yep, been experiencing this too. hoping for a fix soon. it's all over news sites now.

apparently it's affecting older (fat) models more than it is the new slim model.

PSN Error Update

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.
* When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; “An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)”.
* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; “Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game.”
* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; “The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)”
* Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data. (!)

As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologise for any inconvenience caused

is anyone elses ps3 network down?

Hehe 03-01-2010 11:20 AM

^

The problem only affects most of the phat PS3, none of the slim.

If you have one of the phat ones, don't turn on your console, Sony is expected to release a fix in 24hr.

Has anyone tried torrenting BluRays, copying the files to your PS3 then watching? How's the quality?

^ I've done that with most of my DVD's, download a BR rip in PS3 compatible format and then copy it to the PS3. The quality is quite good even when the files are down to 3.99GB, for larger ones (my copy of Transformers) I used PS3 Media Server to send the file to the PS3 (the Playstation can hold files larger than 4GB, but only supports FAT32 via USB which has a max file size of 4GB)

need2speed 03-01-2010 04:25 PM

well my 80gb ps3 just crapped out doesnt read disc's anymore happened around the same time as the psn failure wonder if its related? had the playstation for a little over 2 years apprently lots of guys online have this problem. thank god i have extended warranty. anybody else had their lasers fail?

twitchyzero 03-01-2010 05:51 PM

^ i'd be willing to bet it's just a coincidence. Much like how people are claiming firmwares are bricking their system.
anyways, the issue has been resolved. I doubt they did anything though, just waited for the clock to hit March 1st.

How do you know if it's a PS3 compatible format? Do you just mean standard formats AVI, MPEG, etc?

sometimes (and I mean very rarely) you can fix this be either reseating the HDD, or by entering the service menu and running through all the options (google how to get to the service menu). but the backwards compatible 80GB/old 40GB are the most prone to laser death.

No there's certain requirements for the PS3, I usually just search "<movie title> PS3" and find a hit that's 3.99 or 4GB and has stuff about being PS3 compatible in the descriptions. The best part of PS3 Media Server is that it can encode on the fly and only re-encodes if needed, so if you bring that up but select copy instead of play on the PS3, then it will copy over the movie in a format playable by the PS3.

Killer thanks for the info

That's a MGS4 limited edition Hagane PS3.

For phat PS3, you have in that color, white and black.

For Slim, there are only black and white (FF13 limited edition)

There's always colorware.
