Is homer street and bar next to lupo? |
Tojo's. Had some friends from Toronto who flew over on a business trip and they had dinner allowances from their company so this was a treat on them (well, their company's). Lucky because the prices were, to put it mildly... out of this world. Here is a semi-comprehensive review in 5 minutes or less: Ambiance: Pretty spacious! With lots of tables and a long bar and a waiting room and a small fountain out front, and well-lit. The ceiling was 20 to 25 feet tall. Chef Tojo was there with the crew as well. There were semi-private booths. Parking was okay with metered parking on Broadway. Food: Fresh sashimi, but not enough choices I expected from this restaurant. Had wild pacific salmon, red snapper, and sweet prawns, and toro. Cooked dishes were prawn tempura, beef tataki, Japan wagyu beef, hamachi kama, some rolls, and green tea creme brulee. The prawn tempura was not good (bland and little taste). Beef tataki was very good. Japan wagyu beef was very good and the sauce made it even better. Hamachi Kama was okay. The rolls were good. The creme was good. Value: It was overpriced, and The same dishes can be ordered for half the price (for example, Sushi Hachi in Richmond) and for very similar quality. The only dish that stood out was the Japan wagyu beef and the beef tataki which was very good. Service: Very prompt and good service. Just a minor mistake where they forgot 1 dish we ordered. Conclusion: Not worth the price. Food is good but overpriced. Location and the ambiance was good. Service was good. Rating: 6/10. |

Darn. Next time then. |
Red Wagon.. I see this as the new Sophie's I remember first going to Sophie's in the early 90s.. the ambiance on W4th back then was about the same. Food wise, it is breakfast food, but the pulled pork pancakes is quite good. |
kirin (starlight) food 5/10 service 3/10 prob the worst kirin experience for me yet, and ive had a few bad ones! not sure what was going on with the food but out of 8 dishes maybe 3 were good. |

Really funny and knowledgable. Clarified my undertanding between Shinko/Kohada and also dispelling the fact that Kampachi was not necessarily young Yellowtail. Restaurant is reservations only so me and my friend were the only people there from 7-8:30. Anthony Bourdain was just there a few days prior filming for Parts Unknown. Yasuda-san said a few times that "It's the Asian women that especially love Tony Bourdain". Also said that they are good friends because they are both similar. Started in New York, love for food, etc. Yasuda-san's peices are pretty similar in size to his former New York restaurant, Sushi Yasuda, style (small neta:shari proportions) and his style is definately not classic Edomae zushi. His usage of salt was different than I'm used to but definately worked for some peices; especially the Anago. I forgot to ask whether he partook in aging any of the peices. Probably do a full write up when I have time. Sidenote: The guy is yoked as fuark. 9/10 |
^ Very nice! Tokyo. And looking forward to the write-up. |
Is the website accurate that 12 piece set is about 3800 yen only? Didn't you also have a blog before? |

That is... around $40 CDN. For a top chef, that is definitely reasonable. |
Nice find Jer, thanks for making the reso's and we definitely have to make a return visit if we go to Tokyo again next year! Ika done the way it should be. Yasuda was a pretty funny guy too! |
Steveston Village Vietnamese Restaurant in.... Steveston Village. Yes, that's the name. Food: Great food. Great taste for all the dishes: Spring rolls Pho Vietnamese style Pad Thai Satay beef skewers (which tastes like Malaysian style Satay... which is GOOD) Some other dishes that I don't remember. Fried Banana w/ Ice Cream Service: Prompt service Courteous Food rolled out quickly Ambiance: Looks very modern with 12 to 15 tables. Value: For a large party of 7 people, it came out to $130 (tips excluded) and everybody was stuffed. Good deal for good food. Would try again. 10/10 Steveston Village Vietnamese Restaurant - Steveston - Richmond, BC |

Le pho on hastings. Saltiest pho I ve ever had. I had to add hot water and it was still bad. Never going back again. |
Hi Genki inside Nikkei Place. It is a restaurant inside a seniors home. It is run by the people who own Fujiya. I've heard good things about the place and have always wanted to go. I went for lunch, btw. In a nutshell, it is pretty close to home made Japanese food. I only tried the chicken karaage. One order of each, regular and spicy. Both were surprisingly good. Wife and her friend had other stuff and they reported it was pretty darn good. I would rate the karaage about 8/10. The best karaage I've had in my entire life is from some restaurant in Winnipeg of all places. Yujiro. Anyway, if you want pretty good Japanese food that is a bargain (big servings), give Hi Genki a try. BTW, best time to go is around 11:30 am on a weekday. Anything after that or on the weekends and it's way too busy. I'm going back to try their dinner menu one day. Oh, the service there is OK. It is afterall a cafeteria. |
