yeah making Sneed miss a tackle? And threw a TD? Clear MVP on offense if they win. Unless CMC makes some more plays, he's been good too. Purdy being Purdy which is good enough but if they win we'll get a million articles saying he's the next Brady.
If Chiefs win it's 100% Mahomes

What do you think might have changed the course of history for tonight?
1. If SF made the PAT in the 4thQ instead of missing it. That would make it 20-16 in the dying minutes, forcing KC to go for 7 on that last drive in regulation or lose, instead KC got the FG for a tie?
2. In OT, instead of going for 3 pt FG, try to win it and go for a TD. If successful, game over. If SF doesn't get the TD, then SF defends to stay in the game (which they didn't anyhow) or lose by a KC score.

Still buzzing about this game
Bills, Ravens, 49ers all had the Chiefs within grasp. But their defense did enough to hold on, and then Mahomes was just Mahomes. Him coming out with 2 minutes left, reminded me of when Brady would do it. You just knew they were going to at least tie it. If they needed the TD? They probably would have played slightly differently to get that instead. It just felt inevitable.
Same as OT... 49ers needed to score a TD, or it felt pretty much inevitable that it would at least be another tie, or more likely a touchdown.
And he is doing this with complete nobodies on the perimeter. Except Kelce of course. That makes it even more impressive.
Mahomes is going to ruin expectations for fans of other teams even more than Brady did.
Here's a complete list of all the QBs drafted in the 2010's and 2020's with a Super Bowl ring (so 14 years):

Honestly, it is neither of these scenarios.
Special teams errors from the Niners and big plays from the Chiefs special teams won the Super Bowl for KC.
1. The glaring error was the Niners fumble on the kickoff return. No communication between the two Niners players. If the player receiving the ball saw that there was a chance the ball would hit his team mate and cause the ball to hit awkwardly in the field, then he should yell out “move, move!!”.
What happened instead was the ball hit the player’s shoe bounce awkwardly in front of the kick returner. That fumble lead to the Chiefs scoring their first TD.
2. Chiefs special teams blocked the PAT. Was the kicker at fault for kicking the ball too low? I am not sure. The CBS analyst Romo mentioned that the Chiefs special teams are very good at batting down balls. Huge play for the Chiefs.

Don't both teams get a chance in OT even if SF got a touchdown KC would still have gotten the ball.
I'm confused why SF chose to recieve the ball first what's the advantage to that in OT?
whitev70r
02-12-2024, 07:27 AM
You may be right ... they changed the OT rule so both teams get the ball no matter what. So in that case, I see now why people are saying that if you win coin toss in OT, you should kick it to other team first.

Coach Shanahan could have gambled on fourth down and go for the TD in overtime. I would have made that gutsy call. Heck, if it was the Detroit coach Dan Campbell, you know that coach would have made a call run a play on fourth down haha.
Shanahan used a trick play during the game that lead to a TD. He called a play to have Purdy throw to one of his wide receivers, Jennings. Jennings threw the ball to McCaffrey.
Why not use a trick play on fourth down in overtime? Use a trick play to confuse the Chiefs defence.
As an armchair coach, I would have used a trick play where the kicker faked the field goal, Purdy takes the ball and throws it to Jennings. Jennings throws it to McCaffrey or an open wide receiver to get the first down. An alternate trick play would be to have the kicker fake the field goal, and Purdy throws the ball to an open wide receiver to get a first down or ask Purdy to run the ball.
-would have been a very gutsy play call to use a trick play on fourth down in OT and fake the field goal. Chiefs offence is so good. The Niners also lost Greenlaw during the game because of a torn achilles injury. Greenlaw provided the Niners defence with a pass rushing threat. He did not play in overtime.
Niners defence got weaker as a result of that injury. Would you trust in the Niners defence to stop Mahomes in OT with Greenlaw out with an injury?
I am not sure about that. In fact, Shanahan called a timeout during OT when he saw that his defensive coordinator Wilks put a defensive scheme with five defensive players in the backfield. Shanahan had doubts about Wilks defensive scheme in OT. Therefore, he asked Wilks to call another defensive scheme instead during that time out.

