Won't be one if he stays on LTIR.

From a player's point of view, what is the difference between retiring and LTIR (and then retire after contract term expires). I know it makes a helluva difference from the team's perspective.

So far as I know, you don't get paid the remainder of your contract if you retire, but you do get paid if you're on LTIR.

whitev70r 07-22-2021 09:40 PM

Then why wouldn't a player and team choose LTIR 100% of the time.

I remember the Leafs did with a couple of players just to bury their contracts and get the cap relief.

RiceIntegraRS 07-22-2021 11:02 PM

they do choose LTIR 99.9% of the time. That 0.1% was Luongo....... I never fully understood why he wasnt placed on LTIR by the Panthers. *Edit just read an article to jog my memory, panthers save on the cap hit of Luongo now, while the Canucks take the brunt of the penalty.

whitev70r 07-23-2021 07:28 AM

^ K, so for Shea Weber, if he retires, it could be some sort of saving for Canadiens but Nashville has to bend over ...

another reason why Lu decided to retire was he wanted to work in hockey and from my understanding if the player is on LTIR he's still considered employed but the NHL team so it's not like he could go out and get a different job with in hockey.

Wasn't Pronger on LTIR while working for the NHL or was that under a different CBA?

Pronger has 'Bettman privileges' for some reason.

No, MTL would be responsible for some of the recapture as well. It just wouldn't be as severe as what NSH would pay as they received more of the benefit over the entirety of the contract.

Luongo was really the first time a person decided to retire and consequently the teams being punished with recapture.

List of other players who are eligible for recapture unless already on LTIR:

Shea Weber MTL* 14 2026 $7.857
Duncan Keith CHI 13 2023 $5.538
Alex Ovechkin WSH 13 2021 $9.538
Zach Parise/Ryan Suter MIN 13 (each) 2025 $7.538 (apiece)
Marian Hossa ARI^ 12 2021 $5.275
Sidney Crosby PIT 12 2025 $8.7
Henrik Zetterberg DET 12 2021 $6.083
Jeff Carter LAK" 11 2022 $5.272
Johan Franzen DET 11 2020 $3.954
Jonathan Quick LAK 10 2023 $5.8
Nicklas Backstrom WSH 10 2020 $6.7
Jordan Staal CAR 10 2023 $6

Oh no. Dim Jim better not make this move.

-trying to pull a rabbit out of a hat but instead gets overpriced fertilizer turd.

OEL still has 6 years left in his 8 year, 66 million dollar contract.

Supposedly Ariz keeps $1.2M of OEL's cap.

pastarocket 07-23-2021 01:00 PM

Dumb ass Dim Jim!

Takes one step forward and two steps back with this trade to get OEL and Garland.

Salary dump of the overpaid fourth line players by Benning is a good move.

Then Dim Jim fucks up the trade by acquiring a thirty year old d man with 6 years remaining on a 66 million dollar contract.

Is OEL that big of an upgrade to our defensive core??

Really??

Razor Ramon HG 07-23-2021 01:05 PM

Looks like we be paying OEL 7M a year + potentially an additional first rounder next year.

Please no.

AzNightmare 07-23-2021 01:07 PM

WTF..... additional first rounder?

So much sacrifice. Dim Jim really thinks team is going to win the cup this season.
I mean, might as well go for it, right? Not his problem anymore after this season if the Canucks don't make the playoffs anyway.

winson604 07-23-2021 01:09 PM

Doesn't look like additional first. 1st, 2nd (next year) and a 7th

mb_ 07-23-2021 01:09 PM

Holy fuck didn't see that one coming

spoon.ek9 07-23-2021 01:10 PM

two 1st round picks would be highway robbery even with salary retention. JB better not be that fucking stupid.

winson604 07-23-2021 01:11 PM

OEL and Garland for Beagle, Eriksson, Roussel a 1st tonight, a 2nd (next year) and a 7th. ARIZ retains 12 per cent of OEL salary
