I've read the book Moneyball that is based around the MLB club Oakland Athletics and their GM Billy Beane. The main aspect of Moneyball is sabermetrics, a kind of non-traditional statistical analysis that places emphasis on statistics that had no relevance in the "old baseball" world. The idea to is to collect players who may not have the traditional tools a scout would look for (hitting for average, hitting for power, speed, defense, and throwing ability), but rate highly in the system of sabermetrics.

I really don't see how the Moneyball idea can be applied to hockey. Hockey statistics can vary wildly from season to season for individual players, and can be highly correlated to who a player's linemates are.

Anyone know if/when the 3rd jersey is available and where they could get their hands on it?

It's all about player development, scientifically analyzing player stats that aren't traditionally analyzed. For example in baseball, traditionally a players talent was analyzed with stolen bases, runs batted in, and batting average but with moneyball on base percentage and slugging percentage were used to analyze a players ability. Cheaper players were signed by the Oakland A's using this method.

yea, it kind of goes towards Gillis signing these "reclemation projects"

ie. Bernier, O'brien

people who other teams felt didnt have what it takes, then the Canucks push them to get back into a effective role

personally i think the O'brien trade was brilliant

goo3 11-16-2008 09:36 PM

^ Add wellwood, too.

Pyatt was a reclamation project LOL. Nonis had a bunch, but they were all defensively responsible.

trdees 11-16-2008 10:29 PM

dont make up excuses for pyatt, he just sucks. hes not defensive minded ok?

AzNightmare 11-16-2008 10:56 PM

So seriously, when are Canucks going to get rid of Pyatt? Waste of space.

Someone needs to tell that to AV, he uses Pylon on the PK as much as Burrows and Kesler :haha:

I'm scratching my head whenever I see Pylon out on the PK

AFAIK, for now you can only get it at the team store, and it will be released for sale by retailers in a couple weeks. I myself prefer the vintage jersey (I'm boycotting Canucks jerseys until they actually put some though and creativity into them). The Johnny Canuck V logo is a nice touch though.

goo3 11-17-2008 12:09 AM

^ I agree

Remember Wade Brookbank.. he was 3rd star tonight:

W. Brookbank 1G / 0A / +1 / 1SOG / 0 PIM / TOI 01:58.. holy shit

LoL...

So I was at the game on Saturday... pretty fun atmosphere with all the Leafs fans in attendance. In fact, I had to drive my girlfriend downtown at 2pm, so I was at GM Place really early... and there was literally a 10:1 ratio of Leafs to Canucks jerseys there. I don't know whether the Leafs fans like showing up early or what, but they were everywhere. They were a fairly boisterous bunch... they did manage to get a few "Go Leafs Go" chants going. Was any of that heard on TV? What about the "Leafs Suck" chants? Good thing it didn't take long to shut them up though, when the Canucks scoring two in the first, and another two in the second. I had a couple Leafs fans sitting right next to me, and the only thing they could cheer for was when they broke Luongo's shutout... but that's pretty sad for them if that's the only thing worth cheering about. :p

Hondaracer 11-17-2008 10:36 AM

^ I think I probably heard the go leafs go chant once or twice but it definately was never as loud as the go Canucks

LOL the best one was when everyone was chanting leafs suck in sync with that Mexican hat dance song haha that was super loud on tv

Gumby 11-17-2008 02:00 PM

Yeah I heard LEAFS SUCK pretty clearly on TV... :lol

Alatar 11-17-2008 02:08 PM

Yeah, that LEAFS SUCK chant, I heard it going and couldn't help but laugh.

AzNightmare 11-17-2008 02:14 PM

Somehow after that Leafs game, I still feel quite empty.
I think Lu losing his shutout really did it for me.

Just feels like the win wasn't fully complete. :(

k3lv 11-17-2008 02:18 PM

^ Leafs suck chants were all over the bar I was at.

I agree. I don't need them to run up the score, but don't let up at the end and at least play keep-away with the Leafs and prevent them from scoring. Get your team the win, and get your captain his shutout. :)

suprasian 11-17-2008 03:14 PM