Since it was such a close game, people are going to scrutinize Shanahan's decisions for months. I'll wait for the all-22, because it's literally impossible to draw conclusions on what the broadcast shows.
But I would question the decision of going to a trick play before giving Purdy a chance to do it... I don't think it ruined their game, but maybe save that for when you really need it? Like OT maybe?
Moody was one of the low key question marks going into the game. A rookie kicker, while he was 100% on extra points, he'd missed a few field goals here and there that he normally would have made in lower pressure situations. This time he kicks the ball low, making it easier to block (yes this is a thing, go watch the Ravens comeback vs Colts in 2022 to see this.. Calais was in that guy's head lol. They fired their kicker shortly after that game) and that makes it much easier for the Chiefs to complete the comeback. His mental will be tested all offseason.
Compare that to Bengals rookie kicker Evan McPherson, who, along with the defense, was the main reason the Bengals made it to the Super Bowl in 2022. Joe Burrow actually played really poorly in that run, and then they ran into a weird Chiefs meltdown in the championship game. But it was McPhearless who led them to the Super Bowl.
Meanwhile the 49ers walked away from Robbie Gould, who was old but never showed any signs of play falling off before he was not re-signed, and then quietly retired this offseason. I wonder if there is more to that story?

Fat 50 Cent almost passing out while hanging upside down was the most memorable piece of that one.
I didn't like the setup to Dre's, the whole street and houses you could only see from one side, meh.
If you're a fan of the artistry of it all, I don't know how you can't see Usher's performance being one of the best in a long time. The man is in his 40's and spent 15 minutes straight dancing with full choreography, while singing LIVE.
None of the artists you mentioned can do that, not one of them, that takes real talent.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5Coy2UytFU
This video was short, because the Youtube version are highlights, and Mahomes didn't really have any highlights in the first half. And when they came out flat in the second, I was wondering if we were watching another Bengals-like meltdown.
As much as this was a magical Mahomes game, you can really see how the 49ers defense were struggling. After seeing this footage, it's not surprising at all that Steve Wilks was shitcanned. Seems to me like any team coming out of the AFC (except the Dolphins) would have beat them. He got them pretty far though

That is one thing about NFL contracts that you don't see in NHL. In the NHL, a contract seem pretty iron clad ... I mean you can't 'release' OEL, he'd still get his full salary till the end of his contract term. In NFL, many players are 'released' before the end of their contract and whatever was guaranteed was paid but the rest of the salary ... player is SOL.

Sources said the Raiders are expected to release Garoppolo before the fifth day of the new league year in mid-March, when he would earn an $11.25 million roster bonus. Garoppolo also has an $11.25 million base salary guarantee for the 2024 season that now could be voided because of the suspension.
The quarterback signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract that included $33.75 million guaranteed with Las Vegas in March, when Josh McDaniels was the team's head coach and Dave Ziegler the general manager.

I wanted him to stay on the Vikings but not on a 4 year term, wish him luck in Atlanta but time for the Vikes to turn the page. They've signed LB's Blake Cashman from Houston and Andrew Van Ginkel from the Dolphins as well as DE Jonathan Greenard from the Texans. It appears they are concentrating on getting Flores help on Defense, very unlikely they resign Hunter now that they've paid Greenard almost 20 million a season.
So many moves in FA today, Jacobs, Barkley, Aaron Jones gets cut...... I wouldn't be mad if the Vikings signed Aaron Jones.

Not sure if you know/remember but Nathan Rourke was picked up off waivers by New England back on Dec 2023 (from Jaguars). So Mac Jones getting traded out of New England is actually good for Nathan Rourke. But no one is saying Rourke will be starter in NE ... kid is still trying to make it off practice roster. Even on the Jags, he was on practice roster trying to make it to active roster. He made it one week because of injury to T Lawrence. I think Rourke would be a good 2nd string QB or 3rd on any NFL team.

Some team should really give Mason Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer a shot to compete for starting QB, maybe a 2-3 year contract. He isn't going to win you a SB, I don't think, but a good consistent 9 or 10 W's for the season is within the realm of possibility. Then you squeak into playoffs and see what happens. Mason would be probably more consistent than any of the names you listed above.

Nice to see Darnold get a chance. He was no worse than Purdy when he stepped in for him, and I think if he'd been the starter instead, they would have gone just as far with him.

I think it's more that the threat of Lamar running is an important asset for their offence. Teams had to scheme around it, or got cooked (except the Chiefs who had perfect secondary play on top of it). Now they have to scheme around it AND worry about Derrick Henry, who rarely takes snaps off. Oh and he has a 300 lbs FB/Sniffer clearing the way. Then they will have Keaton Mitchell who hopefully comes back healthy about halfway into the season. Mitchell and Henry had two of the fastest RB runs last year (and are like 60 lbs different in weight lol)
I really like the signing. I've always been a fan of Henry even when he was killing the Ravens in the playoffs in that awful 2019 playoffs game. Sent Earl Thomas into the ether.

