees. Shitty ones maybe, but again, same as the shitty meat packing plants, shitty used car dealers, etc. It’s in everyone’s best interests that people don’t get sick in our establishment. If you’re worried about that, you aren’t frequenting places that have interest in professionalism, or you need to work on your trust. As I said, I’d be a lot more worried about the guy next to me at the hockey game or at the show at the commodore giving it to me than my server, but truthfully with the current situation, I’m not all that worried about any of it. |
Kinda embarrassing to admit, but I've always personally struggled with taking sick days... It might be my upbringing, or something. The whole idea of 'toughing it out' etc, and just go to work anyway. The only times I would take a sick day is if I have a fever or something that really impacts my ability to concentrate. I think part of it is I feel bad not getting any work done? Of course, with Covid now, and going forward, I'll definitely be more careful and mindful about risking other's health. --- A Random 'sick / illness' story of me still going to class (regrettably): Spoiler! |

At least now that everyone owns a bunch of masks hopefully more people will wear them to work/in public when they're feeling sick. I know I will be. |
My previous employer only had 3 sick days per year. I would use that up every year. Afterwards, I would continue to come to work despite feeling under the weather. My employer now gives me sick hours each paycheque and I've banked enough to take several months off, so I don't hesitate to use them if I feel anything coming on. |
Well that was fast, just went to my gym and I think it's was me and maybe 3 other people that had a mask on lol |
Does anyone think with the current rules it will be a disease of the poor and uneducated? Since they aren't forced to wear a mask anymore |
No. |
It was a disease of the poor and elderly to start with. Obviously being that marginalized communities and people are in low paying, front line jobs. Vaccines are the flame retardant in this fire fight at this point. There’s plenty of wealthy and educated people who are choosing not to use the tools given to them. Smart? Probably not. We know you want to say “I told you so” every time some sort of socialization is reintroduced, but the numbers are still declining as the vaccine uptake increases. |
