those are his comments ABOUT the trade. we're talking about initial contract negotiations as he's an RFA. side note: hopefully these new additions means we buy out or trade JV. I'm also seeing rumors about Canucks shopping Schmidt which I really hope isn't the case. |

Drafts 9th overall player. X player doesn't pan out as expected in 2-3 years. Canucks Fans: WTF JIM BENNING! SCOUTS SUCK. WE NEED BRACKETT. |
Left handed defencmen; Hughes, Rathbone, OEL, Schmidt, Joulevi Right handed defencmen; Myers |
Rumor a couple week ago is Schmidt asked for a trade but yet he didn't shoot the rumors down whereas Miller came out instantly saying he never asked for a trade. Also for JV I think the Canucks can void his contract if he does get prosecuted no? |
I am OK with this trade. Yes one more year before those contracts expire anyway but that's throwing away another year. We get immediately better for less money? That's 3 anchors gone in one massive shake up. If you're gonna be tied to cap space, might as well be tied to players that have some possible upside and not be tied to garbage. |
Benning is going all in to build a legit Stanley Cup contender. JB’s “all in” Poker face: https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6d2e597a4f.jpg Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Just realized, we got OEL AND we didn't have to trade away Demko!! :lawl: |
Ah we got ourselves a new “Ericsson” contract. Benning magic. |
OEL played decent in an off year for a shitty Arizona team. Eriksson played good on a stacked Boston team and the prize is Garland not OEL |

I think it has the POTENTIAL to be a good trade. One unpredictable is how the players actually perform so we'll see in good time. This roster at the moment is still pretty far from a 'contender'. |
Watch Eriksson and Beagle have a breakout year. |
So after my emotional knee jerk reaction in my post here are my thoughts. - JB basically got rid of all a bunch of his free agent mistakes in 1 tradeol bravo. Of course the contracts for all 3 expire at the end if the year so while props, not mad props - Admittedly since I had my first born (7 years ago) I haven't had the ability to watch hockey to the degree I did pre fatherhood. I didn't know who the fuck Garland was so thought who was this bum the threw in. Sounds like he's solid and while not signed yet it should be fine - The Canucks while essentially having not been a playoff team for years minus COVID and 1st year Willie D we sure love trading away draft picks and here are 3 more gone. Sure, you have to give to get but I think if we look back they've mostly been a waste I.e. Very but sometimes a win I.e. JT Miller imo - OEL well I guess it all comes down to this. I'm not crazy about OEL but sure he makes us better no doubt and while I don't expect him to be really good in the ladder years i just have Loui E PTSD in me with the term like fuck I just survived 5 of 6 years of Loui I hope it won't be the case here. |
To make any of this work OEL has to play like a top pairing Dman, to make the difference we need to make a run he will need to return to form to a true #1 in all odds Swedes seem to always need their buddy around so OEL and Petey hopefully already know each other and this deal must also be a huge weight off Hughes’s shoulders now |
Adding another Swede hopefully means we can bring Edler back cheap as a 3rd pairing D. |
Looks decent on paper.. but all it takes is one injury and the whole ship sinks... Still need way more depth to be a contender. |
If 9th OA could of potentially be Brandt Clarke id be pretty sad. |
Phew after Clarke i believe theres a huge dropoff now. I wasnt high on Guenther |
Surprised how high MacTavish, Johnson and Guenther have gone… not that upset about this trade anymore as long as OEL plays decent for half his remaining… Garland was quoted as saying he loves the game if Petey, Horvat and Hughes and that he watched Demko at Boston College and that he can’t wait to help them be better so sounds like he’s pretty jacked |
https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comm..._az_everybody/ More Garland: "It stings. I wanted to be there forever. I guess they’ll never know what they could have got me for, price-wise. They'll never find out. I would have stayed there forever, through the rebuild. It’s too bad, but everything happens for a reason.” The " I guess they’ll never know what they could have got me for, price-wise. They'll never find out. I would have stayed there forever, through the rebuild." part is interesting because he is confirming they are rebuilding AND implying he would have taken a discount |
I don't mind this. It's JB's last shot, he had to make some big changes, and this was it. People say the 3 contracts would've ended in a year and gave us cap relief, but there's no guarantee JB wouldnt have signed some more plugs with that or that he could've scored something good on free agency. At least here we got someone who can actually play. Will he be worth his contract 3 years or 5 years from now? who knows. we've seen players who light it up after a change, and players who can't even make the lineup after a change. i'm sure having OEL will make more players want to play here now. Petey, Hughes, Horvat, Boeser, and now Garland & OEL. we have Hog who will better establish himself this next year and Podz coming in. Things are looking bright. it's likely Schmidt or another Dman will get moved, so there'll still be room to pay the young guns. it might also make the kids more willing to take bridge deals at a discount now. The only problem i see here is that we'll need to fill out the bottom 6 again. despite their cap hit, beagle and roussel were staples to the 3/4 lines. and with JV potentially being bought out, that's 3 guys we need to replace. God knows what JB will do.... lol |
Beagle and Roussel hardly even played last year??? Why are they important at all? Bottom 6 is going to be Pearson, Dickinson, Podkolzin (3rd line) and 4th will be probably be Motte, Highmore and Lockwood or MacEwen... something like that. Possibly Boyd or Hawyrluk come back. |
Beagle was a solid 4C. He was a large part of the reason why our 4th line was not to be underestimated when we were in the playoffs that one year. Can he be replaced? Sure, the question is with who? Ours (and JB's) goal here isn't just to limp into the playoffs. We want success and the only true team success formula involves depth which we clearly do no have. And hence, this is why people cringe when they see our draft picks being thrown into essentially every deal JB has ever made. If we were a perennial contender, giving up picks would be totally fine. But we aren't. We've made the playoffs twice since 2015 but we're making deals like ermagerd we so close let's do this! With all that said, I'm still trying to look at the positives and the potential of next season :lol |
Sutter is still around too.. This deal has made the Canucks a better team than they were last season. Let’s hope Podkolzin makes an impact year one similar to what Höglander did. |
