In those terms the rental program works pretty well too (https://www.porsche.com/canada/en/ac.../subscription/) - it's $3k/mo to start with a 718 and $4k/mo for a 911. Rent it during the summer months for $10-15k/yr versus spending $150-250k in one go. If you go up to the multi-car subscription ($4500/mo) you can even flip the cars (unlimited).

(Damn, that's actually not bad for a guy like me who won't drive it much.)

PS. Put your Corolla up on Turo and I'll rent that too. I got time to kill right now.

Badhobz 09-21-2022 07:01 AM

this is excellent! so instead of taking my ratrolla down to the states, i might just spring for a month worth of 718 or 911 convertible and take that sucker down instead.

While you do that, rent out the Ratrolla to RS. :concentrate:

Etymotic ear plugs are lifesavers when driving convertibles. I'm moderately hearing impaired and need to wear earplugs on the highway with convertibles (or any loud car) and Etymotics are awesome - they still let in all frequencies unlike foam earplugs so I can still hear music, emergency vehicles, and the mechanicals (just quieter).

Went to Princeton via #7 to Hope then #3 (Photo is Manning Park). The drive was fantastic. The GTS is magnificent - I like it better than the 911 and I think I might be a convert to the PDK now (it's ridiculously smart). I still like the idea of plopping my kid in the back of a 911 so the whole family can get around in it but the Boxster was just incredible in all ways (other than being loud). For ~$120k it's a bargain and as a rental at $400/day it's a great experience.

Q: Do the local tracks allow Boxsters to be tracked? I hear it depends on the track and group? I don't think I would pass the broomstick test as I sit very upright.

At least with the 718 base, S, and GTS cars, Porsche did the unthinkable / unacceptable where they literally added fake sound via the car's speakers. On the turbo 4 cars, it's called "the Soundaktor", and on the GTS 4.0, I believe it is called the "Sound Symposer". On the turbo 4 cars, the system can be easily defeated by pulling a fuse. Most people report significantly less droning and a more pleasant + natural sounding cabin with the Soundaktor disabled. On the GTS 4.0, defeating the system it a little more involved. I am not 100% certain on how it is done, but I think it involves physically disconnecting a dedicated speaker somewhere.

I'm fairly sure at least some organizers at Mission allows convertibles with factory rollover protection on track. Best to check with the organizer about this, but I don't think they are allowed in "competition use" under CACC / SCCBC's rules. (So no Speedy Goat Time Trials, but autox is OK.)

The GTS 4.0 also has cylinder deactivation at light throttle and I could hear what felt like a resonance when cruising at around 2,000-2,200 rpm (about 120kph or so). Because my earplugs filter out some of the sounds I could really pick up the vibration/flutter and it felt like something was wrong with the engine (it didn't sound great either). Turning off auto stop kills deactivation but I didn't know that till today. A little extra throttle solved it too though.

On the flip side fuel economy was great - I averaged a reported 8.5L/100km despite not being particularly gentle on the throttle. My brick of a RDX is lucky to get 10.5L/100km the highway.

Side note: I've never felt as poor as when I talked to the sales guy. They're dealing with 8 (and 9) figure net worths and telling me about the Dr who already owns 6 Porsches who had to fight to get a $400k GT3 and here I am waiting for a tech IPO to write the cheque I need to buy a GTS. My 1% problem, LOL.

Weren't you just worried about hitting trigger rates, now you're buying Porsches in a recession, rising rate environment. :okay: rs ballers

I also have the auto start/stop + cylinder deactivation on my GT4. I always just turn it off the moment I step into the car. In addition to that too, even with the sport exhaust on (valves open), they are not always open. When you have it on, The valves will open during idle and anything above 4-5k depending on what gear you are in. However, they stay closed during 1.5k to 4k rpm.

You got me there. The rate increases suck more because of what I can't do with my income but it's ultimately ok. In any case, I'm committed to only buying a "toy" if I have cash coming in via my investment side of things, not my salaried side of things. I'm only looking to get on the "list" at this point - sales guy says I'm looking at a minimum of an 18 month wait especially considering I have no trade or prior relationship with them. Knowing that the 718 is going out of production in the next 2 years or so I want to at least have a shot at getting one. If my shot comes up and my chips haven't come in by that time I'll figure something out - a nicely used 981 or 991.1 will work just fine too.

That's exactly what I am thinking as well. Get your name in the hat, worry about it when it gets picked.

2500km for the month. Might not be enough to do a huge trip but should be okay for most people.

1 dollar per km for any overage.

For monthly subscriptions it's 2500km/mo. Some routes you could cover with that:

Vancouver to Jasper to Banff to Vancouver: ~2000km
Vancouver to Astoria to Crescent City (CA border) to Vancouver: ~2100km

Do a 3 month sub and there's enough to go to SF/LA etc. There's nothing in the FAQ that says you can't go to the US with the car.

Yeah they can check the logs and I'm certain taking it to the track is a big no-no. I was asking relative to buying one - my wife and I both prefer a convertible but I'm not sure how it'd affect my ability to take it to a track. I'm not going to be a track rat but it's impossible to exploit a car like this without going onto a track.

STi is getting some maintenance so the RS got tagged in for DD duty this week. Forgot how nice it is to drive. But will also be nice to take out a non-descript vehicle again