Kenny Pickett from Steelers traded to Philly ... not sure what to make of it?
1. Did Pickett asked to be moved? Didn't want to play behind Russell Wilson? But what are your chances of playing with Jalen Hurts in Philly? I mean Wilson might be a good 1-2 yr QB so the seat will be vacant eventually if you're Pickett and you mature well.
2. Or, did Pittsburgh want to move him, give up on him already? I mean you gotta think about the future, in a yr or 2 when Wilson is done.

Oh interesting ... so kicking team cannot move until player from receiving team actually touches the ball?
This is the rule change in more detail. It's a great rule change IMO because it lowers the risk of concussion injuries for the player on the receiving team who touches the ball after kick off.
Player safety.
During the 2024 season, kickers will continue to kick from the 35-yard line, but the other 10 players on the kickoff team will line up at the receiving team's 40-yard line. At least nine members of the return team will line up in a "setup zone" between the 35- and 30-yard lines. Up to two returners can line up in a "landing zone" between the goal line and the 20-yard line.
No one other than the kicker and returner(s) can move until the ball hits the ground or hits a player inside the landing zone. Touchbacks will be marked at the 30-yard line, and no fair catches will be allowed. In the event a team wants to attempt an onside kick, it will have to inform officials of its intent and would then be allowed to use the NFL's traditional formation. No surprise onside kicks will be allowed

Edit: It looks like the touchback rule varies depending on where the ball lands.. This is quite a bit more complicated, but it all makes sense. Also there's no more fair catch allowed on kickoffs.
You definitely do not want to blast it out of the endzone. Most kickers will want it to land as close to the 1 yard line as possible and force an old school 20 yard touchback.
The XFL had a kickoff return rate of 97% with these rules; the NFL's was only 22% last year.
This is a shitty graphic with a ton of stupid mistakes, but the rules themselves are correct

This trade is a big reshuffle for the Bills:
The Bills parted ways with several key players amid a salary-cap crunch this offseason, and its receiving corps also saw a makeover with Gabe Davis leaving and Curtis Samuel arriving. Now, however, the Bills would appear to be in need of a new No. 1 receiver for Josh Allen. The Bills are set to select at No. 28 in the first round of the NFL draft, which features a deep group of receiver prospects.
Bills are gonna draft a rookie wide receiver in the upcoming draft. They need a new no. 1 receiver for Allen.

I'm not sure I can get behind a movement that makes Offensive Linemen that kinda dough... like, I been watching NFL for so many years, whenever one of those guys gets hurt, they pull em out and throw in some n00b from Texas Tech or wherever and very rarely can you tell the difference lol.... soemtimes if it's a centre, his huts are a bit off if he's nervous, but that's about it.
I mean if the collective O-Line or the coaching is bad, of course the running back doesn't get holes or the QB gets hurried/sacked... but I honestly think of any position in the NFL that's one that could be coached through with almost any qualified player who came through college.

-talked with a co-worker, a 49ers fan, about the Brandon Aiyuk situation.
The rookie WR wants a contract extension. -wants to be paid more than what the 49ers are offering. San Fran offered $26.5 million per season.
Co-worker said that BA is still under contract for the final year of his rookie deal. San Fran has all the control.
Honestly, the market for wide receivers is over heated now:
Rank Player Compensation
1 Justin Jefferson $35 million
2 A.J. Brown $32 million
3 Amon-Ra St. Brown $30.002 million
4 Tyreek Hill $30 million
Aiyuk thinks that he is a top 5 wide receiver? He's a good player, but not a top 5 WR in my opinion.
San Fran wants two first round picks in any trade for Aiyuk. I am hearing rumours about the Steelers interested in trading for BA.
-unsure if Pittsburgh would be willing to give up two 1st round picks in a trade to acquire Aiyuk.

He wants top $ and other teams know the 49ers are in an impossible situation so they're not going to offer anything close to what they want (rumors are two first round picks? And players?)
They also found the shittiest teams to get offers from.. Patriots, Browns, Steelers. He turned down the Patriots and Browns, so now it's up to the Steelers to get him for as little as possible. They got their QBs for basically free, so they can do whatever.
49ers greater concern is Trent Williams, who is also holding out with contract demands. Aiyuk is a great WR, but Williams is the best tackle in the league BY A LOT, and they can't afford to lose him.
Also I don't think the WR market is inflated. Right now it's as low as it's ever going to be from now on.

