I would agree that they're not in "complete disarray", but Edmonton has had young guns with "promising futures" for the past 3-4 years. Hasn't gotten them anywhere.

Secondly, Calgary:
Kiprusoff - has been absolutely terrible the past 2 years, ever since he signed the long term deal. Worth nowhere near the money he's making.
Iginla - still a good core piece, although he can no longer be considered one of the top 3, even top 5 forwards in the game.
Phaneuf - Has regressed since his 2nd year, if he continues he will have gone from potential future Norris winner to Jovo-type offensive d-man. Good but not great.
Jokinen - didn't help them much after the deadline, and now they're stuck with him at 5.5mil

Calgary needs to completely revamp their core IMO....they haven't made it out of the first round in the past 5 years despite having more than enough talent on paper....something is not there

Yeah but those are the exact players that you just don't dismiss. Despite having Crosby & Malkin on the same team, Pens were on a downward spiral. Adjustments were made and look where they are now.

Before their collapse, CGY led the NW Division by a margin of 13 points. At that same time, Canucks barely won a game for 2 months and we just barely edged CGY for the title in the end.

Also, IIRC, despite Canucks being the Superior team, there have been a handful of games that the EDM just made our D and our Goalie look bad. With one Sam Gagne undressing both Willie Mitchell & Luongo; veterans at least 5 years his senior in the NHL.

We're far from being the shit, and the other teams aren't quite shit. So there's really no justification to call out other teams.

Hondaracer 06-10-2009 09:20 PM

yet gagne only had what? 13 goals?

he isnt a difference maker when it comes to crunch time.

Canucks sign Sergei Shirokov

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1...ergei-shirokov

I am told the deal is done. The contract is a 2 year deal (entry level deal) and a 2 way contract, meaning he can be called up to the Canucks or sent to there farm team (Manitoba Moose) without going through waivers. He will be paid $875,000 with bonuses each year.

Note : Under CBA rules, players at the age of 22-23 can only sign 2 year entry level contracts. Shirokov is 23.

*Update* I have been told that a official announcment has not been made yet because there is a problem over in Russia to send him over. But don't get me wrong, this deal is 100% done. I will try and find out more about the situation, stay tuned...

Not 100% confirmed but I sure hope this is true!

Who is Sergei Shirokov? What's his play like? Explosive goal scorer? Please be a diamond in the rough!!

Small and undersized at 5’10, 176 lbs, Shirokov is not a fast skater, but is described by the Canucks scouting staff as being a very strong skater. He does not possess dynamic offensive skills, but has the vision and finishing ability to potentially develop into a supporting scorer at the NHL level, and could prove to be a very valuable player for the Canucks if he can round out his defensive game.

When you mean collapse, did you mean acquiring Jokinen lol!

I don't think anyone is saying Canucks are the best, but in no terms are Calgary or Edm in a better position than Vancouver that is for sure,

Shirokov has been improving every year since he was drafted, he lead his team in scoring this season in the KHL.

The Dallas Stars have hired Marc Crawford to be their next head coach. The move comes one day after the team announced the dismissal of Dave Tippett.

According to the team's website, Crawford will be introduced at a news conference on Thursday in Dallas.

This will be Crawford's fourth assignment behind an NHL bench. He began his career with the Quebec Nordiques-Colorado Avalanche franchise, and also coached the Vancouver Canucks and Los Angeles Kings.

He won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year in 1995, and also won the Stanley Cup with the Avalanche in 1996.

Crawford, 48, is a native of Belleville, Ontario. He spent the past season as a broadcaster after being fired by the Kings after the 2007-08 campaign.

He has coached in 987 NHL games, with a record of 470-361-156.

Sergei Shirokov
Prospect Grade: 7.0 D (About Prospect Grades)

Profile Contributed By: HF Staff
History

Shirokov is familiar to many avid world junior watchers because of his appearances in the past two tournaments where he impressed many with his shiftiness and stickhandling. He played eight games with CSKA Moscow in 2004-05, not registering any points or penalty minutes.

2005-06: He spent the past season with CSKA and posted good enough numbers with seven goals and six assists in 39 regular season games. Shirokov’s draft value went up after the World Juniors. He got off to a good start but slowed down in playoffs. Shirokov’s skating skills and passing ability helped him develop an effective duo with speedy forward Nikolai Lemtyugov (STL).

2006-07: The diminutive Russian had a breakout season with 16 goals and 18 assists in 52 games with CSKA.

2007-08: For the second straight season, Shirokov scored 34 points with CSKA. It proved that last season was no fluke, but the same questions remain about his future.
Talent Analysis

Small and undersized at 5’10, 176 lbs, Shirokov is not a fast skater, but is described by the Canucks scouting staff as being a very strong skater. He does not possess dynamic offensive skills, but has the vision and finishing ability to potentially develop into a supporting scorer at the NHL level, and could prove to be a very valuable player for the Canucks if he can round out his defensive game.
Future

Shirokov reportedly told the Canucks’ Russian scout that he may be interested in learning the North American game in Manitoba prior to the 2006 Entry Draft. However, all are hoping they don’t have another Kirill Koltsov-like situation on their hands as Shirokov is showing signs of being an NHL-level talent. To date, there has been no clear indication of Shirokov crossing the Atlantic.

The next Datsyuk? thats a long shot but we can all hope

Not really racist! 06-11-2009 05:33 PM

Thank god Crawford is gonna be coaching. I can't stand listening to his HORRIBLE commentating.

Ronin 06-11-2009 06:30 PM

Good for Crow. He's always been a good coach.

I don't know about you but I always thought Crow wasn't a bad commentator...a bit awkward but not terrible overall.

Harvey Specter 06-11-2009 06:34 PM

It was only a matter of time before a team hired him.

winson604 06-11-2009 06:39 PM

Shaw will be airing Moose Game 7 (if we get there which we will)

The news on the website mentions that game 6 and 7 will be aired but that's for Winnipeg only. In Vancouver there is a Caps game on Friday so Shaw can only do game 7.

I always thought Crow was a good coach and a decent guy (aside from his mancrush on Cloutier)

I also thought Crow wasn't a bad commentator. I enjoyed listening to him call games because he can give a coach's perspective on certain plays/situations. He even mentioned that today on the Team 1040 about how it was nice to land the commentator role because it gave him the opportunity to see the game from a different perspective.

carisear 06-11-2009 08:41 PM

^^ agree 100% ch28.

Armind 06-11-2009 09:23 PM

AzNightmare 06-12-2009 03:45 AM

I hope Game 7 goes into OT. It would be insane!

Ludepower 06-12-2009 08:37 AM

Hope it's a tight game tonight w/ triple OT....head says Detroit...heart says Pitts

TVD 06-12-2009 10:18 AM

I'm pumped up for tonight's game. I hope everybody brings their A game and they give us a show. I hope Detroit takes it even though I should be rooting for Sid and the penguins. May the best team win
