Woke up early and drove to the boonies yesterday.

Then I drove around and ended up ruining my tires.

crazy packaging that they can fit a 40L+ fuel tank in that

EvoFire 09-17-2022 02:00 PM

@Traum it just looks like you picked up a lot of rubber

The tank is supposed to have 43L capacity, but when the fuel gauge flashes empty, I can only put at most 31 - 32L's worth of gas in it. I can certainly run it down for another 70km+, but I wouldn't want to risk damaging the fuel pump.

Picking up OPR -- other people's rubber -- is inevitable. And what I suspect is happening is, because the rear inside portions of the tires don't really see very much weight, there isn't enough lateral force to scrub them off. If you compare the inside to the middle and the outside sections, those parts bear enough weight and lateral force to scrub the OPR off.

Adding tread life at the track instead of using it. Win :woot2:

Did you really go off roading if you didn't take a photo of your car up on a log :troll:

My lame rental car for the next few days. Doesn't even come with keyless entry and only seats 2 but Traum was right, it's dynamically superior to the 911.

its the 356 Speedster of today.

simple for its time, a joy to drive (especially in manual form with numeric shifter)

That drive down is so awesome - one of my favourite memories is swinging by Kurt Cobain's hometown of Aberdeen (which is a really lame place). So many awesome towns along the way though. Great car, great roads.

Nice shots! And you kept the car nice and clean for them! This is coming from a guy in Hong Kong who's obviously out of the loop. Is it safe there? lol.

Dayam~ GTS 4.0~! :eek::drool:bowjerk:

Is that a stick or PDK? Both are supposed to be fantastic, although lots of people say the gear ratios for the stick version are a little too tall.

I hope you'll find some empty road in the middle of nowhere, and wring the engine out in 2nd gear. It's supposed to be orgasmic. :bowjerk:

bcrdukes 09-19-2022 08:39 PM

The PDK is sweet. People aka "purists" often shit on these transmissions but it is one hell of a transmission when you take it out to the track. On the street won't do it justice at all. Once you try it, you'll believe it.

It's a PDK and I still find the gearing a bit tall, it's not bad but another 3-5% shorter would be great. It's a great box but I still prefer the engagement of a manual.

I'm swinging up to Whistler tomorrow then out to Princeton via #7 and #3 on Wednesday so I'll wind it out a bit. It sounds fantastic in the city so far. The auto start-stop is kinda hilarious cause the motor doesn't quietly wake up ever.

FWIW, I suspect the only Boxster in the Porsche Drive fleet right now is the GTS 4.0 so it's their best deal going on (only 4600kms too) - ~$400/day vs ~$700/day for a 911. It's spec'd pretty nice - all the performance stuff other than ceramic brakes are there.

Shaggin wagon living up to its name… but going about it the wrong way

Badhobz 09-20-2022 10:54 AM

400 bucks a day for something like that isn’t bad at all. Beats owning a 150k+ car and paying for the maintenance and depreciation all the while never driving it.

trollface 09-20-2022 11:01 AM

Porches don't depreciate what are yo talking about. Ask the dealership, drive them around the block and boom it's worth 30k over msrp.

this hunk of junk begs to differ. before this insanity began, 997's were in the low 30's-40's and these 996's were 15-20. stupid pandemic, stupid disposable incomes, stupid beetles.

Porsche Vancouver has multiple "used" (400km) GT3s listed for $399k (MSRP is more like $250-300k) and the lava orange one has a sold sticker. I bet they have no trouble selling the other GT3s for $399k as well.

Twitchy how was the drive down ? was there any major bad patches in california or oregon that i should be aware of? i wanted to do this drive this summer, but its getting kinda late in the season to do it now.

I wanted to hit up highway 1 and take it all the way down to san fran and then to L.A.

Probably take i5 back up.

but grats on living the dream man!!! miata + twisty roads + good weather. What else can you ask for.

BIC_BAWS 09-20-2022 10:50 PM

I5 is fucking horrible. It's a good thing you're in a GT car. My ears were ringing when I got home last night.

now that it's cooler and less wildfire it could be worthwhile. Obviously days aren't as long if you plan on hauling it back

we started from astoria bridge all the way to san luis obispo
to cover the whole coast, on the way back went from dana point to gaviota, then beelined it up i5 with detour to shasta/crater lake
only 97 north of weed OR was closed the day before from fires but didn't run into any detours/troubles

Badhobz 09-21-2022 05:58 AM

Ear plugs ! That’s brilliant. Why didn’t I think of that.
