Wow. I know it's salary dump which is good thing for signing Petey and Quinn but on the other hand that's more draft picks we're giving up. But at the same time it's possible our window needs to start next season especially with Bo voicing his opinion. I think the jury needs to be out on this for the time being

Expresso 07-23-2021 01:24 PM

Desperate move for a GM that wants back in the playoffs asap...

Obsideon 07-23-2021 01:26 PM

Seeing some polarizing feedback, some say we got robbed, some say it's a huge win.
I guess it also depends on how Garland steps up and how OEL regresses. He's not throw-in. At the moment I think it's a good trade.
Getting out of the 4th liner's contracts is huge, although he was the one that signed them all ...

spoon.ek9 07-23-2021 01:31 PM

on paper it seems like a good deal for us. but obviously we have to see how this pans out during the season.

Hondaracer 07-23-2021 01:36 PM

Oh whattttt

AzNightmare 07-23-2021 01:36 PM

OEL's 30.
He's not going to get any better. That's a long contract to take.

Garland's pt/g on paper seems decent. I don't know anything about him other than that.
Looks like a legit top 6 fwd though with some more room to grow.

His potential is what makes this trade a win or not...

winson604 07-23-2021 01:39 PM

My fucking god how many years did we wait to get the contract of these guys off the books. Off the top of my head didn't all 3 contracts end at the end of this season? I was ok with going through this year knowing it's another throw away year but we'll have money to spend. Nope! Not only did we take on OEL's contract but we gave away 3 picks? Holy crap this is a terrible trade. Yotes should be laughing. Other GMs probably also kicking and screaming losing the chance to rob Dim Jim.

6thGear. 07-23-2021 01:40 PM

OEL may be 30 but the other options we were looking at was Edler and Hamonic. At least OEL is proven to be a top dman. Better than aging Keith going to the oilers

Hondaracer 07-23-2021 01:45 PM

I think OEL can play a big role, he’s our #1 now basically

RiceIntegraRS 07-23-2021 01:48 PM

Its gonna take awhile to wrap my head around this trade. We're a better team now but at what expense of our future? Im hoping the OEL regression was because he simply didnt wanna play for Arizona anymore......

Hondaracer 07-23-2021 01:49 PM

While dim Jim gives away picks like candy #9 didn’t seem toooo good this year.

Let’s watch what can be had between 7-12 or so tonight

BlackV62K2 07-23-2021 01:50 PM

DimJim loves handcuffing himself. Guess he's going big, if he fails and gets fired, its the next GMs problem.

highfive 07-23-2021 01:51 PM

OEL's regression

1. Age / injury...downhill from 30

2. His game is always there. Played in a shitty system of Arizona. Can he become the 40-50 pt guy?

30 is not that old. Lots of dman in their 30s and top pairing.

68style 07-23-2021 01:54 PM

Garland is a really good player, honestly I think he's better than our projected 9th pick would ever be.

If OEL can play at a high level to 34/35 years old......... this is a win for me.

It's just too bad that all those guys were pretty much done after this year and we could just have a fresh start.

murd0c 07-23-2021 01:54 PM

OEL hasn't been happy in AZ, we all know he wanted to play here and along side Hughes this is a massive move. Especially with basically every team needing dmen this year and the flat cap. With the 1.2 in salary retained I think this is a huge move for us, a top 4 dman and a top 6 forward is exactly what we have been needing.

punkwax 07-23-2021 01:57 PM

I am ok with this.

Wish AZ had retained more salary, however, overall this isn’t too bad of a deal. If the draft was deep, I might have a different tune.

spoon.ek9 07-23-2021 02:00 PM

I think there's some clarification needed here. It's actually 12% retained, not $1.2M.

12% of $8.25M is $990,000 which leaves a $7.26M cap hit for us.

It seems like teams are more interested in 2022 and beyond draft picks because of the limited info on this year's group. Scouts weren't able to see a lot of players play in person due to covid restrictions. Logically it makes sense but of course, this isn't the first time we've seen JB mortgage the future to win right now. Really, REALLY hope this doesn't bite us in the ass down the road.

I'm of the theory that OEL was absolutely miserable in AZ as it's a true dumpster fire of an organization. Comments from Garland seemed like he too was fed up with AZ.

I think it's this ^^^.
Instantly frees up massive cap space for DimJim to sign Petey and Hughes.
Gives them a top pair D man to replace Edler.

Frees room on the roster for DimJim to offer Podkolzin a roster spot and to offer Dickenson a contract.

But the long term cost, giving up 3 picks.

Overall I still think DimJim gave up a ton but at the same time I think the long game will show if this was a good trade of not.

Alpine 07-23-2021 02:03 PM

I for one am excited about this, as I think this OEL regression has been overly exaggerated. We should have at least another 3-4 good years left. Garland is also a good pickup, assuming we won't have to break the bank signing him as he's still an RFA.

Yes, Roussel/Eriksson/Beagle only had 1 year left on their contracts, but do we want to waste a prime year of Peterson/Boser/Hughes/Horvat? What message does it send to this group if we're willing to say we'll just throw away a year of their primes?
Our "rebuild" is over after picking the aforementioned big 4, and sliding Demko into the #1 G spot. And that's a pretty damn solid rebuild if you ask me. It's time to go.

SkinnyPupp 07-23-2021 02:08 PM

Surprised I am seeing people say they would rather have a "throwaway season" than try to make big trades and win now

They have some great players, excellent coaching, made a great run the other year, have great goaltending.. And you want to "throw away" a season and rebuild from zero after that? With the #9 pick in a weird draft that didn't have proper scouting? :seriously:

Not to mention this #9 pick could take 2-3 years to develop if they even pan out at all. I get it, people see the first-round pick and the initial thought is that we're going to be getting a top-line F/D that can jump in almost right away.

So much of today's offense comes from the D. I hated seeing us not resign Ehrhoff as he was a huge piece of our offense during those years.

TjAlmeida 07-23-2021 02:17 PM

Hope they have a pre arranged agreement with Garland since he is a RFA.

Rumour has it they haven't even spoken to Garland prior to the trade. If he signs a decent contract we should be ok.

pastarocket 07-23-2021 02:19 PM

Benning better get on his horse and talk with Petey's agent quickly. Get a new contract done for Petey before other teams' GM start giving offer sheets for Petey.
