Plan the parade!

BlackV62K2 07-12-2021 04:37 PM

Looks like the Canucks will see Duncan Keith more now

How stupid can the Oilers keep being?

punkwax 07-12-2021 05:57 PM

Jim ain’t so dim now is he!?

Ok maybe he is LUL

Glad the Canucks dodged that bullet I almost thought about it for a second before my brain activated with a hard nope giving that potential thought absolutely zero chance to survive.

Inb4 Benning pulls off a trade for OEL to top Holland

mb_ 07-12-2021 09:06 PM

That's a good trade... about 8 years ago LOL

whitev70r 07-12-2021 09:06 PM

Reports say Keith wanted to be closer to his son. But Oilers got fleeced ... should have made Chicago eat some of the salary.

68style 07-12-2021 09:45 PM

They did, he’s only owed 3.6 total

But that cap hit for 2 years is crazy… that alone makes the deal unworkable for me in a flat cap era… hands are tied now

Blah_Teggie 07-12-2021 10:53 PM

Why is it a bad trade? You guys might not realize this, but the Oilers are in a win-now mode with 97 and 29 in the prime of their careers. The Oilers basically got swept out of the playoffs in round 1 2 years in a row. They've gone 1-7 in the past 2 playoffs. Something has to change. What better way than to bring in a guy who's won 3 Stanley Cups, 2 Olympic Gold Medals, 2 Norris Trophies and so on. That experience and leadership is PRICELESS! Keith has been thru the wars, he's been thru all the battles. They gave up peanuts to get him. The actual money isn't much. It's only the cap hit. But it's only for 2 years. Most importantly, Keith wants to go to Edmonton. Unlike most guys. He wants to be there. This trade IMO is a win for the Oilers.

whitev70r 07-13-2021 06:10 AM

^ I thought it was bad because of the salary but someone above stated that he is only owed $3.6M actual money but does take the full cap hit. So that's a plus and minus.

The other reason is because he has seriously declined in terms of performance but if you can get 2 decent years out of him and the locker room presence ... we'll see. He just doesn't have to be a liability, not like they need Keith to get a 50 pt season.

68style 07-13-2021 07:01 AM

^^ I see someone read the inflated Athletic article of Keith’s talents and abilities hehe

I think the things being talked about might be worth the salary price, but the cap hit is debilitating we only had “2 more seasons” of Loui Eriksson’s $6 mill cap hit to worry about too and it pretty much put this franchise in stasis waiting for it to end…

Giving up nearly 7% of your cap isn’t giving up peanuts, especially when you don’t have a legitimate goaltender. Things needed to change but more in the way Montreal brought in guys like Perry… aging dudes on 1 year contracts who know how to win… not a guy who just wants to be close to his kid. They need a Seth Jones type D to push them over the top and a legit goaltender… and better depth scoring… I’d say the Oilers are actually pretty far away from a Cup team to be honest. I know Nurse was a Norris candidate this year but his numbers are very inflated playing with McDavid on the ice. He’s got rocks in his head half the time, makes so many bonehead moves and passes.

High chance this blows up in Edmonton’s face, 37 and 38 are like Chelios ages to be playing D in the NHL no matter how well you skate…

RiceIntegraRS 07-13-2021 07:04 AM

Adding Keith to your existing defence will improve it. But not at the expense of losing Barrie or Larsson. Unless by some miracle they sign both guys, their defence had gotten worse. Yes, they didnt give up much to get him but they gave up cap space which is super important. I really hate when people start listing off accomplishments a player has had years and years ago in a league where its all about what you can do now. Every team brings in former Stanley cup winners to their roster but how often does it work out? If your all about past cup wins, maybe the Oilers should trade for Matt Murray. 100% sure the Senators will take anything for him. They would probably throw in a pick for u to take him or salary retained which is what the Oilers should of made chicago do.

Arent Holtby and Beagle past cup champions? How valuable are they do our team? We are trying to get rid of theses guys.

Expresso 07-13-2021 07:49 AM

He might do ok in a more sheltered 2nd/3rd pairing. He doesn't need to be THE guy anymore. The cap hit is bad though.

whitev70r 07-13-2021 07:56 AM

Suggestion for Ken Holland, Keith has an 'injury' ... put him on a LTIR for 3/4 of the season. Last 15 games or so, get him ready for the playoffs, which is why you got him. And save 3/4 of his $5M salary cap ... I know, not very original, been used before but it works.

The Kucherov experiment? lol

Hondaracer 07-13-2021 08:06 AM

When’s the last time you heard about Keith being an impact dman? 3 years ago?

This isn’t going to end well and given he obviously wanted out to be closer to his family, the hawks not picking up some of the cap hit is crazy

Another example.

I wonder if the Oilers will end up buying out Keith's contract.

whitev70r 07-13-2021 08:30 AM

^ WOW! I still remember Wild pulling off the heist in free agency to get those 2 guys, Suter and Parise .. are they done and over the hill.

Good pick ups for some team, since they got paid, maybe they will sign for veteran minimum. Go get them JB!

Heist? Wtf. I dont know about everyone else but i remember it being a massive overpayment for those 2.

68style 07-13-2021 01:07 PM

Can’t believe that era with all the 10+ year contracts, that won’t happen for anyone not named McDavid anymore hahaha what were GM’s thinking

Both Suter and Parise were free agent signings by the Wild… nobody was heisted… well… at least not in a trade anyway… financially you could make an argument!

whitev70r 07-13-2021 04:02 PM

Well, maybe 'heist' wasn't the right word but I do recall that many teams were after them and then they managed to pull off getting both. You know you're going to overpay at free agency, that's a given.

But the point I was making was that I actually recall in my memory when they were signed as a BIG deal and now they are being bought out ... !!!

Obsideon 07-13-2021 07:36 PM

Damn it's crazy that Suter and Parise still have FOUR more years on their contracts and they basically fizzled out 2-3 years ago. That's 7 years of paying 2 players $15m for average players. It's almost Loui-esque.

MG1 07-13-2021 07:43 PM

The Stanley Cup is headed for Montreal!

....................to get repaired, lol.

https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...dented-parade/

and no, it won't just buff out. That's some major damage. Not the first time. Then there's the time it got stolen and left on the side of the road.

Praise yes. Suter maybe this season but he’s been a steady 40-50 pt defenceman. I’d take him over edler.

CRS 07-14-2021 06:13 AM

I'd take Suter in a heartbeat.

He'll probably play for a discount too since he's already getting paid.
