$35 - 100GB Canada Wide
$45 - 200GB Can-Us-Mex

I also did quite a bit of research on other brands like Fizz, Public Mobile and Freedom, all roughly around the same price point. (spreadsheet here)

Fizz would be my choice if I was gonna go with someone outside of the majors. They allow for data rollover (up to 2 mo) and if you needed more, the forums (other members) can gift you extra data. You can also switch your plan whenever. For instance, if say Jan-May you're only gonna be in Canada, you can be on the Canadian plan then switch to Can-US for July, switch back after. Fizz uses the Freedom network when in Vancouver, Fizz-EXT uses Rogers/Verizon, but has access to all 3 majors. You can apparently just select which network you want. Downside with Fizz is that you have to use a VoLTE capable phone.

Public Mobile seems to be pretty reliable for the cheaper brands. Per track chat, it works mostly everywhere. VIMC, A27, Ridge, etc. Aka the middle of nowhere. No data rollover, but it's had more tenure in Vancouver than Fizz. Freedom I hear just sucks, but I threw that in there for the sake of comps.

For me, the extra $50/mo is made up in savings on my Telus Home Services that I'll be eligible to get once I move Mobility onto the account.

@blkgsr @nabs

Read this.

Afaik, Telus only offers iPhone 16 (+$10 on the $45 plan) Pixel 9 and S24 FE (+$5 on the $45 plan) and requires home internet

Look into Audio Technica as well, but they aren't as easy to get around here. I would suggest Shure, but they might be out of your range, and their BT offerings are... ehhh kinda of weird.

I ended up ordering the XM4. They were $20 cheaper and also available for pick up in Richmond! Picked them up this morning already :D

I saw some reviews saying the XM4 isn't too far off from the XM5 and much more affordable. For my purposes anyways, I'm sure it'll be a great new experience :fullofwin:

I got XM5's when costco had them for $260-270 pre-tax!

Crappy tire has pennzoil platinum for $41.79 with a $15 rebate for ultra platinum, $10 for platinum. Not sure how you'll mail in a rebate with the strike happening..

Edit: $39.97 at Walmart for 5w-40 plat

I have the same one and it's decent. Could be more powerful for hotpot, but I can't complain too much for $40 (it was in the clearance section)

unit 12-02-2024 02:38 PM

yeah my only complaints are that its a bit bulky.
i think for the best experience when it comes to hot pot you want something really low profile and also not bulky on the table.

spoon.ek9 12-02-2024 03:13 PM

Just cut a hole in your dining table and it can be dual purpose for... you know... other things.

No, you did good. The XM4 look way better.... there is a reason the xm3 and 4 had the exact same exterior design...

the 5 are just... lllololol

But anyhow, the moment you have these type of headphones, air travel is just night and day~

Public Mobile seems to be a lot more well received than Freedom Mobile. My friend uses Freedom and well.. he loses reception on the S2S. One time we left West Van and he went the wrong way... we couldn't reach him. Tbh anywhere we plan to meet up, if something goes awry, we pretty much expect not being able to call him LOL

underscore 12-03-2024 11:33 AM

Has anyone got suggestions/experience with those cheap drones on Aliexpress? I just want something basic for scouting ahead on the odd 4x4 trail and seeing if a squirrel is fucking around on my roof but all the <$20 ones seem almost too cheap.

Public is Telus's ultra low cost carrier that sits below Koodo. I'd trust their network before Freedom.

I joke about Freedom with my friends all the time. They have a great name, Freedom, free from connections.

bcrdukes 12-03-2024 12:38 PM

I cannot, in good faith, recommend Freedom to anyone, especially if you have expectations of your phone to work when you need it most. If you are okay to miss the occasional calls, messages, and be unable to browse the web or use web-based apps, Freedom will do the job.

There are some people I know who are on Freedom, but they are the type who don't care to remain connected.

Badhobz 12-03-2024 12:40 PM

It’s freedom from work duhhhh. Missed calls, no signal. It sounds like my dream carrier.

Oh prease drop ma calls… I no wanna talk to idiots.