Adam Schefter
@AdamSchefter
In the end, Brandon Aiyuk accepted the same deal that has been on the table since August. 10, per league sources. His hold-in did not alter any part of his new four-year, $120 million extension. He took the same deal that had been there for the past three weeks. Hold-in over.

Yeah, I also think that the 49ers are one of the teams which will face the most pressure to win a Superbowl this season given the big payroll of the team AND the fact that this season is the last year of Purdy's rookie contract.
Purdy is going to ask for a big contract after this season to get paid at market value. He makes a paltry amount of $985,000 US for this season.
It will be difficult to keep the same team roster now under the salary cap once Purdy signs a new deal.
Aiyuk got paid. The 49ers are finalizing a new contract for Trent Williams. Williams is ending his hold out. Purdy will definitely get paid with a big contract after this season.

NE over Cincy - Combined yardage for the 2 starting QB's was 285 yds, preseason like indeed.
Chi over Tennesee Titans - Chicago Rookie QB Williams gets less than 100 yrds but still eek out the W because all TD's were by special teams or defence. Going to be a bumpy 1st year but I still like the rookie. Eventually, things will click for him.
Pitts 18 over ATL 10 - Pitts wins by getting 6 FGs ... Steelers fans can go hibernate and wake up next year, Sept 2025 and probably won't miss much.
SEA > DEN ... it's a toss up between Sean Payton or Aaron Rodgers that gives me the greatest satisfaction when they fail. So that's one. Please SF, make it a double on Mon night.

Hard to say, I hope he gets paid huge for playing on such a shitty deal the last 2 years. Will he take-over top paid QB? It's tough because I agree he's not a top 5 QB in the league but it will come down to how well SF does this year and how far they go. If they win a Superbowl it's pretty hard to argue he doesn't deserve the top but that would be the end of that uptrend the Niners have been on over the last few years.
They're reporting that Chase turned down Jefferson money, if that's true that's more insane to me because only in his mind is he better than JJ.

Fact is, there's basically no other choice for them. Pay him, or draft a rookie. I don't know whose contract is ending next year other than Purdy.. Dak would have been, but he was signed just before game 1!
Russell Wilson is on a 1 year LUL
They could wait and see if Darnold signs an extension or not.
This is the main reason contracts have gotten so big for unproven QBs like Love, Tua, or Lawrence. There's just no other option.. If the guy is good enough to be your starter, you HAVE to pay him top dollar. And Purdy was a couple plays away from winning it all, so he has to be seen as worth it, for that system at least. He is PERFECT for the Shanahan system.

1. How many days of money back guarantee is on Dak Prescott's contract? Has the ink even dried yet? Wasn't totally his fault, the D looked like they were all from the practice squad.
2. Did Cincy get robbed by a couple of bad calls ... yah. Burrows thinking, 'HOW do I beat the Chiefs ??!!'
3. Somebody confirm the AFC North standings for me. Am I seeing the Steelers undefeated and 2-0 with Cincy and Baltimore at 0-2 ... no, right?
4. Too bad Russell Wilson couldn't play in Denver but Sean Payton with a Fail again with that L. And it's a good Sunday.
5. TB getting it done ... again.
6. Looks like Minny might be a team to keep an eye on. Coach Kevin O'Connell's got swagger.

Derek Carr is the #1 QB in the league rn
Gardner Minshew has the best completion % in the league
Week 2 KEKW
Chiefs/Bengals was a wild fun game. Some extremely dumb penalties by the Bungles cost them the game. Chase lost his damn mind, I was shocked! I'm glad Burrow is back to normal (except for the goofy hair). I was worried the wrist was truly fucked after last week.
Bears/Texans was also a highly entertaining defensive battle. CJ is The Guy 100%. Caleb will get there. He looks like a rookie but one with amazing potential

The Cowboys are awful partly because the owner Jerry Jones is also the president and GM.
Jerry needs to hire a proper GM and not be GM and an owner. Jerry, you suck as a GM hahaa.
-overpaid Dak Prescott.
Their defence definitely looks like a practice squad. Saints ate up the Cowboys for breakfast hahaa.
My Pats played a competitive game against the Seahawks despite the loss in overtime.
The one big play that the secondary gave up was Geno Smith's TD pass to DK.

More of an indictment of the team and management than Bryce himself. That team is not able to develop a rookie QB. They need to just coast another season and continue to rebuild with the draft.
If they give up on him, some other team should buy low on him. He has excellent timing and precision, like Purdy or Tua. On a Shanahan team, he can end up really good.

I know I post these a lot, but man I need to watch some more Vikings games this year! Kevin O'Connell's scheming had the 49ers defense heads spinning! Darnold played very well too. That Nailor touchdown!

The defense is the strength of this team, everyone was predicting them to be the worst team in the NFC north and a sub 6 win team but they are going to find out. If the offense ever gets healthy they can compete with the best of them, see how Hockenson looks when he comes back and having Addison is also a crucial piece to help take some pressure of Jefferson.
Jones, Cashman, VanGinkle, Pierce, Metallus the defense is very strong and they have one of the best defensive coaches in the league. The secondary is a little bit suspect but all it has to do is be average because pressure is coming.
They have a tough matchup this week with Houston, could go either way.

I was going to say that it was a must win game for Bal or Dal ... might seem overly dramatic to say that in week 3 but you really can't go down 0-3 and there are such high expectations for Dallas especially after the huge signing of Prescott. But if the game continues the way that it is ... there are going to be jersey burnings in Dallas. I mean if you lose, you gotta lose respectably .. this Dallas team is bad. Prescott will probably ask to be traded just because of the pressure there. McCarthy is as good as gone ... I predict mid season firing ... Bill Belichick ... get your coaching shoes warmed up. Jones is the kind of person who might pull the trigger on a stupid move upon a stupid move.

This game has been a clown fiesta of the dumbest laziest play calling playing from ahead, some of the worst officiating ever, Tucker being cooked to the point where he misses from 46 in garbo time, and the refs straight up stealing a safety
3 good quarters and 1 bad quarter is fine though against the best garbage time QB in the league (either him or Carr)
So my take on the 3 quarters is that the O line looked much better this time around, and I'll have to wait for the snap counts to come out, but it looked like they called on Pat Ricard a lot more in this game, blocking for Henry which allowed him to go crazy. There's a major issue with the play calling when ahead, which was an issue for Monken last year, and Roman before that. They call the most basic runs straight into an overloaded box. Yes you have Derrick Henry, but when they know exactly what you're going to do, it's going to be 3 and out. And that allowed them to get back into the game attempting their miracle comeback. When the game got tight again and Monken started having to call a game again, they had two good plays (including one that faked out the broadcast and everyone in the stands, and me) and killed the game.
Defense was a lot tighter in coverage, which Tom Brady was calling out (thought he did a good job in this game). They shut down CD and basically put him out of the game mentally.
I can't overreact to the 4th quarter, because it's basically started out as Dak racking up garbage time points as he always does, along with a really bad onside kick play by Zay, and one extremely bad penalty for roughing the passer.
I watch at least 5 games a week, and I can tell you that usually refs fuck up for most teams equally (except the Chiefs), but it's not the same the last two seasons for the Ravens. You could tell from the first game of the season last year something was up, and it started immediately this season and has continued through to today. Lamar was caught saying something about it between plays, coach said he complained to the league, and Oweh had this to say about it after today's game
https://x.com/ryanmink/status/1838016429955620975
Ravens are the #1 penalized team in the league, up by 40 yards over the second place team after 3 games. They were #1 last year too. Usually through the Lamar era they hover around the middle
Can't blame the refs for bad play calling and bad play, but it makes it tough to watch sometimes. Bad play can be overcome, bad officiating cannot.

Maybe he was too young to be one of those weirdly overperforming veterans the Ravens always seem to get.. so let's give it another go! LUL

Also so I'm not spamming (I hope to see you guys post takes on your teams more!) get ready for some fines

They're usually pretty quiet about the refs, but this year has been egregious

No punts in this game so far between the Commanders and Bengals? That is why I heard from the announcer Joe Buck.
Daniels is playing quite well.
He has the most rushing yards for a QB now this season. 170 yards as of now.

Daniels with a great throw into the end zone for a TD!
Commanders are cooking the Bungles hahha.
First game with no punts or turnovers since 1940.
Daniels is definitely an early favourite for rookie of the year.

You're right, Mike. I stand corrected. I am reading on Favre's involvement with the scam involving rich people taking away government funding from low income people. Mind blowing to read up on the details of the congressional hearing about this terrible crime.
It is Karma for Favre.
-happy to see the Commanders do well as a franchise so far this season. -glad that the league stepped in to force that former owner Dan Snyder, the sleazy billionaire, to sell the team last year.
